Quote:
The Meteor Shower (3) : It wouldn’t be a star festival without a meteor shower! Right on time, a beautiful array of shooting stars graces the night sky. This time of year is unnaturally clear and it’s incredibly easy to see the stars. Most meteor fragments appear to be little white or yellow lights streaming across the sky, but if you watch closely enough you may find that some of them seem to be a whole rainbow of colors. The scientists have reported that it’s just different components burning up as they enter the atmosphere, but there’s something undeniably magical about it.

Linnea had been cooped up in her room for so long that Malcolm wondered if she was sick or if she was ignoring him. Either were totally possible, though he never suspected she had poor intentions from either.

Sometimes she just had a lot of things going on and needed time for herself.

Except, Malcolm always worried that time for herself was time she was spending punishing herself with loneliness and solitude.

He’d been busy trying to finish a few chapters while he had a spurt of energy. He wanted to ride out the inspiration and drive for as long as he could so it had taken him a while to really notice how long it had been since he’d seen her but when he got up to stretch and get some snacks he decided that was a good time to check in on her, too.

He was briefly distracted by trying to peer out of the window and see any strings of light from the meteor shower–and to his surprise, even with all the lights around them, he could make out a few streaks in just the time it took him to make a sandwich and collect some snacks to bring up to her.

When he made his way there, her door was closed. He knocked lightly and kept his voice soft, just in case she was actually sleeping. He doubted it, but he was trying to be considerate, anyway.

Her door was closed so he knocked lightly on it. “Linnea? You haven’t eaten yet, right? I made some food, can I come in?”

Linnea sat on her mattress cross-legged, sort of half-watching out the window at the colors in the sky. There was a blanket slung over her shoulders, even though it was June now and even someone from Daphne couldn't really make the argument that it was cold. Her tail poked out from under the blanket and switched every few seconds.

She heard Malcolm's footsteps coming up behind her and she hunched her shoulders down even farther, just for a single self-indulgent second, before she did what she knew was right and polite and got up, taking the blanket with her, to crack open the door and wave him inside.

She didn't know what to say, though, and so she was quiet for a long second. She didn't feel like explaining that the tears on her cheeks were because the colors of the meteor shower had made her think of the solar lights that would be strung across the streets back home, and that such a simple thing on top of everything else had set her off.

She really didn't know how to say that Chaos had shown her her father, again, but the others hadn't let her walk into oblivion, so now she was here, hiding under her covers when she wasn't at work.

"I'm not really hungry," she told him, "But you can come in."

She returned to her mattress and patted a space next to her. She did appreciate the way that Malcolm was always kind to her, and she even appreciated it a bit that here was here even now.

Malcolm entered when invited, but he never really took up much space. The first thing he noticed was the tears, and he felt a weight on his chest when he spotted them. Linnea had already returned to the mattress, but he sat next to her when invited.

Of course he wanted to ask what was going on. She seemed lost, like she was there but far away, too. He sat down with the plate in his lap, hoping that if she could see it then she might be enticed. He had an array of snacks, from a bag of crackers, to chips, to gummies, to cookies. He could leave them here even if she wasn’t hungry, they wouldn’t go bad. And they’d be there whenever she was ready.

“I’ve missed seeing you,” he started, chewing on his cheek as he contemplated how long he should wait before asking if she was okay.

“And I was worried about you,” he admitted. “Have you eaten anything in a while? It’s okay if you’re not hungry. I made this for you just in case but I can just put it in the fridge for whenever you’re ready. How are you doing today?”

"I don't want to worry you," she said, softly, looking at the way he laid out the snack bags so that she knew just what kind of treats he had brought for her. It was sweet, the way that he was checking in on her.

She had the passing thought that it was something that Lars or some of her brothers might have done, but she bit her tongue when she found herself thinking that, hard enough that she could shove the thought back where it had come. She didn't reach for any of the food. She knew she should, to be polite if nothing else, but it had never quite stopped feeling like her stomach was full of rocks.

It was easier to eat at work, where she had to put on a brave face anyway, and where Cecil was trying to get her to try some new recipe. Here it was easier to fade away, to not think about things like that.

She didn't want to worry Malcolm, but she wouldn't have wanted to lie to him even if she could have. He was always nice to her, even if she was in an off mood.

"But I know I'm probably worrying you anyway. I'm having a hard time again," she admitted. "If you want to know, I can tell you about what happened."

Malcolm nodded understandingly. “Only if you want to talk about it. It’s okay if you don’t. But I’m happy to listen. I don’t want you to have to keep things locked away inside.”

Fears and doubts and insecurities and grief–they were a poison he knew. He had an outlet, even if only just through writing. He didn’t know if Linnea had the same chance for relief, and if he could offer an ear to help, it was hers.

He kept the food ready and available but he didn’t push it on her as he turned to face her.

Of course he was worried. It wasn’t like his usual worries, where he found problems in his own life to fixate on, where he let his imagination run wild with the worst case scenarios. This was a practical worry. He cared about her, and if she wasn’t doing well he was going to do whatever he could to try and help.

Linnea nodded. Slowly, she reached over to pick up a small bag of chips, which she gently clutched for emotional support, but she did not open it. Not yet.

"There was another one of us with a Chaos infestation," she told him. "Daedalus. I went to help. I didn't see you or the others there, which is okay. If you stayed home, that might have been better. It was messy." Although, even if they had been there, maybe she wouldn't have seen them.

She'd been distracted. Her free hand curled tight around the blankets.

"Um. Illusions. I saw my father again. I understood that it was fake this time, but I also understood that I wouldn't really see him again if I was," she pressed her lips together, "Still alive?"

There it was, and she stared at the wall for a moment in the heaviness of it.

"I tried to throw myself into the Chaos. Someone had to pull me away from it, kicking and screaming."

She swallowed, and tried to move on. "And then I look at other people like myself. They're other people who shouldn't be alive. They're other people with nothing but grief. They have dead worlds, and cultures, and families. But they're not like me, either."

She looked straight at Malcolm, and her voice finally broke. "They're happy. They're strong. They've built lives for themselves here. Me?" It turned out that she still had tears left, and a fresh batch rolled down her face. "It's been years and I still can't fit in here."

Malcolm watched Linnea with quiet focus and a soft gaze. His brows furrowed slightly as he listened, at first out of guilt. Then, out of worry.

The plate of food was on the ground, not out of reach but not within range of being kicked over. He moved closer to her. “Can I hug you?” he asked, but his arm was up and ready to wrap around her shoulders. He didn’t want to crowd her if she needed space, and Malcolm wasn’t the sort of person to be upset if she said she wasn’t in the mood for one.

He didn’t allow silence to spread throughout the room but neither did he chase it away forcefully. Malcolm was quiet but warmth radiated from him. He was worried about Linnea. He cared deeply for her. She’d been through so much, and she was trying so hard. She deserved more than what the universe had given her.

“I hope it isn’t selfish for me to say that I’m glad someone was there to pull you away from the Chaos. I wasn’t there, I’m sorry.” He wished he had been, at least for her. He didn’t know Daedalus, he hadn’t even heard about another Chaos Infestation. He should have been powering up more often but he'd been so swamped with deadlines the last few weeks that he hadn't really had much of a choice.

Once she had said her piece, she didn't fight the tears, and a few more rounds of half-sobs made her chest shake. When Malcolm asked if he could hug her, though, a little smile broke through all that. She nodded.

She scooted close to him on the bed, pressing up shoulder to shoulder before she put an arm around his back. She curled her tail around him, a habit that she didn't get to do on Earth nearly as much as she would have liked.

"I like hugs," she murmured.

Malcolm asking if she was selfish had her immediately shake her head. Was she still angry at Muri for pulling her back? She didn't know. That feeling that the Chaos had awakened in her, that certain degree of hopelessness, ebbed and flowed day by day.

Now, it felt farther away.

"You're one of the kindest people to me," she told him. "I don't regret being able to spend more time with you."

With Linnea closer to him, Malcolm wasted no time wrapping his arm around her and securing her in a warm embrace. He knew she liked hugs. He did, too. He tipped his head just slightly, his temple to her crown.

“I’m really glad to hear that, Linny. I don’t think I’ll ever regret being able to spend more time with you, either. You’re a good friend. And I always feel better when you’re around. Maybe we should go out more. Julienne’s been saying I need to get more sun. We could go out to the reservoir while the weather’s good, maybe? I don’t know, I won’t pressure you if you want to stay inside. Maybe you can tell me more about your home, and your family. As long as everyone is still alive in your heart and memory, they still exist. And I know…grieving is hard, Linnea. It’s a heavy burden to carry. And everyone handles it differently. But I don’t want you to feel alone. You’re not alone. And you don’t have to compare yourself to the other Senshi who came from other worlds.”

He rubbed her back gently, and talked gently. “It’s okay to be different. It’s okay to be sad. It’s okay to be struggling. You’re still strong. But this is hard on you. Please don’t compare yourself to them. I know you’ll make it through this. And by the end of it you’ll be happy, too. Is there anything I can do to help?”

"Maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to do something like that," Linnea agreed. On her own, she didn't always know if she could muster the motivation to leave her room, but if Malcolm wanted to do something like that, she wouldn't say no to him. She did like sitting out in the sunshine. He knew that. "I don't know much about swimming," she said. It wasn't like there had been much chance to learn, with the limited water on Daphne carefully protected, "But I could try."

She didn't think he'd mind if she wasn't good at it. She let herself sit with that happy fantasy for a moment, enjoying the warmth of the way he was leaning on her, before reality sat back in.

"I am alone, though," she said.

She managed, somehow, not to sob again, but she stared very hard at the wall with those red-rimmed eyes, her tail beginning to twitch against the mattress. "Maybe there's a way for people to find certain kinds of loved ones, after a loss like what we've been through. Partners? That's easy." At least, she assumed it was from the way she'd seen Fang kissing that girl after they'd fought that spirit on his world. "But I don't want that."

She'd never wanted that, no matter how much better and easier everyone had assured her it would make her life.

"But family, it's," she squeezed her eyes shut, her voice crackling again. "It doesn't work," she swallowed, and there were the sobs. "And if you ask people, if you can call them something like that, they just-"

She cut off, unable to speak farther. He asked if there was anything he could do to help, but she knew that there was still that gap between them, that he was acting like her brother but that didn't mean he ever would be.

Malcolm didn’t tell her it was okay because he didn’t want her to think he was just trying to say what she wanted to hear. There was no guarantee that tomorrow would be any easier today, no matter how hard you worked for it. He was optimistic, but he knew that when you were in the pits of despair, knowing what could be didn’t mean anything when it felt so out of reach.

“Family comes in a lot of shapes and sizes.” He rubbed at her back gently. “And it means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. I can’t speak for anyone but myself but I guess…you’ve been living with me so long, I sort of started to think of you like family. But it’s okay if it’s not the same for you! I won’t take offense. And it’s no pressure. You know, my brother and I never really had the best relationship. It’s gotten better.”

It was still complicated.

“But you’re different. It’s easy to talk to you. To find things we have in common, or to talk about the things about us that are different. I don’t know what ‘makes’ a family.” There were a lot of found families in this war. Talia was a good example of it.

“But I know that you’re welcome in mine. And my parents haven’t gotten back in town yet,” and he hadn’t exactly told them that he’d been letting someone live with him while they were traveling, “but I know they’d be happy to have you around. Although, um, they don’t really know about the whole powered thing.” They babied him a bit, even now. He didn’t want to expose them to more things to worry about. “But we could figure it out. I don’t know. I know you’re hurting right now, Linnea. I don’t want to minimize that. I can’t pretend like I know how hard this has been on you.”

He leaned against her and held her gently. “You don’t have to figure this out alone. You just need to find a foothold. Something to help you get settled so you can start making bigger steps.”
