Spring storms can often appear with out little notice and last for days. They are filled with strong winds and heavy rain, which means one must halt their travel if they are able to even get outside during the downpour. Your character has found themself stuck away from home in an area with others seeking to avoid the storm. Who do they meet? What do they talk about? How do they feel about the storm?

[ A storm has resulted in your character finding themself stuck in a location with others. Who do they encounter? What conversation do they have? And how do they feel about the strong storm rolling through? ]

He had recalled The Amaryllis was a beautiful piece of theater, but this revival had been made all the more entertaining by Xaawo's reactions. She had laughed and gasped and teared up at all the right parts, and he had been looking forward to discussing the twist ending with her after the show when he had heard the riotous patter of torrential rain on the roof of the hall during the bows. Upon exiting, he had grabbed Xaawo's hand and led her a few doors down to an all-night candy shop that his mother had been known to frequent. He doubted any of his family members would be here this late, but he looked around anyway. It would be awkward if he ran into his parents before he was ready to.

"It's a good spot for gifts," he said, trying to catch his breath after the jog over.

An army of caramel apples assaulted her just past the entrance, and Xaawo stopped to examine them, the driving rain just outside masking most of the trivial sounds around them. The sugary designs were intricate and some formed a loose narrative, like actual works of art.

"Do you think I should take up apple design? I imagine carrying around a bunch of fruit would be cumbersome, but I bet people would pay well for novelty food."

He laughed louder than he might have had most of it not been drowned out by the pelting rain.

"Cumbersome, yes. Especially once the sugar is—"

Howth was startled into silence by something quite large and damp smacking into his legs. His first impulse when he saw it was a child was to drop Xaawo's hand and check his sodden pockets to make sure they hadn't been picked, but as soon as he had done so, he felt a chilly wave of shame wash over him. It was just a kid—a little Geian girl no more than seven or eight years old—and she was either genuinely lost or a really good actor.

"Hello there," he said, trying to sound as friendly as possible. "Can we help you?"

Xaawo tensed when Howth let go of her hand, ready to defend from whatever threat he perceived, but when she saw it was a lost child, she perked up. This could be good... practice? It felt like a clumsy sentiment, especially with Howth coming across like they were about to swindle the girl into purchasing an untrained sermal. Xaawo grinned, making an attempt to push away her self-consciousness. She hoped it didn't seem creepy.

The girl looked at them both, a tentative smile meeting their attempts at approachability.

"I... I've lost my dad somewhere in the shops? I didn't cry out because I didn't want anyone to know I was alone."

Well, that was nice. Despite his ineptitude around anyone younger than twenty and Xaawo's resting spear face, they had somehow managed to look like a safe bet to a lost little girl.

"We can certainly help you with that!" he said with a bit too much exuberance. "I'm Howth and this is my g... girlfriend, Xaawo." Flawless. Or if not, at least it was pretty good for the first time he'd said it out loud. Realizing he was no longer holding her hand, Howth reached in the direction he thought Xaawo's hand might be and slowly grabbed at nothing as he continued speaking.

"What does your father look like?"

She watched his hand paw aimlessly through the air for a moment before giving Howth the benefit of her positional advantage and clasping it in hers, twining their fingers and tapping their joined hands against her thigh.

    "Are you from Chiume?"

The question startled Xaawo slightly, drawing her gaze back to the girl's hopeful expression.

"We learned about your island in school." She looked to Howth. "I'm Phei and my dad is probably the same height as you? He's got bluer eyes, no glasses, and he shaves his head 'cuz he's going bald!" She said this with the same amount of vague worry that she'd said everything before this, but there was a touch of wonder there too, like going bald was some magical activity that she didn't quite understand.

    "Okay. Got it."

He rose onto his toes, wincing a little at the squelch of his shoes. It was unbelievably weird to think about an entire group of people being made the subject of study for children, but he supposed it was no different than what historians spent their time doing, just separated by decades.

Howth continued his search for Phei's father, choosing to remain silent on the subject of Chiume.

    "Really? What do they say?"

To her surprise, Xaawo was genuinely curious. It did feel strange to be the unknowing subject of a child's assignment, but Azehra deserved to be revered by everyone who heard of her, even schoolgirls.

A thoughtful expression cut through Phei's concern. "They tell us not to be afraid of you, which I'm not because you seem really nice! They say that some of your cousins were... born from war? But that you came here as explorers."

Howth smiled to himself, squeezing Xaawo's hand. Well, that wasn't so bad. She was an explorer, after all.

Catching sight of a frantic bald man speaking to one of the cashiers in a connected store, Howth pointed. "Is that your dad?"

Phei bobbed back and forth, trying to see over the heads of those around her. "I don't know!"

"Can I lift you?" It was an impulse she was surprised to have, considering how damp they both were, but when the little girl nodded, Xaawo was happy to pick her up, momentarily holding her above all of the people looking for shelter from the rain.

"Yes!" Phei wiggled until Xaawo put her down, then grabbed the hand that Howth wasn't holding to drag Xaawo in her father's direction. "Daddy! Look who I met!"

As soon as they got within earshot of the man he turned, relief visibly washing over him as he thanked the cashier and hurried closer. Phei's father had clearly been out in the storm for even longer than they had.

"Thank you!" He grabbed Howth's hand and shook it. "Thank you so much. If I had lost my girl—"

"That's okay, sir." Howth smiled, resisting the urge to wipe his hand on his trousers. It wasn't like his were any less clammy and moist right now. "We were happy to help."

A very small part of her wanted to duck her head, to try to seem like less of a threat in this city of theater and structure and... shoes... but that part didn't win. If this little girl wasn't wary, perhaps her father wouldn't be as well. Xaawo smiled instead, and sure enough the man grinned back, his expression genuinely grateful.

"Daddy, this is Xaawo and Howth." Phei introduced them in almost the same way that Howth had, though with notably less awkwardness.

"She's usually far more careful around strangers..." This was said with a mildly scolding tone, as if the man didn't want Phei to forget that fact, even though things had worked out this time. "But I'm very glad you were the ones she found. I'm Rolus."

"As are we," Howth said with a nod. As brief as their interaction had been, this encounter had been enlightening, to say the least. "I wish you well, Phei. And it was nice to meet you Rolus, even if it wasn't for long."

"It was very nice to meet you both." Xaawo reached out and touched the girl's shoulder as Phei stepped away to hug her father. She squeezed Howth's hand, a belated answer to his, and he met her attention with a shaky smile.

"I have a candle shop down on Kleos Street," Rolus added. "Stop by if you ever have a need!"

Xaawo nodded, watching them go with a smile in her eyes. What an unexpected way to spend a storm.
