Belmont had fallen through a surprisingly low number of holes on this trip to his Wonder, despite the cracks that had worsened in the walls. Some things had been knocked to the ground, a few windows were broken, and a few floors had become less stable.
But, Belmont made his way through his Wonder with surprising ease. He didn’t know what he was supposed to do to fix the foundation; he was pretty sure if this building was in Destiny City it would be condemned. And yet, when he fell it was never very far. Sometimes a hole would open up before him, almost with enough warning that he could make the choice to jump down.
After a while, he did.
He couldn’t explain it, but the results were undeniable.
He was in a completely new part of his Wonder, behind a hidden door and in a well fortified room. There were no windows but there were strange instruments all over. He supposed some of them must have been weather related but there were more than looked mystical, like something out of a fantasy movie.
He didn’t have time to examine them, but he did note that it was surprising that all of them seemed safe despite being in the same room as the Code.
It glowed and dimmed in irregular intervals, but Belmont wasn’t going to be deterred. It looked like someone had built it a little throne, safe in a hole on a pillar that went into the ground and through the ceiling in the center of the room. Maybe the brick wall encasing it had protected everything else within it, but Belmont couldn’t understand how they had been spared while the rest of the Wonder was suffering.
He had a lot of questions about this, about everything. He wasn’t going to get them by standing around.
He had to resonate with his Code, which was easy in theory so maybe it was easy in practice? Despite his questions, his mind was at peace. He didn't feel overwhelmed, or bloated with satisfaction. He was here to do a job and he was ready to do all that was necessary.
"Okay, here we go," he murmured. He rolled his shoulders and planted his feet in front of the Code piece. He wasn't sure hwat it might feel like to touch a ball of pure energy but when he did it was warm. Reassuring. Comforting.
He didn't hear any words, didn't see any images, but he could feel it asking for help.
Maybe it had been calling him all along. Maybe every little crack, every broken floor, every strange whisper, was just meant to draw him here.
This felt right.
There was a whole history, an ancient legacy, that he knew nothing about. But he'd found his Code piece.
Now he just had to figure out what that meant.
Maybe fifteen minutes passed. Maybe an hour. For most of it, he just heard the gentle sound of rumbling thunder--peaceful, considering they were on Jupiter. There was something just beyond his reach through all of it. It felt like water moving around him, like he could feel something nearby, guiding him. He couldn't see it.
He wasn't worried.
Belmont was no closer to answers, but when he opened his eyes, the thunder had stopped. The Code was bright and whole.
Peaceful.
And beneath it, reflecting in the bright light, was a key ring that hadn't been there before.
