Stuck in a Storm

Solo or RP Format
Counts as 5 RP growth Points
Solo word minimum is 750, RP post minimum is 7

Spring storms can often appear with out little notice and last for days. They are filled with strong winds and heavy rain, which means one must halt their travel if they are able to even get outside during the downpour. Your character has found themself stuck away from home in an area with others seeking to avoid the storm. Who do they meet? What do they talk about? How do they feel about the storm?

[ A storm has resulted in your character finding themself stuck in a location with others. Who do they encounter? What conversation do they have? And how do they feel about the strong storm rolling through? ]

[ Taliessin 1 ]

The storms of Matori were all but a regular occurrence for those who lived by the sea. Depending on where one lived, they might face the stormy weather in the morning or afternoons, but either way they had the benefit of lovely weather once they were gone.

Except for the typhoons. When the rolling storms came in, everyone buckled down and waited it out, hopefully with minimal damage.

Taliessin was looking outside with a bit of forlorn. She hated being stuck at home in such storms, and found herself bored to death. Sighing, she prayed to the gods that someone might appear to cheer her up.

Orin flipped his soaking hair out of his face and huffed in exasperation as he wrung out his robe on the porch. He didn't much travel to Matori in the summers and he felt like nobody had warned him about how quickly the rain could dump. He had taken shelter on a familiar porch and punched a knock on the door before leaning himself on the doorframe.

It had been a while since he had seen Taliessin. They were close as children; Orin's mother and Taliessin's mother had known each other through their dance hall, but as they grew older they had lost touch. He didn't give any mind as to whether showing up out of the blue would be considered rude.

The knock on the door was almost as if the gods were answering her prayers. A wayward visitor, keen enough to knock on the family side of the hall. Clearly they knew who lived here...otherwise why would they knock? Taliessin perked up with a giggle, her boredom forgotten as she danced toward the door and swung it open without a second thought.

The figure in the doorway, shrouded in the dim light of a rainy day, nearly caught her breath. She was used to attractive individuals, having lived where she did, but that did not stop her from a swift appreciation of the soaking male that was before her.

It took more than a second to begin to recognize just who was before her...and she swallowed back the appreciation and tucked it away for further exploration later.

"Do my eyes deceive me." She teased with a grin. She knew it was Orin, having seen Aeuri a few weeks prior. But where Aeuri had some maturity, Orin was very much full of different sort of masculinity.

She shoved that thought with the other, a smirk crossing her face as she locked it firmly away, "Welcome, weary traveler."

Orin raised a brow, a crooked smirk tugging at his lips like he was in on a joke no one else had heard. “Weary?” he echoed with a scoff, wringing the edge of his sleeve with theatrical disdain as water spattered onto the wooden porch. “Please, Taliessin, I look incredible for someone who was personally assaulted by the sky.”

He took a slow, deliberate glance down at himself—dripping from head to toe, robes clinging unflatteringly in places he refused to acknowledge—and then flicked his gaze back to her with a spark of challenge. “Frankly, I think the storm improved my look. Very brooding traveler. Tragic poet. The gods weep because I’m back in town—something like that.”

His eyes lingered on her just a breath longer than polite—curiosity painted beneath the bravado, the kind of stare that remembered things he hadn’t seen in years but still recognized with ease. Taliessin had always been radiant, but now she wore her confidence like a second skin, and Orin felt a flicker of something he couldn’t name just yet. He tilted his head as if to shake the thought away.

“I almost knocked on the wrong door,” he went on, stepping just inside without waiting for an invitation. His boots squelched unapologetically on the polished floor, and he left a trail of rain behind him like a half-drowned cat with opinions. “Thought about gracing some stranger’s porch with my presence. Let them tell tales about the mysterious, devastatingly handsome man who brought the storm with him.” He paused, turning to meet her eyes again, smugness in full bloom. “But then I remembered—your family has the good tea and the better company.”

He dropped his satchel onto a nearby bench and gave a sharp exhale, as if finally safe from nature’s indifference. Then, with the same mix of mockery and sincerity he always used when teasing her, Orin tilted his head just slightly. “So. Did you miss me?”

[ Taliessin 3 ]

Tragic poet. Dashing traveler. Dangerous pirate if one might have asked. All could be something Orin could pass for, appearing drenched with hair falling just so. Did he pause by a window to adjust, or did he truly roll of the road looking like he does. Gods, some were just blessed, and Taliessin suspected Orin knew that.

She naturally shifted to the side as he entered. A smooth motion from years of dance training. As he continued on, his confidence more than welcome, Taliessin turned to grab a spare blanket for him to dry with.

As she turned back, she caught the smug tone and tossed the blanket in his face, covering up the blush at the accusation.

She didn't miss him, but after seeing him today she would in the future. But gods he'd never know.

"I would ask you the same, but by your own admittance it seems you missed me...and my tea."

The blanket thunked against his face with a satisfying fwump, and Orin made no move to stop it. In fact, he let it hang there for a dramatic beat, hands spread slightly at his sides as if accepting a divine shroud. “Tragic,” he muttered through the fabric. “Betrayed by the very one whose tea I traveled miles to taste.” Then, peeling the blanket off with an exaggerated sigh, he draped it around his shoulders like a cape and turned to her with the lazy swagger of someone who had never once in his life questioned whether he belonged in a room. “You hurt me, Tali,” he said, placing a hand over his heart, “but I’ll recover. I’m very resilient. Comes with being devastatingly memorable.”

He wandered toward the sitting cushions without asking—because of course he wouldn’t—and plopped down with the relaxed confidence of someone reclaiming a throne. “And yes, I did miss you,” he added, almost as an afterthought, pulling a corner of the blanket up to dry his hair. “You and your unprovoked violence. Very comforting.”

He glanced over at her again, this time quieter, less teasing—just for a second. “You look good,” he said, like it was a surprise. Not because he expected otherwise, but because he’d somehow forgotten what it was like to be in a room with her. “Busy, I assume. Still dancing?”

Tali held back a chuckle at how quickly he recovered from her attack, placing her hands on her hips in mock frustration with an expression oh so similar to her mother's. She spent many years working on such a face, giggling with her sister as they turned the stern matriarch into a more loving memory.

The expression dropped into a softer look as she smoothly followed Orin, noting how he seemed to remember the landscape of their home. She was sure that she would so the same if arriving at his doorstep after years. They simply knew.

"Good." She replied to him missing her, a bit of pride in her tone as she joined him on the couch, sitting close enough to note the chill of rain coming off of his clothes but daring not to sit closer...

Raising her brow, "I hope you weren't expecting otherwise." She replied with a flash of a smile that highlighted her dimples. Also practiced well enough to be devastating.

Turning fully, she brushed her hair behind her ears and really studied him.

"Hmm. Playing really. Took up instruments..." she brushed off the direction of their conversation before leaning closer still.

"You look good too." And then a gasp, with a hand darting up to snatch a strand of hair, "You changed too!"

Orin narrowed his eyes slightly when her fingers darted up to his hair, not in irritation, but with the squint of someone realizing they were about to be razzed. “Is this how Matori greets visitors now?” he muttered, though he didn’t move away. “Storm rolls in, and suddenly everyone’s a stylist.” He flashed her a smirk, his eyes revealing his playful intentions. He knew that just like a lot of people, he had changed in looks. Tali though… if anything had changed in her looks, he was too distracted to notice.

He didn’t miss the once-over she’d given him, the way her eyes lingered before returning to her usual sass. And, frankly, he found it unfair. He was the one dripping all over the floor. “For the record,” he added, “this is exactly how I looked before the storm hit. The rain just helped with the dramatic timing.”

His smirk softened for a breath, eyes flicking to the curve of her new hairstyle. “But I like yours better,” he said, casually. “The hair, I mean. It’s bold. Dangerous. Says ‘I have opinions and will ruin you with them if necessary.’” He shrugged one shoulder. “Very you.”

Then, with a quick glance around the room as if trying to reset the mood before it got too sincere, he added, “So, are we doing the whole catching-up-over-tea routine, or are you just going to keep attacking me with kindness until I melt into the floor?”

She let out a little gasp of a word, dropping his hair and shifting away back to where she original was. Taliessin wasn't one to stick to boundaries, she was quite fluid and a bit flirtatious. But with Orin, who she grew up with, it felt a little more than playful flirting. Or maybe it's because he was flirting back.

"Lucky for you, we're in the rainy season...so you can stick around and use that to your advantage to keep with the dramatic look."

And maybe stick around longer than his brother had.

At his comment on her hair, her cheeks warned again and she sent him a smirk.

"Much different than the whole.. long and dainty thing I had as a Youngling." She chirped, flipping her head lightly to flick her hair.

At his final comment, she bit back a quip, settling on the soft retreat....for now.

"Goran has grown up to be a little gardener, and thanks to him we have improved our collection." She said as she hopped up from the seat,

"I think you'll enjoy the improvements."

Walking towards the stove in the other room, she turned to look over her shoulder to eye him once more.

"He takes after dad...but I think you could manage in one of his shirts if you want to get out of those soaked clothes."

Orin watched her retreat with a flicker of something he didn’t name—somewhere between amusement and regret, like he'd just set off a firework too close to home. He didn’t push it. Not yet. Instead, he sank deeper into the cushions, draping the blanket over one shoulder like he had every right to lounge there indefinitely.

“The rainy season,” he repeated, stretching his legs out like he was testing how far he could sprawl before someone would scold him. “Perfect. Gives me just enough time to monopolize your tea, your patience, and possibly your laundry.”

At the mention of Goran, he perked up. “A little gardener, huh? He was barely out of the cradle last time I saw him, and now he’s cultivating an empire of herbs? I’m already intimidated.” He twisted slightly to watch her head toward the stove, lips twitching as she tossed that look over her shoulder.

“Generous offer,” he called after her, tone dry as the heatstones beneath their feet. “But if I wear anything of Goran’s and so much as wrinkle it, I’m pretty sure your mother will appear out of thin air and strike me down where I stand.” He paused, then added with mock gravity, “Which, granted, would be a dramatic end fitting the aesthetic, but I’d hate to die before sampling this famed improved collection.”

Then, more quietly, not wanting to cut the warmth of the moment: “Thanks, Tali. For letting me in. Storm and all.”

She let the conversation linger into a soft warmth as she made the tea, her brain gently pushing and molding the comment he made. That soft tone in the deeper voice, it set in stone that Orin wasn't the troublemaker she grew up with.

He was well grown into adulthood and very much something entirely different. Indeed, something interesting had walked through her door, rain and all.

She made a few trips while the kettle boiled, bringing out what she recalled was his favorite mug. Chipped a little, the glaze worn from small hands, still absolutely perfect.

As the kettle appeared, she sprinkled some warming spices from Oba mixed with a few relaxing herbs, before pouring a steaming cup for each and settling back next to Orin with a sigh.

Orin accepted the mug without a word at first, his fingers brushing hers briefly as he took it, and then curling around the familiar shape like it anchored him. He stared down at it for a moment, turning it slightly in his hands, thumb grazing the chip near the rim.

“You kept this?” he said finally, not looking up yet, voice quiet in a way that didn’t quite fit the grin usually perched on his face. “Gods, I think I stole this from your mother when I was seven. Swore it made the tea taste sweeter.”

He lifted the mug with exaggerated reverence, sniffed the blend, then gave a slow, appreciative nod. “Oban spice. Now I know you missed me. You’re breaking out the good stuff.”

He took a sip and let out the kind of pleased sound that was probably meant to be subtle but absolutely wasn’t. “Still the best tea I’ve had in all of Tendaji. Don’t tell Aeuri I said that. He’ll insist I’m sick or poisoned.”

He glanced sideways at her, that crooked smirk making its slow return. “You know, I didn't expect to be here for long. Just let the rain blow over and be on my way.” He turned the mug in his hands once more, the glaze catching the low light. “But now I’m thinking... maybe the storm doesn't have to decide when I leave.”

His eyes met hers again, just for a breath too long. “Hope your tea supply’s well-stocked.”

She took a slow sip of the tea, letting the scent drift through her senses and blend in with the taste. A slow sip of tea to warm the chill away was nice, but sharing it with fine company made her feel much warmer. She glanced over to watch Orin examine the mug, her voice just as soft with the response.

"We knew you'd come back eventually...and with how much you insisted...I couldn't let anyone toss it."

Maybe it was a secret hope she held on to, truly to ensure he'd return and they'd fall back into their old routines.

Her fingers tapped lightly on her mug, before she took a deeper drink as she listened to his complements and jokes. She had picked this out carefully, with him in mind, and she felt herself preen under the recognition and appreciation of such thought.

She set her own mug down on the small table in front of them, turning in time to catch that smirk that reminded her that Orin was very much not the little boy who played chase in their garden. At his words, she took in a soft breath as her eyes simmered with delight.

As their eyes caught, held, she raised her chin lightly with the confidence she had developed for years training at this hall.

"I can assure you that we have enough tea to keep you here for years...and I will throw mysome company at no charge." She said with a saucy wink.

With easy movements, she brushed her fingers over his own before gently taking and setting his mug next to hers. Turning, she leaned back on the couch, her shoulder and side now snug against his sturdy form, and her fingers found his own to thread together.

"I'm really glad you're here, Orin." She said softly, almost a whisper of her own, " I've misses you."

And with that she laid her head against his shoulder, a gesture reminiscing of childhood. But the feel of his long fingers intertwined with her, his tall and sturdy form lined against her own petite size, assured her that this was a much different situation.

Taliessin was not shy, and she hoped Orin would stick around as promised.
