The Meteor Shower (3) : It wouldn’t be a star festival without a meteor shower! Right on time, a beautiful array of shooting stars graces the night sky. This time of year is unnaturally clear and it’s incredibly easy to see the stars. Most meteor fragments appear to be little white or yellow lights streaming across the sky, but if you watch closely enough you may find that some of them seem to be a whole rainbow of colors. The scientists have reported that it’s just different components burning up as they enter the atmosphere, but there’s something undeniably magical about it.

There were sometimes benefits to apartment living, Bryn thought as she arranged a camp chair on the small balcony. Not so great things as well, such as not having a roommate anymore, but as she’d reluctantly acclimated, she’d been forced to admit that this was a pretty nice setup overall. Only having to worry about her own things was nice. Not having to leave the room to play guitar because her roommate hated noise was even better. Glancing to the corner where her 8 stringed Beast resided, Bryn smiled. Yes. It was definitely good to be able to play whenever the mood struck.

And this balcony was fantastic. Sure, it was small, but she had room for a chair and her plants and she could sit outside in the morning and drink her tea. Yes, overall, things were very good.

And about to get better, if she was lucky. She’d been following the news and the weather tonight was supposed to be very clear and not too cold. Perfect for watching meteor showers. And she’d heard these ones were spectacular!

As she bustled about preparing, she spared an amused glance for the blue star charm that she’d found on the sidewalk when she’d walked to the grocery store this morning. She wasn’t sure who’d lost it and in a city this size there was really so way to tell. So she’d pocketed it, choosing to see it as the universe giving her a cute little surprise.

“Okay, got my snacks and drinks. Chair is set up, joggers are clean and ready to throw on… what else, what else? Oh! Blanket!”

Bryn desired coziness since she’d be sitting outside for a good chunk of the night. And nothing was cozier than joggers, a baggy sweatshirt and a little, cheap fleece throw blanket. Hers was liberally covered in rainbow unicorns. Once she’d set the blanket over the back of her chair, the sky had started to go dark. Taking a moment to admire the colors of the sunset, Bryn smiled again before running inside to change clothes and grab her drink from the fridge. Heading out onto the balcony, she got herself settled and since there was still a sliver of light in the sky, took a moment to pull her hair up into a ponytail.

As the sky finally turned a velvety dark blue, then black, she tipped her head back and waited expectantly. Nor was she disappointed when the first spray of meteors fell across in the sky in a blaze of white and yellow-ish sparkles. Laughing in delight, Bryn noticed that some of the meteors burned pink or blue or red and mentally declared herself delighted.

Lost in her own little world of magicalness, Bryn watched the shower far into the night. She’d never seen meteor showers like this before and she was grateful that she had the opportunity now. And though she wished that she could have taken pictures, she knew her little camera phones simply would not have been up to the task. No, she’d have to rely on her brain and memory and be content.
