The Wishing Tree (1): A Destiny City Star Festival Tradition to be held every year; In Town Square, there is a beautiful tree with spreading branches. It is tall, but the lowest branches are easily reached. The city has decorated the tree with small, starlike ornaments and glistening lights. Thick leaves and beautiful purple flowers dangle from the branches, along with a myriad of different colored papers with handwritten wishes. Next to the tree is a stack of blank paper with twine attached, and a handwritten sign that explains:

Write your wish on a sheet of paper and tie it to the tree. Take one wish off the tree and do your best to grant it. When you have granted the wish, bury the paper in the park.

The papers are biodegradable and filled with seeds. There are no rules for wishing, but you are encouraged to wish for something vague enough that it can be interpreted in many ways so that it can be granted; you do not write your name on it, but it is encouraged to write something that doesn’t wish for self gain, but rather something that can make the world a better place. Some wishes dangling from the tree already include things like “I wish there wasn’t so much litter in the park,” “I wish someone would clean the graffiti off the old historic buildings,” and “I wish there were more volunteers at the shelter.”

If you choose to use the Wishing Tree, what do you wish for? If your wish is private, you may write it on the paper and choose a spot in the park and bury it yourself instead of hanging it on the tree.

Shannon strolled the streets, watching as people drifted past. It was that time of year again, when the city filled with strangers that were here for the festival. A collection of poor saps who could be used and drained of money, and other things. Ah what a time to live in the city. There were some downsides of course. It meant that many restaurants were filled with strangers. The roads were more crowded, as was public transport, and the city had a tendency to be quite strange during things like this. She chalked it up to the magic those buttbows introduced to the area. Too much ‘mystical’ s**t just perverts the area and makes it susceptible to more strange s**t. She didn’t bother to wonder if maybe it was the chaos of the negaverse that was making this ‘interesting’ in the city. Overall Shannon didn’t care. Not like it mattered to her anyway.

She took advantage of the influx of people so by the time the night had well and truly set in she was pleasantly buzzed. There were quite a few men in the bars that were willing to buy her a drink, some of them were even cute. She needed to remember to go out hunting later before the festival goers left for parts unknown. As it was, Shannon wasn’t paying all that much attention, mostly playing on her phone, when she somehow made her way into the main square of the city. The one with the huge tree they decorated for the festival. It wasn’t until a chipper voice called out to her that she looked up and saw a younger woman waving her down.

“Here! Have a charm and don’t forget to write your wish down!” The younger woman passed her a gold star charm that tinkled as it was practically shoved at her. Shannon took it absently before raising a brow and looking over at the table with the little wish slips. It was all bull but… considering the s**t that happened in this city maybe it was worth it. With that in mind she drifted over to the table and ignored the table attendant as they happily explained about the paper and the wishes and the whole thing. Shannon just nodded and acted like she cared.

After assuring the table guard she understood, Shannon took her little slip of paper and quickly scrawled her wish on it before heading over to the tree. It wasn’t hard to tie it up, and even easier to rip one of the wish papers down. Apparently that's what she was meant to do. A glance at the paper had her chuckling, “Who wishes for thoughts and prayers?” She scoffed quietly as she wandered off, as if her own wish of getting a raise at her job was overly feasible for others to make happen.

Willing to be at least a somewhat ‘good’ sport over the whole thing she actually did take a moment to send ‘thoughts and prayers’ to the writer of the wish note before she dropped the piece of paper and used her shoe to cover it in dirt. “Wonder what they needed the good vibes for,” She absently wondered even as she walked off. It really was past time for her to get her a** in gear and hit her quota for the week and the packed city really was the best opportunity to do that.
