Waiting for Tryston to return from his business with the Brotherhood in Zena was excruciating. Constynce would never get used to him being away for so long on dangerous missions, but now there was more than ever before on the line. She wanted him by her side for his steadfast support and unconditional love while she faced the most nerve-wracking but exciting and joyous time of her life. She had two tiny babies growing within her, and the responsibilities of being a mom were intimidating. Her grandparents and the ladies of the village were endlessly supportive, but they also watched and hovered and all around annoyed her. They meant well, but she was ready to pull out her hair.

Thankfully, there were still some around who didn’t feel like she was their pet to take care of. A couple younglings were fascinated with Constynce’s growing belly, always offering their help but never forcing it. They were a fresh breath of air, and also made her think about her own future. Her own little babies would quickly be of an age to run around and get into mischief. She didn’t have much interaction with younglings up to now, so perhaps it was time she got herself some experience…

“So, what sorts of games do you like to play?” Constynce looked down at the two girls sitting beside her.

Tipa cocked her head, her pin straight pigtails shifting with the motion. “There’s lots a games to play. Tag’s fun, and hide and seek, and-” More games were listed in a steady stream of chatter. Flora pursed her lips after a long moment and nudged her friend. “Come on, Tipa. Miss Contynce can’t do all that runnin’. She’s pregnant! It’s gotta be easier games. Like memory cards, or truth or dare.” Tipa grinned brightly. “Oh! Wanna play truth or dare?”

Truth or dare? That sounded positively dangerous in the wrong hands! Contynce chuckled warily. “I suppose I would be willing to try.” The rules were explained and the girls insisted Constynce get the first question. She picked Flora, who chose dare. Constynce tapped her lip to consider what she should pick. “I dare you.. to give Tipa a great big hug.”

The girls burst out with giggles. “You’re silly, Miss Constynce. You gotta pick things I might not wanna do. But it’s my turn!” The girl chose Constynce, who picked dare. “I dare you to roll in the dirt!”

Constynce blinked a couple times before she laughed. “I thought you said things we wouldn’t want to do.” She dropped from the porch to gently lie on the dirt path and rolled about with a grin. The girls squealed with delight above her until she got back up. The younglings went back and forth a few times before Tipa looked at her again. She chose truth.

Tipa’s eyes narrowed with concentration. “Oh, I know! Tell the truth-” she leaned forward with interest, “-are you and mister Tryston really in love?”

Constynce’s cheeks flared warmly. “Oh, that’s an easy one. Of course we are.”

Flora’s brow knit. “But why? He’s so..” She pursed her lips while trying to find the right word. “..cold. Like Zena. He’s not like Tale.”

Contynce paused. She hadn’t expected the game to go this route… but she couldn’t fault the children. Times often changed slowly in small villages. “I’ve been there. Zena itself is cold, but the people are full of life. Like the plants that grow there, they grow hearty and strong to survive the land they live on.” Her smile warmed. “Tryston is like that. He had to grow up tough, but his heart is anything but cold.” She leaned in a little, her tone going a little more serious. “Besides, there are cold people in Tale. Cold people can come from anywhere.”

The girls looked at each other and then nodded in earnest. “Like Mr. Daisal?” Tipa frowned. “He’s always so mean.”

Constynce nodded. “Mr. Daisal has his own history that influenced his choices, making him who he is today. That doesn’t automatically mean they deserve our fear and hate though. Once you’re older, you will meet many more people from outside of Tale. Keep a hold of your warmth so that you can share it with others.”

The girls nodded again. Apparently the discussion was over and they launched back into the game. After a few rounds, Flora asked Constynce to choose. The young woman chose dare. Flora grinned with a mix of mischievousness and eager hope. “I dare you to give Mr. Daisal some flowers!”

Oh… Dammit.
