Minnie hated this.

She hated that she was getting better at it. These days she could get almost a whole week's quota in a night if she did it right. She could drain in nightclubs. She could drain whoever ended up in alleyways.

Right now she was draining at a bus stop, her shoulders pressed up against the old man and the lady in a suit that she was squished between on the tiny, anti-homeless bench. Nobody would notice the way that the woman began to yawn. It was late. That was normal. Nobody would notice the way that man slumped over.

That was a lie. She would remember it later, at home, when she started doing the what ifs.

What if the lady had kids at home? What if she was too tired to make them dinner? Then they'd all go to bed hungry. What if the old man got found by one of those youma, or he fell off the weirdly small bench and hit his head on the concrete?

But she tucked the energy away anyway and started walking down the street, because what if she didn't turn in energy?

She didn't know, but she had a feeling it wouldn't be good.

Abzu typically looked for a few things on patrols.

He was less bold than he had been as a page, but they didn't stop him from approaching people. As long as the aura felt as if they were about equivalent or lesser, It didn't hurt to see if he can convince them to stop. In this case, the aura felt a little bit lesser.

Perhaps, in some ways, that would make this all easier.

It was his hope with the return of energy, or even worse, the starseed, the person he was speaking with might be convinced could stop entirely, or just reconsider the fact that withdrawing these things was not a good idea. Even a few seconds of reflection could make all a difference. It couldn't hurt.

And this woman, as she tucked a small ball away?

She looked a bit hesitant.

"Ma'am?" offered Abzu, cautiously, as he placed the reed to his lips. "There are other options."

The music slipped from his saxophone, along with the magic to urge her to give the energy back to its source.

Minnie did feel the aura. She was getting better at feeling stuff like that too, although she apparently wasn't good enough, because by the time she realized someone was getting close, he was right there, watching her freeze with her hand halfway in her pocket.

She did half quirk an eyebrow at him, especially at the saxophone. What was he going to do, start playing Careless Whispers at her?

"'Kay," she said, leaning against the wall. "I'm listening. What options?"

People loved to tell her that the Negaverse was awful, but nobody so far had had any ideas on how to extract herself from what was a weird mix of a mafia and a cult.

She crossed her arms in front of her. "Not giving the energy back, though."

"Chaos has a way of making people feel trapped, like they have to feed on people for a machine that doesn't deserve it," he murmured, the mouthpiece remaining near his lips. "You don't have to feed this mysterious force. You can leave. There are ways out, and we have a support system."

It was an easy enough pitch. He knew it was hard on the other side. He had seen people purify.

He knew a couple of them personally, at this point. But time and time again, he thought it was worth it. He wasn't sure if she was at that stage yet, but he might as well start with the basic pitch. He could go from there.

And if she was going to say that she wasn't going to return it, maybe he could work on that.

Didn't hurt.

He pressed the mouthpiece inside his lips, and that attempt would come from the music of the horn.

When Abzu channels his magic by playing his saxophone, targets in an 10 ft radius will suddenly feel far more generous than they had before. If they had stolen something, including energy or a starseed, they may feel more inclined to give it back. After all, they should be more generous, and that person likely needs it more than they do! It is possible to fight this sensation off with a strong enough will, though this may just result in them being inclined to give something else less important instead. He can channel this magic for a total of 30 seconds.

(Also, this is a teaching and example video, he starts playing the solo at about 1:35)

Oh. He was going to play the saxophone. In another situation, Minnie might have gotten into something like that.

...In this exact situation, she might have been getting into something like that. A cute guy playing jazzy music? Her foot was tapping on the dusty surface of the alleyway. "That's pretty good, bro," she said, and then sighed, and reached into her pocket.

He had a point about feeling trapped, and the mysterious force. He had a point about none of this being good, or right. As she'd mentioned, it was a cult. It was a cult that she was stuck in, but maybe she didn't have to steal any energy at this exact second.

She handed the orb over.

"Okay, but if you actually know how to get out, spill," she told him. "People love to explain how bad the Negaverse is to me. Like, trust me, I know. Nobody's been able to tell me what to do about the fact that I'm stuck with this power and this literal magic cult brand on my," she touched her chest, "Heart? Soul?"

Once he lowered the saxophone from his lips, he offered her a grin. "Thanks. I spend a lot of time practicing, so I do appreciate the compliments." He was, after all, a seasoned pro, but he wasn't going to mention that part.

He was just going to lavish in the praise, and also in the fact that she did actually give him the energy back.

Abzu took it, making the mental note to return it to the woman he saw who had been exiting the alleyway nearby, looking a little sleepy. He was fairly sure that was the woman this agent had been draining before he had seen her. It wouldn't take much effort, and in fact he had made some moves to start heading in her direction to just push it in her direction.

That was the point of getting the energy back after all.

It seemed like she actually wanted to get out of there. If he knew how to get out, if he knew how to get away from the chaos, she wanted to know the details. And he actually knew the details.

"The tl;dr of it is that it usually involves finding a princess or Cosmos, I believe. Cosmos is a force that watches over all the starseeds somewhere in the Galaxy. I wouldn't worry too much about that. The princesses are people with great power in the world of the senshi. So not knights like we would be."

Abzu didn't really know anything about the reality of Royal Knights, so he couldn't necessarily give context about those. But he did know that princesses could purify, and he had seen that.

"Their magic allows them to push the chaos out of your starseed, AKA your soul, and that pulls what's covering you and forcing you to stay in that Negaverse that you're in, forcing you to give energy to strange source we don't understand. Leaving does come with its own complications, but it is worth it to get away from having to mine from civilians."

He felt like Pendour right then and there--

"A princess?" she raised an eyebrow at that, too, but then shrugged it off with an "Okay, bro." Did that sound like something out of a kid's TV show? Yes. Did it make any less sense than anything else that was going on? No.

She was a member of something called the Negaverse. She was just going with things at this point. She didn't think this guy had any reason to trick her. Like most of the knights she'd met, he just wanted her to stop draining energy.

Honestly, they all had a point there.

"I mean, I believe you. You're the first person to give me a straight answer about this. Cosmos sounds hard to get in touch with," and also possibly like she wasn't even human, "But you're saying these Princesses are just certain people who can reverse what happened to me?"

It made sense. It was a normal music teacher dude who had done this to her in the first place.

"But, okay. What are the complications?"

Abzu's laugh was gentle after she cited, the fact that naming a princess seemed a little silly. He recognized what okay bro in that tone likely meant. "I know, it took me by surprise too."

"But yeah, they're just people, not like. Cosmic space forces." He had no real idea how Cosmos worked, honestly. "I actually know a couple of them." He would call one of them down right now if she were in a situation where she needed to get out now, but he knew the reality of purification. He wouldn't necessarily recommend rushing out if she didn't have to. And that mostly came down to the complications.

For a purification, he would actually recommend preparing.

"For the Negaverse specifically, Metallia seems to keep some kind of hold on your memories. When you purify, you actually lose some part of your memories. It usually seems to be like half of your life, so either they have of your life where you're an agent, or the half of your life where you were a civilian." He rubbed his neck. "Sometimes all of it, but I think that only happens in traumatizing purifications where it happens in a rush. If you're looking to get out in a more measured fashion, I don't think that would happen to you."

He was doing his best to be fully honest, but he hoped that didn't freak her out too much.

"Since you would have more time, if you were to pursue this," he hoped he had sold this right and hadn't immediately scared her off, "I would recommend starting to document things. I actually know a few people who have been through this. They might be able to help that process."

He sighed.

"And with that memory loss, you would lose your current identity. But we do have a good system for rebuilding that identity on this side."

Minnie shrugged, still seeming pretty jovial about the whole thing. "I mean, if I remember right, the Negaverse has a castle that's named The Dark Kingdom, so, it's fine." Her smile pulled more to one side than the other, showing a dimple. "It's like, okay, dude, we're living in a Disney movie. I get it."

She did stop talking to actually listen to what he was saying about the downsides to getting out of this whole mess, though. It had been months now that she'd been working on trying to get information about stuff that went deeper than Negaverse bad, you should stop.

That senshi that had told her there might be some way to leave hadn't had any details, but she'd figured there was going to be some kind of a catch. She hadn't guessed memory loss, though, and that thought made her suck a breath in through her teeth.

"So it's a coin flip on if I forget a few hours a week from the past year-ish or if I have to start over from scratch?" she asked. "There's no way to predict it?" She spent a few more seconds trying to process this before just saying, with a shake of her head, "Bruh."

Her face moved through about three different expressions in the following moments, before she added, "But if it's that or getting pressured into hurting people forever, and maybe getting more sucked up the villain cult pyramid scheme? I guess I gotta roll the dice." She chewed on the insides of her cheeks. "You know some of these people? You can get me in touch? Not tonight, but, maybe in a couple weeks?"

That would give her enough time to think things through, work things out with her family, and get whatever affairs she needed in order.

"I'm pretty sure my Evil Incorporated iPad isn't set up to let me text someone like that," she said, pulling out the tablet to show him.

Abzu couldn't help his outright snort. He supposed they were living in something of a Disney movie. It felt like less of one once he had started digging in deeper and people started legitimately dying, and he started meeting people like Ibirapitá, and there were attempts on his life, but a lot of the surface level things and names and things like princesses? "That castle name is very Disney."

Also, felt like the opposite of Magic Kingdom...

Abzu let her have her time to think, because bruh was right. It sucked that there was no way to predict it. Obviously, in her case, it would be a lot better if she lost her agent half. She really wouldn't be losing much. "No real way to predict it at all from what I can tell. A friend of mine, Emain Ablach, was convinced he'd lose his entire civilian life and planned accordingly." He snickered. "He was pleasantly surprised when he lost the agent half instead."

It did make all of his plans to perhaps give some details about the Negaverse once he moved over a little more difficult, but...

Mentioning one of the purified people he knew hopefully gave some backup to the fact he wasn't talking out of his a**. He could mention Nectaris too, if she needed more. But for now, he would give her the silence, shifting from foot to foot and giving her a bit of distance--murmuring a brb of course--to fully pass off the energy ball in the interim, returning fully by the time she talked.

His expression shifted to a grin when she agreed. Also, villain cult pyramid scheme was not only the best description he had heard of the Negaverse, it was also one he was keeping in his back pocket for any counter propaganda they might have needed to make... "Yeah, absolutely. Like I said, I know some princesses. But the Evil Incorporated iPad won't get you in touch with me, no..."

How to move forward from here?

Honestly, in his opinion, he clearly had her. She was talking about how she wanted to get out, and she just wanted a couple weeks. And that was fine! Did he give her his own number, or did he mention that he had a way to get a hold of her himself with his own knight ring? That was only a one-way ticket though...

Wait. Luke had urged him to get a burner phone. He had one of those. This was easy. He dug that out of his subspace, turning it toward her.

"I can get a hold of you myself. Our knight rings actually let us get a hold of anyone from any side. But! For the opposite, just text me at the number in here, and I'll get the ball rolling. Just put your details in there, and I'm sure you know how to find mine."

Without his actual name, of course. If she was legitimately leaving, she'd know that soon enough, anyway.

There was no way to tell what you'd forget. She grimaced at that, and then accepted it.

It meant that she was going to have to have some tough conversations in the next few weeks, but maybe that was a good thing. It already felt like there were way too many secrets in her family. One of her siblings always showed up to family dinners with new scars and never talked about where they came from. Minnie went to the same dinners and never talked about the Negaverse.

At this point, Minnie had some guesses about the scars, though. In that second, she made up her mind. The blunt talks were starting with Sadie.

She looked at the burner phone that the knight had handed her, then shook her head. She didn't have anything to give him but her real phone number, and she might not have known a lot about the Negaverse, but she knew they were always watching.

"Do the knight thing," she said, shoving the phone back into his hand. "That sounds safer. I know that's the other downside. The Negaverse isn't gonna like this."

She didn't know if they'd actually come after her, but she wouldn't put it past them.

"Speaking of which," she said, then put two fingers to her forehead and gave a mini salute before turning away. "Later, bruh. Thanks for giving me a straight answer."

With that, she started trotting back out towards the street.
