Quote: Under Construction (11) : Construction in Destiny City is a constant; it is never surprising to see buildings come and go. However, almost overnight it seems as though a large project has suddenly come to life. Where there was once an abandoned strip mall and a sad, trash laden park, the ground has now been completely bulldozed. There’s no information about this project available in any media outlets or online, and all attempts to research it result in dead ends. A large fence has been put up, but twelve feet of wire isn’t enough to keep out anyone curious enough to investigate. Cameras are set up all over the place and there is a strange, almost magical energy. The space is large enough to be a theme park. Strangely, frosted glass stars in an array of colors can be found randomly across the lot. Someone obviously has big plans for this space–already, some strange, fantastical buildings are going up. The space feels strangely large, and once you have jumped the fence it feels like Destiny City is a world away. The sky seems brighter and the city lights seem far away, almost as though there is some strange barrier separating the construction zone and the rest of the city. And, oddly enough, if you are standing outside the fence and looking into the construction zone, everything appears blurry and it's hard to make out the details. It’s strange, for sure–but nothing seems wrong about it. Yet. “What do you think it’s going to be?” Belmont asked as he leaned against the chain link fence and peered into the construction area. He and Targoviste had stopped for dinner and were patrolling through town–though, it really just felt like they were sightseeing.
There hadn’t been any trouble nor had he even picked up the trace of a Chaos signature. By all means, it was a fairly easy going, pleasant night.
Warm, with a nice breeze. He was on his second corn dog now that he’d finished his basket of fries.
Even though he might have enjoyed the standard rush of adrenaline that came with a fight, he was actually pretty complacent that he got to enjoy his dinner with Targoviste.
It had been his idea to head over to the construction sight, which he’d already pointed out earlier that he thought it was interesting that he never saw anyone work but every time he passed by here there was more done. He’d looked it up–something this big, what could they be building?
…And, he’d found nothing. At first he thought it might have been some warehouse or storage unit, or another strip mall, but the more construction they did, the less confident he was in these assumptions.
So, he’d brought her out to scratch her brain.
A green star charm dangled from his belt; he’d found it on the way over here.
“And it looks weird, right? Don’t tell me it’s just heat, either.”

Targovishte didn’t…have an answer for Belmont. Though she wanted to. She desperately wanted to. The more she stared at the…whatever was being built. The less it made sense. And the longer she stared, the less everything seemed to make sense.
With a sigh she put down her container of fries and then held what was left, including one last chicken strip to Belmont. “I…I wish I had an answer. It’s like. A carnival that…belongs in some super tourist town? A theme park? But why…out of everywhere in the world...would anyone want to build something like that here. That’s like. Asking for trouble.”
…Or some pretty kickass fights on the tracks of a roller coaster…that…
Had potential.
Someone could leap to the top of a ferris wheel and see the sights…in fact.
“...I amend that comment, it would be fun trouble, but…still. Trouble.”

Belmont tilted his head just slightly and took another bite before he tore his gaze from the blurry construction sight and to the Squire at his side. Naturally, he accepted the last chicken strip.
“You think so?”
He couldn’t make out anything but colorful buildings. If there weren’t so many cameras, he’d even thought about trying to jump the fence, but–
Well, speaking of trouble, he thought he could avoid a little at least.
“I guess I don’t mind what it is as long as it’s not some Negaverse training ground or something. I wonder what the insurance policies are like for building any new…anythings.” Destruction was somewhat rampant, and though it seemed like everyone made a good effort to avoid extreme damage–at least, in very public parts of town–it meant that everything sort of felt risky.
To be fair, Destiny City was always growing, and it was a popular tourist spot.
“Looks better than the last place that was here, though. I’m glad someone’s finally doing something to clean up the area a bit. I just hate not knowing what it is. I couldn’t find any information online.”

“Maybe it’ll be some kind of surprise and delight–oh. Speaking of! Tell me about your friend, Connie? She is Hella pretty. How did you end up with someone so cute...is she single?”
Targovishte took another moment to stare at the construction sight, and then looked to Belmont, giving a small wink. “You know I can’t help myself around pretty cute girls. Doesn’t like bugs though, but who can blame her. That was horrifying.”
She gave a little sigh and her eyes drifted up towards the sky. “...I’ll admit. Space was...kind of neat. When I wasn’t thinking I was going to float away and like…” Targovishte wrinkled her nose. “Would you…compact? How do you die in space? It’s like pressure right? Like being under the ocean? The whole sub ordeal? Or do you expand and explode? Would I have combusted or imploded?”
If anyone would know the answer, it would obviously be Belmont.

“Wow,” Belmont said, raising a brow at her. “You go from thinking about pretty girls to exploding that quickly?”
He laughed. Unpressed to answer quickly, he took a bite of the chicken tender and enjoyed the flavor before he answered, “I guess if you were a normal person you might boil alive. Or your lungs might burst. I mean, you’d probably be unconscious first? But I think as long as you stayed powered up, you’d be fine. Like how we can walk around Jupiter just fine. If we wanted to.”
Not that he’d really put much effort into that; the storms were too powerful and too unpredictable. Even in the safety of his Wonder it was still a lot to deal with sometimes.
“What do you want to know about Connie? She’s great. I don’t know if she’s single. Or who she’s interested in. I don’t think we’ve talked that much about it, but I can ask when I see her again? We bump into each other pretty often.”

“Look, I can’t tell you the jumps my brain wants to make. It’s absolutely and completely out of my control. And the two are connected. Connie was with us when we were in danger of exploding.” Targovishte listened to his other words and shook her head. “Oh my god. Or boiled. That’s not horrifying at all.”
It was…a strange thought. How being powered up…even though it was nothing more than a different set of clothes, really…would keep them safe. It…
It sounded fake, the more she thought about it, and Targovishte finally just shrugged it all off before it could start to upset or worry her.
“Oh, I just like pretty girls, Belmont, that’s all.” Targovishte laughed, glad that they were off the subject of being boiled alive and bursted…
“We can…walk around Jupiter without being powered up though…” Great. Back on the subject. “I wanted to leave this behind but…it’s the truth. We don’t explode if we’re Sadie and Aiden…lord knows we’ve had to power down and back up when we get wet or dirty or whatever?”

“Well, I hope you find a pretty girl who likes you as much as you like her,” Belmont said, obviously amused at her enthusiasm. He wondered if she actually wanted to talk about Jupiter or the semantics of being powered up or not, or if she just wanted to seem a little less girl-crazy.
He was already onto her, though.
“I can’t say I understand things specifically but I can’t help but wonder if it’s something tied to our starseeds. I don’t know. To be honest, I’ve never really tried to go very far on Jupiter anyway–and especially not while unpowered. I like a little danger, don’t get me wrong! But being reckless on Jupiter just seems like a bad accident waiting to happen. If something goes wrong, it’s not like they’ve got paramedics out here. And if there’s a bad storm?”
He clicked his tongue against the roof of his mouth. “I dunno. Don’t know much about how we function in space, either. It’s not like there are science books on how we’re the anomaly for being able to function in space when astronauts have to jump through so many hoops. How'd we get to this topic, I thought we were trying to figure out what this weird place is?"
There was a hole in the chain link fence, and some gravel. He kicked a few small rocks but they didn't go very far. Or, rather, he couldn't exactly see how far they went. It was almost like they disappeared from sight a few feet away. He hadn't been playing close attention, though.

“Oh hush! I’m sure that I will one day.” Lord she had wished he would have let her change the subject but, it was fine. It was Belmont and he was like a brother. An annoying younger brother who enjoyed teasing and…that was fine. She could handle it. Mostly.
“That’s true…but it doesn’t kill us right away...and that’s pretty…I mean. That’s solid. Have you taken anyone who wasn’t powered up to your Wonder? I haven’t, I’ve hardly gone to mine but…I feel bad but I kind of want to try it now…to like, see if someone who isn’t involved in all of this handles themselves…”
As she spoke the words she winced. “Wow that sounds. Really bad, forget I said that, and yeah…the place is weird but…if it turns into something fun…we should make a plan to go together! Theme park day! Fried foods and lemonade!”

Belmont snorted. “If it turns into something fun, sure. We’ll have to check it out.”
He shifted his weight and looked once more into the foggy construction sight. Even squinting brought him no clarity.
“I’ve never taken anyone who wasn’t powered up to my Wonder. I’ll have to ask around and see if anyone else has. Really wouldn’t want to put someone I care about in danger just to test a theory. Don’t get any ideas, you hear me? I don’t want to hear that you were kidnapping strangers or something just to see how they’d fare up on Jupiter without any magic,” he teased.

“Belmont!” Targovishte looked at him and put on an expression of pure suffering. Horror, even. “How could you even think I would do something like that…honestly the idea hadn’t crossed my mind, but it’s in there now so anything that happens is absolutely on you, buddy.”
She gave a shrug, trying to keep her face looking as neutral as possible, but finally just snorted. “Yeah. Like I ever go to my Wonder anyway…but…yeah. I’ll see. I won’t take anyone up there without absolute informed consent so, no worries on that. You ready to head out?”

Belmont scoffed but he was clearly finding amusement in this. If Targoviste started to get into too much trouble, he was sure he’d be the first to know. He’d just have to visit her Wonder when he went up to make sure she wasn’t finding some way to get into trouble.
“Yeah, we should probably head out and do some actual patrolling before we call it a night. But I’m serious, keep an eye on this place! I want to know what it’s going to turn into.”
He turned away from it and waited for her to catch up.
The night was still young. They could probably find plenty to do before turning in.
