Nedelle cocked her head to the side, eyeballing the small group that she had gathered with her. There were the usuals - Issan, Lialle, Brexin - some faces she didn’t see too often, and then Mirin. The newest family member to the circus squad.

The shifter girl had come down looking for something to attach herself to with her sailscales in tow and Nedelle hoped that she thought she had found something worth staying for.

She shot Mirin a quick friendly smile and brought her attention back to the group. ”Okay, I think we all know why we’re here.” Her smile turned devious and she lowered her head, looking out at the dimly lit room through her brows. ”Time to play a game.”

Mirin had been mid chatter with one of the other circus folk before she looked across the circle and met Nedelle’s eyes. A smile that she returned in kind before she heard Nedelle’s voice and cocked a head.

She had joined the group tonight just to be a little more social, get to know some of the others better, and to feel like she belonged a little more. She was still new, still unsure of her place in the crowd, and while she was practicing and working her tail off to make sure she didn’t disappoint she was also tired of feeling lonely.

She had been in the circus for just a month now but she did miss her brothers back home and wanted the same feeling of camaraderie she had left in Jauhar.

”A game?” Mirin furrowed her brows. “What kind of game?” She asked the hybrid woman across from her. She couldn’t quite make out what the devious grin signified, but she could feel a tightening in her stomach. She felt like she was going to have to prove herself as one of the group tonight and was already feeling a twinge of anxiety.

Nedelle’s grin widened as she leaned forward on her elbows, letting the flickering candlelight cast playful shadows across her face. “Truth or dare,” she purred, letting the words hang in the air with just the right amount of theatrical suspense.

She had played this game countless times before, and it never failed to unearth something interesting about the people around her. But tonight, she was especially curious about Mirin—the girl who seemed so sure of herself yet so desperate to belong.

Mirin felt a prickle of nerves creep up her spine, but she refused to let it show. She folded her arms and let out a scoff, feigning disinterest even though her fingers twitched where they rested against her bicep.

“That’s it? Thought you were about to challenge us to something actually dangerous.” Her smirk was sharp, but she could feel the weight of Nedelle’s gaze. She was starting to realize just how much the other woman stood out, not just in looks, but in presence.

“Oh, don’t worry,” Nedelle teased, reclining against a pile of cushions with the confidence of someone who thrived in the spotlight. “Truth or dare can be plenty dangerous in the right hands.” She swept a knowing glance across the group before landing back on Mirin.

“Why don’t you go first?”

Mirin flicked her eyes around the circle, gauging the expressions of the others before settling back on Nedelle. She wasn’t about to let herself be put on the spot without a fight.

“Fine,” she said with a shrug, feigning nonchalance. “I’ll play. Dare.”

She knew going with a dare first would set a tone—she wasn’t scared. And she sure as hell wasn’t going to let Nedelle think she was.

Nedelle’s eyes gleamed with mischief, and she tapped a finger against her chin as if pondering the most devious challenge she could muster. But she wasn’t interested in humiliating Mirin—no, she wanted to see what made her tick.

“Alright, Mirin. I dare you to let me do your makeup.” She grinned, gauging the reactions around the circle. “Full performance style. You have to sit there and let me turn you into a Cirque Sirene masterpiece.”

Mirin blinked.

That wasn’t what she had been expecting. She had braced herself for something reckless or embarrassing, but this? This was almost worse. Her first instinct was to balk, to refuse outright—but the challenge in Nedelle’s eyes made her hesitate. If she said no, she’d look weak. Like she cared too much. So instead, she rolled her shoulders and forced out a laugh. “Fine. But if I end up looking like a clown, I’m getting revenge.”

Nedelle beamed, already reaching for the small tin of pigments she always carried. “Oh, trust me,” she said, scooting closer, “you’re going to look like a star.”

She cupped Mirin’s chin lightly, tilting her face toward the light. The moment their skin touched, a strange tension coiled in Nedelle’s chest. She ignored it, focusing instead on the brush in her hand.

Mirin swallowed, suddenly aware of how close Nedelle was. The hybrid’s fingers were cool against her skin, and she found herself staring at the way her lavender hair caught the candlelight. She was just playing along, just proving she could take a dare like anyone else—so why did her heartbeat feel too loud?

Nedelle worked in silence for a few moments, her hands deft and practiced as she traced shimmering lines across Mirin’s cheekbones. “You’ve got good bone structure,” she mused, half to herself. “I could see you doing aerial work.”

Mirin scoffed, trying to ignore the warmth creeping up her neck. “I think I’ll stick to the ground. Less chance of breaking my neck.”

Nedelle chuckled, stepping back slightly to admire her work. “Maybe, but you’d look good doing it.” She met Mirin’s gaze, and for a moment, the room felt smaller, the space between them charged with something unspoken.

Mirin’s breath hitched, just for a second. Then she forced herself to smirk. “Alright, my turn.” She squared her shoulders, willing the moment away. “Nedelle, truth or dare?”
