The Fireflies (6) : In the warm summer nights, little glowing lights begin to bob and dart through the city. Fireflies are mating, so this isn't uncommon in itself; in the past few days you've probably seen hundreds of fireflies. What makes these lights so unique is that they seem to change color; you might see a blue one, a green one, a red one. They flicker randomly, and something just seems off with them. If you come into contact with one, you will find yourself with a strange electric jolt. They cannot be caught, and will flicker away if you pursue too aggressively. This isn’t the first time they’ve appeared in Destiny City, but no one’s been able to tell where they came from or where they’re going. No matter how quickly you chase them, they always seem to disappear before you can find any answers.

“Thanks for coming with Leah, I appreciate it.” Abby turned towards her friend and pointed towards the park they were heading for. “That's one of the spots that the rumor mill that is Reddit said were ‘strange colored lights’. If we are lucky I can get some shots for my blog. All these insane things going on right now are really upping my view traffic.” People in this city, and many others, seemed to really get a kick out of her ‘stories’. Many figure the pictures or ‘quotes’ are made up and it is all fake but there were those that truly took the various tall tales told on the web as solid truth. She did her best to only present the truth, if a bit skewed to not implicate anyone in order to stay under the radar. Abby also made sure her blog, at least the ‘woowoo’ blog of magic and mysteries, under a pen name, set behind as strong of protections she could, and in no way connected to her.
There was no way she was going to put anyone in danger if the negaverse decided to investigate the blog and its owner. Hell, she had even turned off monetization and there was no ad revenue. Nothing the blog generated came to her. There were no taxes, no income, no connection at all as far as she could find. At least not for that blog, her cooking one was another story. It was nowhere near as popular but she didn’t do too badly. Enough for a decent dinner here and there.
“So, are you ready to ‘brave the darkness’,” The young woman joked, more than aware that both of them could handle damn near anything the ‘darkness’ could throw at them.

Leah looked to her friend and nodded, waving off her appreciation as it wasnt really needed. “Not a problem Abby, let's just hope its a rather uneventful night. Find the fireflies, take some pictures and then grab a drink … if you're up for it.” She came because her friend asked, but there was a bit of curiosity as far as the fireflies were concerned. Who didn't love fireflies.
Leah rolled her eyes at her best friend and shook her head. “Neither of us have been afraid of the dark since we were young children … we’ve met very real and much scarier things before we were teens.” Had she been terrified for a while after her first encounter with a youma, after becoming a senshi, after the terrifying space adventures she had in space … yes, but now it was just apart of what they did.
“Where do we start?”

“First round is on me,” Abby laughed and headed over to the park. She already had her phone out ready to snap pictures the minute she saw anything strange. “True but got to admit zombies are now on my list. Even knowing it was a chaos creature it still sent shivers down my spine.”
She had not been happy about that little call for assistance. It didn’t help that her only skill was pretty much hand to hand combat. It required being up close and personal with the giant zombie dog. A big no in her book!
“Are you doing classes this summer or just going to practice?” Abby looked over at her friend as they made their way through the park. “Dad suggested I try to pick up another style since my one class doesn’t run more then once a week.”

Leah raised an eyebrow and shook her head, “zombies really Abbs … no thank you. I'm so glad that I missed out on that one.” She started laughing and moved toward the grass, trying to see if she could flush out the fireflies. She spun around walking backward with a grin …, “no classes. Not just kickboxing and gymnastics … man I wish I could have tried out for the olympics, but while my middle name may be Simone … I’m no Biles.”
“I'm thinking of picking up Jujitsu like Ryan, but,” she dropped her voice, “but I think with my magic it might not be necessary.”
“Cheerleading practice won’t pick back up again until camp, and then after it will be almost time for school and everything is back in full swing.”
She gave a grin to her friend, “guess what Abbs?”

“Yeah, I wish I could have too.” Abby shrugged and snapped a picture of her friend while she made a face at her. “I’ve heard that being in the Olympics takes serious time and money. Besides, I think it's more amusing to do it for fun than for a job.” That was one of the reasons Abby never took her dance ‘seriously’. She wasn’t looking to profit off of it. She just wanted to enjoy it. The other classes, the self defense classes, were for her safety. “Nice! Jujitsu would work well with your skill set. But yeah school will be starting sooner than we expect so maybe adding a completely new one isn’t exactly the best idea.” Shame really since Abby had absently noted a few classes that were offered in the city. She didn’t have to even wonder why there were so many styles and types offered. Destiny City really did require it.
She started to really take pictures as the little bugs started to really flash and fly. “What? And don’t say ‘chicken butt’.” Abby scolded her friend, not really expecting the other young woman to use that contrite phrase. “Oh, look!” A finger quickly pointed out the little blue and red lights flashing among the normal yellows. “Are they the fireflies or something else?”

Leah rolled her eyes, but gave a sly smile and started, “I might have met …”
The sentence was cut off as she turned as the fireflies seemed ready to dance in the air when they reached a grassy spot where she could only assume they had been resting. She grinned and reached up, watching the bugs dance around her and smiling at her friend. “Yeah I think so Abbs. Come on, get some pics before they disappear. I heard they dont stay around for long.”
She wished she could catch one, hoped one would land in her hand, but a couple came close to her outstretched hand and she got shocked like static electricity and pulled her hand back quickly. “Ow.”
She looked to Abby and frowned, “don’t let them get too close. I think it just shocked me.”

She didn’t have to wait for Leah to tell her to get the pictures. She was not only recording at this point but hitting the snapshot button just as fast. There had to be at least a few usable frames in there somewhere. Although the darkness would make it harder to see clearly. But not impossible, she just had to make sure the little golden star charm she attached as a phone charm stayed out of the camera’s view. Got to love modern phones! “Now that is rude…. You will absolutely finish that sentence when we get drinks!” Abby suspected what her friend was going to say but still, leaving her on a cliffhanger was just wrong.
Not that any of that mattered the moment Leah stated she had gotten hurt. Abby let her camera hand fall even as she took a few steps forward. “Are you ok?” She was much more concerned for her friend than her blog. If this little excursion was dangerous it was more then time to scatter… or fight. But how would they fight bugs? Could they even be fought?

Leah nodded when Abby asked if she was okay and shook her hand. “It was just a little shock, little more than static electricity, maybe a defense mechanism to keep things from harming it … I can't imagine birds would try to eat it, if they get shocked trying.”
She rubbed her hand on her shorts briefly before looking to her friend, “awwww I got to hold it in all the way to Hindsight …”
She giggled and linked arms with her friend, all smiled and turned to head in the direction of the karaoke lounge she liked to frequent. “Very well, tell me about your week then…”

Abby narrowed her eyes at her friend before letting it go, if she was really hurt Leah would have said something. “No, you could spill on the way but gossip is always great over drinks.” She gently shoulder bumped her friend as they made their way out of the park. “Oh, nothing all that spectacular but I did-” Their conversation faded into the darkness as the duo headed out leaving the colorful, if a bit sparky, lightning bugs behind to blink peacefully in the night.
