She wasn't even powered up when she saw it.

Emmy had gone to her favorite coffee shop a block down the street, since she'd wanted a change of scenery while she edited her most recent video. She sipped at an iced latte at a bistro table on the street, enjoying a little fresh air, while she tried an audio effect or two.

Glancing around between files, she could see the manicured garden beds by the street. She could see the neon lights of other businesses begin to stand out as night began to fall.

Then there was the sleeping bag, visible in the alleyway between the ramen restaurant and the hair salon.

Really? Usually the homeless were able to tell that this part of the city wasn't for them. If the hostile architecture didn't discourage them, most of the people would. The most logical explanation was that someone had made a mistake, though, either by not saying anything at all or by doing something worse like offering them food.

Now this was going to get out of control unless someone did something right away.

Closing up her laptop, Emmy finished her coffee quickly and walked down to the next alley over, where she powered up. Immediately she teleported straight to the sleeping bag, sticking her hand into the person's chest before they could do something inconvenient like screaming. She didn't often starseed on a whim, but she'd make an exception for this.

She didn't need an entire camp starting.

With a single motion, the gem was in her hand and the person laid still.

There was a part of Promethei, that, in all sincerity, wanted to pretend he didn't just see that.

Maybe he wasn't as good of a guy as the others in his quartet. He could own that. But another part of him mostly just wanted to make it home alive. He knew he was facing a general. He could feel the fact that she was a General, for one. For another, that easy teleportation? He had seen Borax teleport with ease too but something seemed different about a general doing it.

More likely to be lethal, for one. He valued his life a bit more than some other random person's life.

But there was a gnawing voice in the back of his mind that told him that the other three would not just ignore it. He probably should go deal with it even if this wasn't his club and it wasn't a spot he needed to ********? The homeless?" Promethei tossed his beaker up and down in his hand. "Y'all agents can't even pretend it's an even fight, can't you?"

It wouldn't be even against him either, probably. He was still a squire.

Tragedy.

"Why don't you just put the starseed back and we can all just go home?" Preferably home, for sure. He wouldn't have to want to pursue her to make sure she actually left the area. Maybe she would just teleport away as fast as she got there or... Some bullshit like ******** Negas.

A squire. Of course. She'd been so focused on speed and if the people at the restaurant had eyes on her that she hadn't been thinking about auras. She sighed, even as she used the moment that he wasted on insulting her to pop the starseed safely into her subspace pocket.

She wasn't going to let someone like this make a scene and ruin her effort.

"There's nothing in our rhetoric that says this is an even fight," she said, and she summoned her axe to her hand, running a thumb parallel to the sharpened edge for dramatic effect. "We're going to win."

Her smile was cold.

"See it as a necessary sacrifice, or don't," she told him. Her job was to get the public on her side, not magical men in oversized parkas who, judging by the way he was talking to her, had been involved in this for long enough to form his own opinions.

"Either way, I suggest you leave me be."

Aw ********. That was another possibility he hadn't really considered, that she would just disappear the starseed. The homeless guy was now dead either way. Not like he could just force her to give it back when it was in magical sub-dimension land, or whatever the ******** the pocket he could just pull random things out of was.

Honestly, even if he did beat her to a pulp, the ******** would it do if the starseed wasn't even in a place he could reach it?

He should have just taken the attack-first approach that he had been taking. So much for trying to show any g-ddamn caution.

"Cute, that you think you will win this one." Logistically, he did know that they on Order were outnumbered. Badly. Honestly, in some ways, it was surprising that they hadn't lost yet. He knew enough statistics to tell him how uneven this bullshit was; he had enough of a self-preservation instinct to know that even on a personal level.

Whatever.

Instead of opting for the leave-her-be approach, he hurled his weapon in her direction.

Could he save the homeless guy? No, but now it was personal.

This one had bluster, even in the face of illogical odds in his favor, and a battle that had technically already been lost when she'd tucked the starseed away. It was either charming or stupid, depending on how you looked at it.

Given that he'd just thrown some kind of heavy clay pot at her and it had hit her right in the ribs, she firmly decided that he was stupid.

That hurt. That was going to bruise.

She'd been working on biting back her squeaky hisses so that she didn't embarrass herself in situations like this, and so she dug her teeth into her lower lip, fingers going white-knuckled against the handle of her axe.

She didn't want to overly draw this out, but she did want to show him some of the dangers of dealing with a General.

She swung the axe towards him.

Did he have a lot of bluster? Probably. For one, he was Texan. For another, even back when he was a civilian, he threw a punch at Ransomite. Promethei didn't take terribly well to the Negaverse. Especially when the ******** tried to ******** with him.

... Ransomite turned out to be Elliot, who was now Teegan and Emain Ablach, but that was neither here nor there.

Not when she was actually charging him with her ********. What did he--

Wait.

He smirked, ducking down and seeming to blend into his surroundings. Did he know this wouldn't stop her from hitting him? Yeah. That swing still scraped his very covered arm. But he moved, and swept in another direction to swing a punch at her before (hopefully!) she could locate him.

ASPECT OF MERCURY: A Mercury Knight's form becomes staticy / glitchy in appearance, as if they were products of the advanced technology that is their planet's pride and joy. This enables them to blend in with their surroundings slightly: opponents have trouble seeing them if they are standing still, and their movements can be difficult to read in close combat.

She might have hit coat and not skin, but Jadarite still saw the way that her axe got close to him.

He seemed to have some idea, though, and she squinted at him as some kind of magic activated. It was like his visuals were flickering, and she couldn't quite see him against the brick wall.

She was interested in this, but not interested enough to see if there was a more dangerous side to the magic. There had already been enough annoyances and interruptions for one night.

"You're trying," she told him, her smile thin, "But I already won."

With a nod to the body next to her, she vanished into the air.

"Coward!!" ********! "Afraid to face a ********' squire?"

Or just didn't feel like dealing with him. She was right. She had already gotten what she had been looking for. A starseed from a homeless guy who never stood a damn chance. Honestly, it was cowardly! Going for the most disadvantaged in society?

Really?

Honestly, though? The ******** else did he expect?

What was he supposed to do with the dead guy? It wasn't like he could actually be meaningfully brought back. The guy had his soul snatched. Not like Promethei could get that back from wherever it would end up.

Guess he should try to give his family the best chance at getting some closure if they still existed or cared, right? That's what the others would do. With a sigh, he pulled out his burner phone from his subspace pocket and put in a quick call to 911.
