The questions and challenges started out rather basic and fun. Handstand on one hand until your next turn. Kiss so-and-so. Tell who your favorite mother is. Kyrrha had been enjoying herself. Then the tone shifted into something much less wholesome. If you could get rid of any rule, which would it be? Which of the four races of Aishan do you think is the lesser of all? Dare you to steal from the elder’s hut.
“I dare you to set fire to one of the Yaeli houses.”
Kyrrha stared for a long moment and blinked slowly. “Excuse me?”
Brigertai grinned sharply and tossed a heavy dreadlock back over her shoulder. The warrior’s eyes shined with challenge and curiosity. “You heard me. I said that I dare you, Kyrrha, to go find one of those houses those pathetic, weakling Yaeli live in and burn it to the f-ing ground.” She leaned forward with her teeth gleaming hungrily. “Well?”
Kyrrha shifted uncomfortably. What was she supposed to say to that? She was no fan of the Yaeli, but they were supposed to be coexisting. Open hostilities had been banned since before she was born! “Well, what? I could get in serious trouble for that. What if someone got hurt?”
Brigerta stuff out her lower lip in a mock pout. “Oh, dear. I really did not think out that dare completely, now did I? How silly of me.” She snorted and rolled her eyes. “Come on. The risk is what makes it a dare. You’ve said you agree with us that the earthlings are filth. Why would it matter if some oversized maggot gets hurt?”
Kyrrha looked around to see if anyone else would back her up, but most of the women there by now were of like minds with the warrior, and everyone else was too wary of said warrior to say anything. She tightened up her jaw and shook her head. “Seriously, have you hit your head recently? They don’t deserve the free reign they have, but to burn down a house? That just seems..” she narrowed her eyes and raised her chin, “..petty.”
Brigerta’s eyes widened with surprise before they narrowed angrily. “Well then, if it’s so beneath you, you get the failure punishment instead.” Her grin rose again as she stood up and pulled her blade clear. “I get a lock of your hair. The whole lock, too. Right up to your scalp. Maybe I’ll make a belt out of it…”
—
And that was how Kyrrha found herself sneaking through the foliage alongside the Yaeli village so late in the evening. She would rather cause a little damage to those glowing eye freaks than have Brigerta have any amount of her hair. Talk about an insult to have someone just take a lock of one's hair. If she had, she would never hear the end of how she had lost her hair due to cowardice and shirking a challenge. That was unacceptable!
The wide leaves were pushed aside as she slipped through the evening and pressed herself up against the wall of the home. She went as still as a stone and listened as intently as she could. When she had waited long enough and heard nothing, she crept around to look into the windows. The place was dark, and there didn’t seem to be anyone awake home. She looked around at the passing path before she let out a long breath. It seemed like no one was around. Okay. Leave no traces, let no one get hurt, and all would be well. She could return to Brigerta and the others with her head high.
She set the kindling, hit the flint, started the flame, and tossed it into a window. The flame grew and caught a table and the curtains around the window.
Then she grabbed down the burning curtains, let out a cry of warning, banged on the door as hard as she could, and ran when she heard a cry respond.
–
Back at the village, she strode into the gathering with a long, confident stride. “There, I set a place on fire, you maniac.” She tossed the smoldering curtains at the ground and leaned forward with her eyes locked on her adversary. “Truth or dare?”
Brigerta plucked up the cloth for inspection. It was indeed Yaeli fabric, and it was indeed burning… Her eyes narrowed as they raised up to meet Kyrrha’s. “Dare.”
Kyrrha grinned. “I dare you to go to bed immediately, for the rest of the night.” Silly? Yes. Petty? Yes. Satisfying? Hell yes.
