Set after Explosive DistractionsAs soon as they had done the little ritual and arrived at her Wonder, Nikki slipped her hand out of Promethei’s and skipped a few steps away. She stretched her hands out towards the three buildings, and then she spun and spun so that she could point to everything else around her at the same time. Then she just spun because it made her happy, giggling up at the Earth above. “Welcome to Mare Nectaris,” she said, stopping the spinning once her head started to feel fuzzy. “AKA the Sea of Nectar! I’ve been thinking about it some, and I do think it’s gonna live up to its name if the flowers start growing back in a little more.” The grass, a bluish green variety, was perking up more than it had been at first, and there were wildflowers here and there dotting the rolling hills around the buildings themselves, but at the moment it wasn’t quite a sea of flowers yet. It was fun to imagine, though, and every time she came up here it looked a little bit nicer. “There were real butterflies last time I was up here, so maybe if you look around you can see something!” Viatrix might be into the butterflies. She wasn’t as sure about Promethei. She knew he had mostly come up here to see the lab. She liked the butterflies, though, and grinned as she saw a flutter of cream wings nearby. Also, was that, “Ooh! A bumblebee!” A pink striped bumblebee, nosing around from one flower to the next. It might have been the most adorable thing that Nectaris had ever seen. Don’t get distracted, she told herself, but she was still definitely staring at the bumblebee, even as she said, “So yeah, the front building and the back right one are these greenhouse conservatory things. Like, butterfly houses, best I can tell.” Although, the butterflies seemed to be doing pretty good outside, so maybe there was more to it than that. “The back left one is the research one, like, with the lab and stuff.”

When they set foot on her wonder, Viatrix dropped her cat form, swapping to the form she was considerably more comfortable in. She stretched her humanoid arms to the sky as Promethei jumped, and glanced to his side to see the once tiny cat now be a … small human person instead.
He knew Mauvians could do that. He had seen enough. He just didn’t realize this one could –
Never mind.
Viatrix skipped over to join Nikki first, leaving Promethei to shake his head and follow behind them acting like he had never seen a thing. “Sea of nectar, butterflies, sounds like it’s coming along nicely!” If it was the sea of nectar, in general, were there going to be other little bugs here? Viatrix would just need to tamp down her still cat-like instinct to chase them around. Nectaris the Wonder probably needed those–
Probably.
“I haven’t seen any creatures at my wonder yet,” admitted Promethei. Perhaps he wasn’t looking hard enough, though, if what was showing at her wonder were things like butterflies. And – bumblebees! Even if he was an inorganic chemist who didn’t care quite so much about Earthan biology, there was an element of alien biology that caught his attention, even if from just a chemical perspective. For one, he wondered what was in this bumblebee’s genes to make it pink instead of the yellow and black he was used to from most bees…
He leaned in a bit closer to take a better look at it. “My wonder is a university, though. Wonder if we had anything like these conservatories.”
And labs. Of course, the labs. He wanted to get a look at those. Her mentioning them was almost enough to entirely grab his attention, and his eyes slid away from the bumblebee fascination, but seeing the cream wings flutter by brought him right back.
“The bee is so cute!” gushed Viatrix, clapping her hands. Maybe she needed to start thinking of ways to categorize these for her charges, too…

Livie didn’t blink when Viatrix turned into a girl. If anything, she thought that maybe she should have brought her up here sooner. It was super fun, getting to see her stretch her legs a little bit, and obviously Livie wasn’t gonna say no to anybody who wanted to skip around through the flower fields with her.
“Yeah,” she told Viatrix as she looked over her flower sea, which was still patchy but coming along, “It turns out this whole time the secret was just to come up here sometimes. Oh, and also to clean a lot, I guess.”
It had taken a couple of hours, and a couple of trips, but she’d gotten the worst of the broken glass off the ground, and then she’d done the dusting thing with Encke.
Since Viatrix was looking at the bee, Nectaris took that as a sign that she could look at it too without being rude, and she popped down to a squat with another little giggle.
“Hello, little friend! You’re so round! Ugh, I can’t even!”
The bee clumsily buzzed away from her. Oh no! She was probably being too loud.
“And you’re my favorite color,” she said, whispering this time. The bee did not seem to care one way or another. It did, however, seem to like Viatrix’s bright colors, and it bumbled close to her.
“You have a university?” She asked, turning to Promethei from where she sat. “That’s cool!” Maybe if he ever let her see it, she could find some more interesting books for Encke that weren’t just random lab notes in another language.
“What’s it even like on Mercury? I don’t think I’ve really talked to many knights from there before now.”
She guessed there was also Diryas if you were being technical, but it wasn’t like they’d talked about space.

Viatrix nodded enthusiastically. “Yeah, that’s usually what your brother recommends to people. Come to your homeworld or wonder. Learn to let it love you, and love it back. Corny stuff like that.” She giggled. “Seems to work, though!” Encke would be excited to hear the progress there, she was sure, speaking of advice he would have given.
The bee distracted her from her thoughts, and she gave a small, quiet squeal in her delight. Best to not scare it off again.
“Why do you think its so drawn to me?” she whispered, leaning toward Nikki. “Is it the colours of my uniform? Does it look like flowers?” The colours might’ve been about right for flowers. Closer than Promethei’s, at least.
“Could be the way your uniform reflects, too.”
Viatrix grinned at Promethei. So cool. The Enckean bioluminescence thing had some fun uses–
Promethei’s attention got pulled from bees and laps by her question. He frowned. “Don’t think there’s many of us in these parts, which might be why.” Was that a bad thing? Was Mercury just always a smaller origin point for knights, or were there some missing in general? Did he even care? “Only other one I’ve met myself is Imhotep.” Maybe he just didn’t get out enough.
Eh. His group and his connections worked well enough for him.
“Well?” Viatrix bounced on her toes. “I haven’t met any of y’all either. Answer the question! What’s it like??”
“Uh, cold, icy. Lots of technology everywhere. Definitely not like this. Feels more like a trek through icy canyons to get to tech hubs and cities than anything else.” He shrugged to adjust the coat on his shoulders and perhaps also make a point about the furs. “Explains our fits. Very far north vibes overall. Imhotep isn’t as fur-covered, but that prol’ly won’t last.”
“So it’s cool technology, but like, cold edition.” Viatrix tapped her chin.
“That’s right.” Promethei rubbed his neck. “Have you seen Game of Thrones? The stuff north of the Wall feels apt sometimes. Just with more tech.”
Viatrix had not seen Game of Thrones directly, but considering what she had read, she’d take his word for it–

“Yeah. I know,” she said to Viatrix, the corners of her mouth turning down and her shoulders rising up at the thought of Encke’s space opinions. “He’s, like, obsessed with planet bonding. Obsessed with Transcendence. He’s like, If you’re gonna be kissing Chaos boys, you better at least be glowing for it, which, like,”
With a huff, she threw herself all the way to the ground, so that she was splayed out in a patch of space clover, staring grumpily at the starry sky. “I get it, he has a point, but also he’s so pushy about it! It’s annoying! If he left me alone about everything, I might’ve started coming up here sooner, y’know?”
Mid rant, she glanced at Promethei from where she was laying on the ground, like she was suddenly remembering that he was there.
Welp, he knew stuff about her now, she guessed. It was just like how she knew some secrets about him. She hadn’t been going to talk about the boys, she was gonna distract herself, but there it was now.
“I told you,” she said. “Boy drama. It’s a whole thing. And yeah, I’m kissing Chaos boys. Well, mostly just the one right now, but,” she shook her head as best she could. “Please be cool about it.”
If he wasn’t cool about it, it was gonna be kind of awkward, ‘cause she wasn’t leaving until she at least showed Viatrix the lab.
She just needed to say something to make sure it didn’t get too tense. Yeah! Considering what Promethei had said about Mercury and his Wonder and everything, she rolled over on her side to look at him.
“It sounds like the technology on your Wonder?” She paused a second, for some extra drama. “Is cool.”
It was a pun. It was perfect! She made finger guns.

“He’s just worried about you,” supplied Viatrix, with a quiet giggle. She was doing what she had heard a lot of younger siblings or some stubborn children did. If they got offered advice, they wouldn’t take it, because they would do it their own way. Viatrix, having no siblings, did not quite understand this, but she did have enough knowledge of television shows and tropes from listening to Anser babble about them.
(Anser thought television shows were silly, for the most part, but she did watch them and had a lot of thoughts about tropes and genres at the same time.)
In total fairness, she was also worried about one of her knight charges and her predilection toward chaos boys, but she knew reinforcing that she should see if she could transcend wouldn’t get her anywhere with Encke being how he was. She would do her own thing. He would do his. And maybe in the end, maybe it would work out.
Promethei, nosy as always, kept quiet when Nectaris started babbling and ranting at Viatrix, who had taken it with ease. So her boy drama was actually her chaos boy drama. He could see where that would complicate things all around. There was a part of him that felt himself spike to anger in the background that she would dare even try to date men of chaos, but he forced himself to tamp it down. She had told him to be cool.
He was as cool as a cucumber.
To be honest, though, what rights did he have to say anything? “Look, didn’t know it at the time, but I dated someone in chaos for like … five? Years?” Should he be timing how long they had been in chaos or how long they had dated, because those were two very different ******** numbers– “So long as none of them has tried to murder you, I guess.”
While he had no way of knowing until he almost murdered Ransomite, it was still a fair condition, he thought. Don’t delete husbands, lifehack with Dr. Castaneda—
The pun did get a chuckle from him, though.
“Guess it’s a good thing it’s cool technology too. If it’s anything like Earth up there, I know those kinds of machines usually need some extensive coolant systems to work. My planet has a bunch of them.” Not that he was a computer scientist, but that knowledge was close enough to chemistry that he had figured out a few things.
After all, some analytical chemists found their full-time careers in other sciences, like computer science!

“I mean, one of them tried to kill me?” she said, pushing herself up so that she was sitting. She hugged her knees into her chest. “But that was after we broke up. I dunno. It was a weird situation. We’d been dating before I purified, and I thought that maybe I could use that relationship to get him to come with me, basically same strategy as I used with Ransomite, except with him instead of romance it was a friend-mentory thing.”
She brought that up so that Promethei would see where she was coming from, although she had to admit that he was doing a really good job at staying cool.
“Except he kept getting weird about stuff, and also he was too committed to Metallia and his husband who’s a General, so I had to break things off and he really didn’t like that.”
She hadn’t died though! So that was good.
“Now I’m kissing these two other guys, but, like, they’re a lot nicer.” They treated her a lot differently than Albite ever had, even though they were still with Chaos. Nobody she talked to about this stuff seemed to really understand that or care about it, though, so she wasn’t expecting Promethei to be any different.
“Although it’s still kinda a hot mess. I probably should be careful, and maybe even try to bond with my Wonder or whatever, just,” she puffed out her cheeks, and then let out the breath, “I wish he wasn’t so weird about the whole thing.”
She looked to Promethei once again, and realized there was no point in even trying to redirect this time.
“Sorry. I know I brought you up here to talk about science.”

Promethei supposed he had volunteered for this when he mentioned that boy drama was basically his expertise at this point. And in some ways, it was! The meandering road from the loss of his husband to the forgiveness they were just reaching gave him a unique perspective on what seemed to be her particular struggle.
Chaos boys.
His brows lifted in alarm when she named that one of these chaos boys did, in fact, try to kill her. “I think trying to rekindle relationships you had before changing sides can be a bit of a minefield.” He would admit that, in the long run, he and Emain Ablach and Imhotep and Amoris had all gotten lucky. It was a miracle that Emain Ablach had lived to see the day and it was a miracle that Promethei hadn't ended up finished off by an opportunistic agent.
He was glad to be where he was now, though. There had been a reason why the thought had bubbled to his mind multiple times over the past few days that he didn't know how he was surviving without that – without him, without their quartet being whole.
He ignored the gooseflesh hiding under his sleeves. “Glad to hear they're nicer.” His brows knit. “Think they got a better chance of not remaining chaos guys than your ex Metallia-devotee?”
Was he concerned? Maybe, but not in the way that Ignacio–Ignacio!!--seemed to project. Be cool, Promethei.
Be cool.
Viatrix giggled when Nikki apologized. “I mean, think he did say he's an expert in this drama stuff.” She sat up, staring at a cute little bumblebee nearby. “Maybe you just knew it was time to talk about it.”
Promethei rubbed his neck, but he didn't say anything about that, specifically. It wasn't just that he was a messy nosy drama gay or anything like that – though he did have somewhat relevant direct experience with this one.
“He’s just worried about you. Know if my idiot brother started shacking up with chaos ladies, I'd be concerned.” He snorted. “But if you do wonder if you should see if you can bond with your world, is it a fair question to ask if you think if they'll ever purify?”
That was probably a source of the drama he had to guess.

“You don’t have to look so freaked out,” she told him, when she saw the way his eyes widened when she talked about the whole Albite situation. “I told you, I broke up with that one. Now it’s just, my gross ex who is also a Nega kind of situation.”
Which, might not have sounded better, but he was gonna have to take her word for it that it was. She’d been so sad and stressed out all the time when she’d been trying to make things work with Albite, and while stuff with the other guys wasn’t always easy, at least it never left her feeling like she was about to get murdered, or like she wasn’t good enough.
It was still drama, but it was an improvement!
“Okay, so the one guy I was kissing was also a friend from before, and he didn’t really like the Negaverse, he was just feeling trapped?” Then stuff had happened and a bank had ended up exploding and it might have been both of their faults, but she decided to gloss over that part. “And then we were talking about everything over a couple of months and it was like, he was finally gonna leave! Except instead he ghosted me. Only, then?”
She leaned forwards, this time looking straight at Promethei since he seemed to be enjoying the drama, anyway.
“I ended up meeting up with his boyfriend! Which, like, I knew he had a boyfriend, we’d talked about all that stuff already. And even though his boyfriend’s in the Negaverse, his boyfriend is trying to get him to leave, too. It’s like, really complicated.”
Her cheeks went a little bit pink. “And then maybe it got more complicated ‘cause the boyfriend is really pretty, and nice, and smart, and, uh. Yeah. He’s actually the main one I’m kissing right now!”

Was he enjoying the drama?
No! Well… maybe. He did his best to mostly keep his interest as a legitimate interest and not just the kind of interest he needed a popcorn gif for. This was one of Emain Ablach’s closest friends! He did want to make sure she was okay, especially because if she wasn't, well, Emain Ablach wouldn't be, and he couldn't have that.
Still, though, as someone who once went through the blossoming of a single relationship to a whole polycule, there was something about the way she described the second one was endearing. “Heh, you got a little triad forming. Remind me one day to tell you how I started noticing how nice Diryas' friends were.” To be honest, talking about his husbands had been one of his favourite things to do. Would be nice to have it back in its totality.
It was alarming the first one had ghosted, but with chaos involved, he could only think of so many reasons. Was the first one, the original one she knew, even still alive?
He had to be if the second one still had track of him. Hm.
This all might have been more complicated than it sounded on the surface, especially with the second chaos boy trying to nudge the first one out, too. Why wasn't he just going with? “Y’know,” he snorted, “might could be easier to get the first one to move if the second one comes too.”
Promethei, for his part, thought that this whole thing she had going on would be easier if everyone was Order in the first place, but that wasn't where he was meeting her for this story.
And also, it wouldn't be fair of him, considering the mess that the whole Ransomite fiasco had been.
Viatrix tilted her head. “I mean, that's a good point,” though she didn't necessarily have the impression he was looking to purify.
… Not that she had listened to Livie and Teegan chat or anything.

Aww, he thought the concept of a triad was cute! It made sense, since he was into poly stuff too, but it still made Nikki grin, even with the drama, to hear someone who was just supportive like that.
She knew they had a way to go before it could actually be some kind of cute little fairytale relationship, though.
“I mean, it’d be a triad if we were in a relationship,” she said, “Which would involve me seeing them more than once a month and also, like. Knowing their real names.”
She didn’t date chaos boys. Not after Albite. Yeah, she got pangs of jealousy when they proposed to each other and not her, but she also knew that acting like what she had was a legit relationship was crossing some kind of line.
“But maybe someday, yeah? After I get them both to purify in some kind of two for one deal, which you’re right, might be my best bet.”
Although with how much Cryolite liked stability, he probably had a better chance of coming over if Fulgurite was already Order and all settled in. Ugh, it was all so complicated!
She was trying hard not to let the stress of it get to her when she wasn’t talking to one of them.
“You can tell me now, if you want,” she told him. “How you guys got together.”
Obviously, they’d already gotten distracted. They’d already started talking about boys, and also, now Nectaris was curious. She hugged her knees tighter and watched him, curious.
“The science will still be there.”

It was fair that she wasn't actually dating them considering she could barely ******** see them, but would the whole dynamic be easier if she was? Guaranteed arms to leap to. Of course, Emain Ablach hadn't had guaranteed arms at all.
Almost had a guaranteed knife through the heart. Remembering the way he held the knife and lunged at Emain Ablach brought him chills.
“Well, someday is a good goal, y’know? Maybe could be enough to get them, too. Guaranteed arrangement.”
Viatrix had known Emain Ablach long enough now that she also couldn't help but to be curious. Viatrix plopped herself down next to Nectaris and mirrored her position, hugging her knees to her chest. Something she could only do like this. She envied the idea of just being able to be like this all the time–
Even though Nikki was right about the science not going anywhere, though, she did chance a couple glances over her shoulder in the direction of the lab.
Promethei's smile was surprisingly sheepish. “Suppose I could just tell you now.” He shifted his weight from one foot to the other, pondering where to start and how to navigate some aspects of their relationship…
Well. He'd done it before. Better to leave them out. “I met Dise online, actually. Reached out to him based on some information in his profile and he responded in kind.” He chuckled. “We talked a bit, and then talked a lot. Found out we were both buddin chemists and the conversation went from there. I was in a four plus one at my university,” no point in naming which one, she probably wouldn't have the context, “so I needed to complete that first, but once I got to the Ph.D. level I started applying elsewhere. Like,” he gestured around him with an open palm.
“Anyway,” he laughed, “got in at DCU. Asked Diryas if he wouldn't mind having a roommate, he said no so long as I helped defray costs, and so I moved in with him. Didn't get together with him right away, just lived with him. But he was very close with two other people already when I moved up, people he had already introduced me to via cam.” He grinned. “Tobias and Teegan.” Promethei was proud of himself for not hesitating when saying his name.
“Didn't get with any of them at first. Diryas had been pretty upfront with his romantic orientation and Tobias made sure I ******** knew it.” He laughed. “Until he didn't. He noticed some changes in Dise's behaviour that figured I had a chance. Told me so. Teeg did, too. And they were right. Found out after they actually had a bet on how long it'd take.” He snorted. “One afternoon Diryas struggled to tell me something, so I got online in a different room and in that, he agreed to be romantically involved.” He shifted once again. “So it was me and him for a bit, though he asked if he could still keep Teegan and Tobias close when we got together. Said of course, didn't think damn much of it.”
His smile softened. “Me and him eventually got married. Teeg read our ceremony. But I noticed over time that my feelings for the other two grew more intense y’know? Toby was so sweet. His hugs were so nice,” he laughed, “and he was always just a perpetual sunshine. Always tried to cheer me up. Always there to fill in the gaps and pick up any pieces.” Zebulon skated around where he had to help pick up the pieces of Tobias's life once, too. That was Tobias’ story to tell. “And Teeg’s like my complement, yeah? I noticed how easily joking and teasing came with him. He responded to it!” Very well. “We would get into arguments that were never actually serious,” well, then, anyway, “take time to watch movies together and eat together and just be in the same place. Noticed Teeg was a lot softer than it seemed on the surface outside of the priest thing, too. He's a hopeless romantic, you know that? Melts my heart a bit, honestly.” The snort was sheepish.
He realized he was babbling a bit, but Viatrix looked like she was still listening so he kept going. “Anyway. One afternoon I got smacked with the realization I kinda liked the ********. Didn't know what to do because I always thought I was just mono, so I dived into Google. Learned how to be poly, how to navigate it, how to avoid being a cowpoke.” He ran a hand over his hair. “Asked Diryas if he minded if I dated them. He asked if it would change our relationship, I said no, so he gave me clearance. Started taking them out on dates. Tobias melted and Teegan loved the feelings.” Something about… recipromanticism? Cupioromantic? “Went from there.”
It had been a while since he had gone out with Teegan. Maybe they were due for that.
As Viatrix stared at him expectantly, he let out a sheepish chuckle. “Anyway. Done babbling. We ended up a quartet like we are. Dise once told me he was basically already dating the other two.” Promethei’s lips ticked up in amusement. “Suppose that shoulda made it more damn obvious why he was so concerned about what his relationship with them would look like after we hooked up.”
Viatrix leaned in, placing her chin in her hands. “You're cute! No wonder Teegan likes you so much.”
Promethei's gaze slid to the side and kept his focus on the bees. “Uh, thanks.”

Nectaris listened to his story, hanging on every word. Not that it was hard to get her attention with stuff like this. Pretty much anything anyone would talk to her about, she’d eat up. She could get into philosophy, recipes, space.
What was her favorite thing to talk about, though? It was people. It was a hundred percent people, and if she was hearing cute romance stories about her friends? That just made it even better.
Teegan was one of the people who she’d talk to about philosophy, and religion, and magic, but he didn’t always know a lot about himself. Memory loss was like that. Chaos had taken it from him. What she was hearing from Promethei about him, and the rest of the quartet, kinda helped fill in some of the pieces for her, though, a little bit.
She nodded eagerly when he talked about meeting Dise online, about being roommates for grad school before stuff blossomed, which was a whole cute trope. She smiled when he talked about getting married, and then getting together with the others finally.
It was sweet.
She did kinda find herself kind of grateful that she’d never gotten too caught up on the idea of monogamy, though. That could’ve turned into a whole thing later on, and she hoped it hadn’t been too awkward for him.
“That’s kinda cute, that you started out as online friends,” she said. Although she had to wonder vaguely if it had been, like, Tinder. Wait, no. You didn’t find roommates from other cities on Tinder, she didn’t think.
Maybe you did. She’d never actually looked at the app, since a lot of people on there kinda wanted one thing.
“What’s his romantic orientation, though? Is he, like, aromantic? Arospec?” There was a little bit of a glint in her eyes as she asked that. Even though she wasn’t aromantic herself, she figured that anyone under the aspec umbrella counted as at least like, connected to her, and she’d give him a little finger gun of having something in common next time they met.
The other option was that Dise had thought he was straight, and that was just funny.
“Viatrix is right, though. It’s sweet how much you like them. I’m glad I’m getting to talk to all of you guys a little bit more, now.”
Promethei wasn’t as weird as she thought he might be given that awkward first fact she’d learned about him. He was just a guy who liked leopard print, and explosions, and cats. He cared a lot about the people he was close to.
Although, she did fix him with a look, since they were talking about Teegan now.
“You’re gonna be nice to him, aren’t you?” she asked. “Now that you guys are getting, like, all the way back together?” Maybe there was still a tiny part of that commanding officer in her, that part of her that wanted what was best for him. “If he’s going with you now, you gotta take care of him, okay?”
Or maybe she just really loved him too, in her own way.

In a way, they were similar in that way. Promethei’s primary interest, besides for his love of chemistry, leopard print, explosives, and his husbands, came down to his interest in people-watching. The stories between people and the way they wove together had a way of hooking him. Even if it had a way of making him a bit of a gossip, code-assigned at this point….
He understood that interest.
An online friend was a way of describing where he and Dise had started. There were a few more elements to it, but there was no point in talking about them because the online friendship was true. They were friends! It was part of the reason why he felt motivated to apply to DCU in the first place and not just stay in Texas.
“He's aro, yeah,” Promethei grinned at that. Right, being on the ace spectra herself, she was probably very understanding of that. “One of those people who ended up having a very small exception. I think he's also used the term greyromantic before. He and Teegan have that aro bit in common.”
Having Nikki call the connection cute had a way of warming him, a bit. Maybe he had recovered a brutal first impression, which was likely important for the long-term recovery between him and Emain Ablach– “Me too!” piped in Viatrix, interrupting the flow of the conversation for a moment. “Look, I helped that guy get his career back in a way that actually works for him and he's lived with us for nearly a year. He's one of mine now, okay?”
“Aren't Mauvians senshi-connected?”
Viatrix giggled. “Doesn't mean I can't adopt knights. The only senshi I live with a-t-m are Encke and sometimes Roka, and then I've helped a bunch of senshi and knights–”
“Fair enough!” Viatrix looked like a proud parent with the way she was puffing her chest out– “But thank you.”
His gaze shifted back to Nikki when he noticed the shift in tone. Two thoughts hit his mind in unison, and he did his best to pick the one that was a bit less… well. “Definitely taking care,” wait, “to make sure that he feels welcome again. I've missed him terribly, yeah? Felt like a damned hole in my ******** life without him.”
He fidgeted.
“Don't want to lose him again. I… feel the need to protect him, really. Negaverse is definitely gonna have eyes on him as a traitor. I'll do what I need to. Don't regret my initial reaction, but thinking of Teegan in any kinda situation like that again twists my stomach a bit.”
He cleared his throat. Admitting that felt awful personal, but maybe it was what Nectaris needed to hear.

“Oooh, he is aromantic!” she said, with a proud little raise of her shoulders. She’d guessed right! “I’ll have to high five him next time I see him. I mean, I’m ace, but it’s close enough, right?” She puffed out her cheeks, thinking for a second. “Does he, like, do high fives?”
She was still trying to figure out how Diryas even communicated.
As Promethei went serious again, though, so did she.
As he spoke, it was like something shifted.
For months, she’d been so focused on protecting Teegan. Even before he’d purified, when he’d been stuck in Chaos, and miserable, she’d done everything she could to get him out of there, to fix the situation. When stuff had come to a head with the husbands and he’d been locked in a bathroom, she’d crawled back to Cybele so that they could get a Princess involved before anyone did anything drastic.
Afterwards, he hadn’t been in as weird of a physical or moral situation, but the drama with his husbands had meant that she’d had to do a lot to make sure his emotions were okay. He deserved not to suffer just for purifying, the way that she had.
She’d had late night conversations with him to take his mind off of stuff. She’d talked to Tobias, and eventually Diryas.
It hadn’t been just her protecting him, obviously. Tobias had been there for most of it, which was part of why they’d started getting along right away. The Bells had stepped in to make sure he had a place to stay. Viatrix had gotten him his job back, like she’d said.
Zeb hadn’t been there for it, though. In a lot of ways, it had felt like he was one of the people that Teegan and therefore Livie had to be wary of.
He’d locked him in a bathroom. He’d backed off in that vulnerable time immediately after the purification.
Honestly? Livie had been mad about it. Really mad.
Now, though, she could feel his emotions coming through his words. Maybe she was getting sappy from all the boy talk, but she thought she could feel the love there, too. She believed him. She didn’t want him to have to have a Teegan-shaped hole in his life anymore.
Which, she hadn’t been about to stop Teegan from going back, but she’d been nervous. Like, scared. Protective.
She was realizing, though, that Zebulon, Promethei, wasn’t someone who she had to protect Teegan from. At least, not anymore.
He was someone who could help her, someone who could help Teegan. He could help to keep Teegan safe from the Negaverse, and he could help to keep him happy in those little everyday ways. He could love him. He would love him.
Nectaris saw that now.
She slowly uncurled from her ball position and pressed herself up to her feet. Were there tears in her eyes? Maybe. It was definitely possible that they were a little bit misty. Then, she stepped forwards and threw her arms around the other knight. She squeezed.
“Okay,” she said, quietly, into his jacket. “Okay. I believe you.” A moment passed.
“Thank you.”
She looked up at him and sucked in a breath so she didn’t sound quite as mushy. “And also, I’m pretty used to the traitor thing. If anyone tries to give him a hard time, you tell me and I’ll help you kick their butts, okay?”
