Stuck in a Storm

Solo or RP Format
Counts as 5 RP growth Points
Solo word minimum is 750, RP post minimum is 7

Spring storms can often appear with out little notice and last for days. They are filled with strong winds and heavy rain, which means one must halt their travel if they are able to even get outside during the downpour. Your character has found themself stuck away from home in an area with others seeking to avoid the storm. Who do they meet? What do they talk about? How do they feel about the storm?

[ A storm has resulted in your character finding themself stuck in a location with others. Who do they encounter? What conversation do they have? And how do they feel about the strong storm rolling through? ]

The day had been so gloomy that Mina debated going out at all. When she'd been a hairs breath away from staying in that night word of a smugglers ship making landfall in the port reached her ear and she knew what needed to be done.

Dressed in her 'alter ego's' costume, Mina went out into the fledgling storm with a prayer in her heart. If the seas blessed her then maybe - just maybe - the storm would hold off until she got back. Unfortunately for her they did no such thing. Thunder cracked nearly as loud as her whip when she made contact with the ruffians and her magic lit up the sky in tandem with sparks of lightning. The cloak she'd attempted to keep snug around her head was long since gone and by the time the fight was over the Hapuna - bruised and bleeding - was thoroughly drenched.

She stood on the dock, the mask nearly slipping off her face, as she tried her best to stand. Mina's left arm hung limp at her side, while the other was locked firm on her whip's handle. She needed to get back...knew she had to but....why couldn't her legs move?

Oly had been helping a friend do repairs on their ship when the storm swept in. Hammering boards into place while the ship rocked heavily side to side with the growing waves wasn't easy, but it was better than trying to retrieve a sunken ship later. When the rocking became too much for one of the mates, Oly took up the job of seeing them home safely.

He was hurrying back to the ship after dropping his friend off to make sure the repairs were finished. The sooner the ship was done, the sooner they could take refuge in an actual building! The pouring rain obscured most of his view, and he just barely noticed someone else standing out in the rain. He stopped short as his mind absorbed what he was seeing. Why the heck was someone just standing out here? "Hey. Hey, are you alright?" he yelled over the noise of the weather, heading closer cautiously. Was that.. Mina wouldn't be out here, right?

At first the warrior could barely hear anything over the pounding of her own heart. It beat out a muffled cacophony in her ears, timed only with the lightning around her and the waves slapping up against the docks. She could feel her chest heaving, as if each breath were being dredged up from the seafloor itself, but she couldn't hear it-

-And maybe that was because of the blood loss. A steady pool was forming on her left side, lasting just long enough to be visible before the rain and sea took it away. Her armor was horrendously heavy and she just wanted to lie down, to be rid of it and disappear-

-but then she heard something. Not the words, exactly, but a murmur through the storm. When Mina turned, her mask still half on her face, the Hapuna caught sight of - Oly? Was that Oly? Why was he...here?

All at once her legs gave out from under her and Mina fell to her knees on the decking. Her whip fell out of her hand and the fighter cried out when pain racketed through her.

He tried to peer through the rain for anyone else who might be around, but he was lucky just to see the figure standing not even ten feet away. It wasn't a great idea to approach an unknown during such a downpour, but he couldn't just walk away either without making sure they were alright.

He hurried forward when the figure fell, the sharp cry breaking through the overwhelming sound of the storm. He reached out his hand and stopped short. Armor? That.. that mask! "Hokulua!" he gasped out; the formality of the full title lost in the shock. The name of that mysterious vigilante had echoed in his mind on the regular ever since that single meeting. Seeing her looking so crumpled... was that blood?

"I'm getting you out of this rain. Hold on," he announced. He carefully scooped her up in his arms and turned for the nearest shelter. The clinic was a fair walk away in good weather. Add in the storm.. he needed to see if there was anything he could do first. "What happened?" He pulled her close, resisting the urge to pause and stare at the bit of face exposed by the broken mask. Recognition flickered in his mind...

The jolt of her body hitting the peer caused spots to form in Mina's eyes. Or were they already there? It was so hard to tell, especially when a snap of lightning lit up the world around her in painfully bright light before disappearing all together. Her head listed to the side, snippets of hearing coming in and out through the fog in her mind, but a word...Hokulua? That was her; she needed to move, to get back up but....

Spirits she just couldn't.

All at once she was in his arms and Mina didn't have sense enough to panic. A small part of her mind wanted to fight it, wanted to protect that side of herself she'd kept hidden but relief was just too strong. Looking up at him through her damaged mask, even with the pain of being jostled causing her breath to hitch, Mina couldn't find it in herself to fight.

"Smugglers..." She ground out through gritted teeth. Mina tried speaking again but only succeeded in hissing when her ribs pulled. "More t-th-than I thought..."

Fighting crime in this weather! It had come on rather quickly, but still! Hokulua really was something else. Ah, he didn't have time to be star-struck. He tried to keep his arms steady while still hurrying for shelter. The first building that offered an open door was a stable. Far from ideal, but at least it would give them a moment to see the extent of the damage. "Sorry I wasn't there to help this time," he offered as he set her gently onto a square bale of straw. Not that he'd had any way of knowing! "Stay here and try to clear the wound so we can get a look at it. I'm gonna go see if this place has any health kits and clean blankets. The clinic's a long walk yet and I'd rather be able to see where I'm going if you can hold out. If it looks really bad though.. I'll make sure you get there. I promise."

His mind still prickled with recognition as he stood up to turn, but he wasn't letting it register just yet. The woman was soaked to the bone, face twisted with anguish and half covered still by the mask. He was simply seeing the illusion of wishful thinking, surely!

Mina cautiously adjusted herself atop the bale with a grimace. She had to remind herself to breath through it lest she faint in the middle of all this, but finding any sort of comfort was difficult. Breath and focus, breath and focus, try to follow his instructions...What were his instructions? Stay...here...?

"Wait," Before he could leave she reached out with her good hand and grasped whatever she could. This time it happened to be a piece of his clothing. When she looked up at him she could only see out of one eye hole in the mask; the other had dipped down far enough that she could only see bits out of it. To fix it would mean letting go of Oly and -

She had to. Hokulua had to. With a long sigh, she let him go and nodded. "...I'll clear the area."

Oly stopped short at the tug to his shirt and looked down with concern. Should he just try to carry her on to the clinic? What if he was wasting precious time by trying to judge the injury himself? If anything happened to the warrior under his watch.. "Hey, it's okay." Speaking to reassure both Hokulua and himself, he knelt down once he was free and gingerly reached out to adjust the mask back into place for her. "We'll be real quick. Just need to see how bad it-"

He hadn't meant to see. He just wanted to make sure Hokulua could see what she was doing while protecting her identity. He knew he could e trusted with it, but that was for her to decide. Yet, even without trying, the closer look in the cover of the stable gave him a clear view of a face he recognized.

Oly's hand trembled slightly as it slid to gently cup under the exposed portion of the warrior's jaw. This wasn't a fantasy anymore. This was a real person of flesh and blood. Someone.. precious to him. His voice was barely audible from the shock that had his chest in a vice grip. "Mina?"

No no no no no. Mina closed her eyes and tried to turn away, but the damage was already done. She couldn't move away from him fast enough to stop it, so she stayed still, tears pricking at the corners of her eyes as a crash of thunder shook the stable. When she felt a hand gingerly cupping her chin she tentatively opened her eyes and looked at Oly.

"You weren't supposed to find out." Her words were barely audible over the storm. "Y-you were never supposed to find out... It's safer if you pretend you don't know." What she did night after night...The people she hunted, the connections she made...At any moment it could all come crashing in around her and the less Oly knew the better off he was.

He'll hate you now. He'll run away or get himself killed because of you.

For what felt like ages, Oly could only gawk. Eventually though, he needed to breathe again. He gasped in a gulp of air and stood sharply to take a couple steps back. Mina was Hokulua, and Hokulua was Mina. All this time. The images of the two women battled in his mind; but it was, surprisingly, not a long bridge for his mind to cross. The images fit fairly well together.

That didn't make the reveal any less breathtakingly shocking. Mina's words pulled him back to the present, and his legs turned to jelly so that he had to sit down and stare up at her.

When he finally made his mouth work again, there was a tinge of confused offense taken in his still breathless words. "'Never?' Really?"

"I wanted to tell you, but I..." Seeing him stumble back, eyes wide with the lightning framing his face; spirits it was too much for her heart to take. "I didn't want you to get involved...more than you already are." She added lamely. Mina started to raise and go to him, but the pull on her ribs brought her back to the hay bale. "Hokulua makes the world better but...they don't see it that way and...Oly they came after me tonight. It was a set up and - " Her voice broke and Mina lowered her head.

She'd been terrified - still was, really, - but Mina hadn't stopped. Even when the storm had raged like a god's wrath around her and the water threatened to take her she'd still fought. "Dragging someone else into that...it's selfish. I didn't want to be selfish with you."

How amazing was this?! Mina was a crime fighter! A damned good one! It was like a dream! Well, almost. He couldn't help the hurt on his expression. Of all the things to get caught up on in the moment, it was the thought that Mina had never intended to tell him about this part of her life. After feeling like they'd been getting so much closer... Had he even had a chance with her? Now that he did know, was he going to be pushed away? The question sent a sting through his gut.

A crack of thunder shook the ground, and Oly forced himself to close his eyes. Mina was hurt. From an ambush. This wasn't the time for.. for whatever this was. "You should have let me have the choice," he finally huffed as he pushed himself to his feet. His gaze went to where he had been headed before the reveal. They couldn't wait around here... and he needed time to think. "You should clear the wound. If they know you got away, we should at least wrap you up before we continue going through that storm. I'm sure they'll expect you to hide out in this weather, so that'll give you time to get treated."

Anxious or not, this was the sort of conversation she couldn't focus on in the moment. The longer she stayed on the bale the more apparent it was that the wetness pooling at her side wasn't so much water as it was blood slothing down her arm onto the straw. She didn't want to argue anymore - couldn't, even if she'd wanted to - so the Hapuna settled for lowering her eyes to the ground.

Without Oly she would have died in that storm, and that...was something to think on. Only just barely comprehending his words, Mina nodded and started to take off bits of her armor on the left side. It was hard to get the straps undone, but once she did and the wound was revealed it was easier to put pressure on it.

The scent of the blood was getting disconcertingly stronger. Oly took a steadying breath as he went off on his search, trying to force himself the rest of the way through the mental fuzz. Find the first aid kit. Find a blanket. Get Hoku- Min- Hoku-....Get Mina to the clinic! Hokulua was a figure and Mina was real. Right? Or, what if it was the other way-? Gods, it didn't matter right now!

The stable was thankfully a decent one and had a simple but well stocked medical kit for accidents that often occurred when working with creatures with teeth and claws. A wall of shelves held various supplies that he picked from as well. With his supplies in hand, he took one more deep breath to get himself through what was to come. 'I'll help take care of you for as long as I can. I promise.'
