School/Occupation: DCU, as a 2nd-year divinity Ph.D. student. She has her MA in theology and a BA in humanities. She lives off of stipends, grants, being a TA, and a side hustle as a freelance copyeditor.
Hobbies:
Wildlife Photography — Frances loves to go hunting… for the perfect shot. Through saving up and gifts over the years, she’s amassed a considerable amount of lenses and shelters and sights. With her trusty DSLR, she will go out at the crack of dawn to get a shot of deer grazing, at midnight to shoot owls hunting, and the middle of the day to film songbirds.
She submits her photography to magazines and competitions and has won a reasonable number of awards for it. She will also occasionally answer calls for backup camera-people at events, but vastly prefers the woods. Her apartment is decorated with framed and mounted prints of her work. Her current favourite is a shot of a bear with cubs that she took out in Colorado and had blown up to life-size. It dominates her living room, but that’s okay.
Knitting — inspired by her older half-brother’s love of macrame, Frances also got into the fiber arts. She maintains that she is very much still an amateur and doesn’t sell what she makes. She does, however, donate anything she thinks is good enough quality to be given to other people. Frances has been working on an enormous afghan for years, maintaining it’s a gift for the person she marries, whoever that is.
Languages — this was also inspired by her older half-brother. When he would say things in Hebrew or Latin, she was filled with envy… and with drive. Frances is strong with Spanish and French because Elliot wasn’t as much, and she wanted to compete with him. It just so happened she enjoyed learning the languages for their own sake, too. She’s working on Italian currently and hasn’t made up her mind between Portuguese or German for when that’s done.
Virtues:
Driven — Frances is ambitious and stalwart in her pursuits for knowledge, for success, for whatever she sets her sights on. Setbacks hurt, but she’s old enough and experienced enough to reframe them as learning experiences. If a goal turns out to just be straight-up impossible, she will take the time to either find an alternate goal that gets as close as she can or one that hopefully at least makes use of the resources she’s invested.
Generous — Frances donates to toy drives around the holidays and sends some of her better blankets to homeless shelters and the ASPCA. She will absolutely give a panhandler some spare cash if she has it, plus an offer to get them something to eat. She gets teased for being an easy mark, but she maintains that she wouldn’t have it any other way. She would rather be a sucker than be the reason someone goes without. As a TA at DCU, she is as easy a grader as the professors let her be, believing the knowledge is most important.
Gentle — part of why she got into wildlife photography was a disdain for the sport hunting that her father and his friends would go on for hours about. She did a stint as a student peer counselor in undergrad, finding fulfillment in being a shoulder people could lean on for that half-hour or so. She can be provoked past her limit as anyone else can, but overall, she tries to give grace to people who might just be having a bad day. When her limit is exceeded, she will firmly but gently assert her boundaries, not generally given to shouting or shoving back.
Flaws:
Sarcastic — it can be hard to believe, but Frances is sometimes bitingly sarcastic about things she observes around her. It can be off-putting to other people, especially if it seems to come out of nowhere. Sometimes this is on purpose, as gentleness and generosity don’t solve all her problems with other people, but it’s just as likely not to be intentional. “She’s joking!” is something often heard from her friends and colleagues. If she hurts someone’s feelings, she’ll duly apologize, but it’s a bad habit of hers. Sometimes, it’s better to pay attention to what she does more than what she says.
Untidy — Frances is always clean. She is not always neat. It’s not unheard of for her to arrive to class as either a student or a TA in rumpled khakis and a wrinkled button-down. She seems to have a system for keeping track of her belongings and always knows which pile of papers on her desk has the one she needs. Miraculously, she has yet to lose an assignment before it’s due, but that doesn’t mean she hasn’t lost sleep hunting around for where she knew she just had it. She can seem unprofessional to others, and it’s at times impacted her relationships with the professors in her department. The professor she studies under is thankfully very patient.
Vain — given her oft-scrungly appearance at DCU, her vanity takes people by surprise. However much Frances doesn’t mind getting dirty to get the best shot, she will not be seen in public afterward until she has time to clean up (even if that means she’s awkwardly sponge bathing in a freezing stream on her way back to town). Her clothing is rumpled, but it’s not torn, nor is it dirty, and it’s always something higher-end than what you’d find at a mall or department store. When she wears makeup, it’s got to be perfect, and she will waste time redoing it until she feels it is. Her hair is always kempt, even out in the woods. Sometimes her vanity gets the best of her generosity and gentleness, and she will awkwardly turn people down if they approach too closely with what she perceives as a lack in hygiene. It can also sometimes be difficult for her to separate her standards from someone else’s. (She’s working on it! She swears!)
