Perhaps today had not been the best day for a long winded hunt. The sky had turned as black as midnight and as a ranger he didn't like to admit that he was intimidated but this storm made him want to go and hide under a rock.
He stopped his mount and turned to Kechiri who was riding up regally behind him. "Maybe we should get back to Vhallas..I don't like the look of this storm." His hair was trying to stand on end...that meant something, he didn't want to examine what too much at this point.
He inhaled and could already smell rain on the wind, a harbinger of wet as it were. "Time to turn back love of mine, I'm getting a really bad feeling about the clouds over yonder." He hadn't felt like this well, since he had got stuck in a storm right after loosing his family. The flashback was not comfortable. He shook his head trying to clear it. Aye it was definitely time to hightail it back to somewhere..covered.

She too was not one to admit defeat but it was the sign of a good leader to know when she was beaten and she trusted her mates word with her life or she would have never entrusted him with a child. Raolvar was a protector and as a woman who danced often on the edge of a knife blade to a rollicking seaman's jig she needed all the insurance she could get. Not that her foot would slip but some lily livered weenie might just trip her. That would be unforgivable.
She took a long hard look at the night storm dark sky.. though it was not late enough in day to be this dark.
"Aye, I reckon you are right." She grinned at him and turned her beast. "Race you home my love, though I dont think we will breach the front gate before the storm front hits."
She cued a fast escape and her janarim reared and brought heavy feet down to start pounding the ground in a gallop.

He raced after her on his radaku, thunder started to pound over the ocean, the storm was forming a front and starting to roil rather angrily. No they wouldn't be making it very far before this hit. He started to think of shelter that was perhaps less comfortable but much more immediate. He took a deep breath and shouted at her.
"Head for the great tree, its bole should keep us all sheltered."
The great tree was an ancient old monster with a hollowed core at the base big enough for them all to fit in and sheltered enough that the storm shouldn't affect them too much, more importantly it was half the distance to home. They would be wet he was sure by the time they got there, the rain wouldn't hold out much longer. But it would be safe. Vhallas at home was safe, he would not come for them, he knew they would be okay...Raol prayed. He didn't think his son would come but well, considering who they, his parents, were...well he hoped the boy was smarter than they were. But doing risky things was adult business, they had experience and they knew the consequences.

Bless the gods but they reached the great tree, it wasn't an Jauharan giant but well it did pretty well for the climate it lived in. They dismounted and took the beasts' saddles off just as the storm got fifteen percent more violent. They ushered the beasts inside and took their tack in and stuffed it in a corner.
They had...space, not too much of it with a janarim in there who kept looking at the sides of the tree bole questioningly as if confused that this was neither cave nor barn but both. Kechiri smiled and patted his leg. "Lucky we didn't have two of you eh? Id be sleeping on you and you would roll eh, not fun." She came to stand with Raolvar, he was so beautiful. She admired his straight backed stance and the serious look on his face which she usually delighted in wiping of it with her nonsense. For now though there was no where to run and hide and giggle from him so she just wrapped her arms around him from behind and leaned her forhead into his shoulder blades. "Good this this is here, I'm glad we thought of it." She looked at the storm outside that was now ripping leaves that were not properly attached off of trees. "Riding home in that would have been...unpleasant."

He turned slightly to her and wrapped an arm around her, tucking her into his side. "Aye, much better to be in here with you then out there fighting with that mess." He grinned. "Now, I know we don't have much supplies but what say we try to make a meal out of our hunting rations." They chewed jerky and nibbled on trail mix. It lacked pizazz, he was rather afraid they were both spoiled food wise, she fished and they both hunted, Vhallas gathered so they rarely had such poor fare, however it filled the hole. Besides the company and view was rather choice.
"I'm not even sad that this happened. We were due for a bit of a vacation." He quirked a brow at her. "All of that running around you know, hard to carve out time for ourselves...Vhallas is growing into a fine young man and soon will be able to be on his own without our assistance, I'm not sure how I feel about that..he does still have your face..has Viltre said anything about anyone coming after you?" It had been years but one always worried about these things.

She grinned at him, he would make the best out of quicksand if that had been their fate. She loved that about Rao, that sunshine and silver was very attractive to a woman like her. She didn't always have to be the man, she could lean on and rely on him and he would raise both of their moods if given the chance. She curled her hand around his, squeezed him tight with the other arm and laid her head against his chest. This was her happy place, no matter where they were geographically.
"It doesn't appear like this is one of those tiddly little showers." She was not sad about being stuck here. They had eaten, now they were just living in the moment. Vhal was safe, she was happy, she had Rao, what else could she ask for?
Her janarim nudged her. "Oh yes.." She turned, "If you want to hunt in that, I won't stop you but do remember where we are hidden please." She patted the beast and sent him off.

He moved over slightly to let the janarin past him. The big beast would likely come back steaming with prey in his maw, proud of the catch. "If you want to go, you can." He told his radaku who wagged his tail and trailed off after to aid in the hunt.
"Well, love of my life, we are alone and trapped, what could we possibly get up to?" He swung her down in his arms and planted a sizzling kiss on her lips and then whispered against them. "I am so cold, you should warm me up." He purred.
There that ought to set certain enjoyable things in motion. He grinned against her lips. He was awful and he knew it, he also knew that she loved that about him and used it to his advantage when he could. "Kechiri..."
The fire crackled merrily, they always had flint and tinder with them wrapped in oilskin and there had been enough dry scraps in the hollow to start the blaze. Otherwise this would have been a sad cold night. At least they could roast some of the meat the critters brought back, it would be better than dry rations.

Well now that he mentioned it, she was rather, er, bored at the moment. "I hear you, keep talking.." She fluttered her eyes as if charmed immeasurably. Well he was very charming no matter if he was flirting shamelessly or not. She was all for it and it would keep them warm and content until their critters came back with food for all. That was the perk of having predatory pets, depending on the size of prey they brought back, the two worked pretty well together anyway, kind of like her and Rao.
About an hour later they lay together in their emergency blanket to the sounds of the beasts feasting on a large catch outside that they had dragged back to the tree. At some point they would have to go harvest meat but...she snuggled down deeper into the warmth and safety of her mates company..not yet. This was her happy place and all the better for the adventure and excitement that they had taken to get here. Their lives had blessedly gone a bit stagnant after the birth of their son but there were always moments to remind her of the life they would lead once again once Vhallas was older.

Well it looked as though a certain someone was more interested in cuddles and warmth than salvaging some meat from outside.
"What a savage pirate warrior you are." He teased. "Alas, I must go if you will not." He smooched her. "Keep the blanket warm for me." He tucked it around her after he had extricated himself from her arms. "MEAT WOMAN." He said and then disappeared with the hunting knife into the storm. It was wet it was awful but he wanted fresh protein. The janarim and radaku let him at the carcass, they were after the organ meat anyway to begin with, that was rich in nutrients and a delicacy for critters. He skinned a patch or two of shoulder blade and used the knife to strip flesh from bone in large steaks. "Perfect." He skewered these on sticks after a quick rinse and set them to cook over the campfire. This was starting to cozy up just fine. It was the beauty of the ranger lifesyle, beauty and thriving in nearly any crappy situation.

"Hmmm...?" She could hear and more importantly smell the meat sizzling on the spit. "A successful hunt then my love? I am kind of glad we came out on the stormy day..we haven't had proper alone time like this in a long time..so long." She let her joy and vivre enter her voice. He always took such good care of her.
She flicked the blanket back so he could dry off and warm back up. She wrapped her arms around him and let her body heat seep into his. She felt his shoulders relax and smiled in bliss against his back. "Call it what you will but it sure feels like a vacation to me, I will take what I can get." She squeezed him gently and promptly fell back into a near sleep stupor. She felt him move to turn the meat on the spit and she listened to the sound of the rain and feasting outside. All was well, her heart was at peace, the storm and its rage had been a most wonderful thing. She hummed and drifted out of consciousness, one of the few easy sleeps she had had in the last two weeks, it felt magical, she had missed travel and camping so much. They would have to do more of this.

He checked the meat and found it to be just edible, the way she liked it. He poked her awake and waved the rare steak in front of her pert little snoot. "Wakey wakey, steaky steaky." He grinned as her yellow cats eyes opened and locked on the food he held for her. She reached out and sat up to nibble. He smiled and allowed his too cook to medium rare. At least neither of them liked it well done. People like that might as well eat a deck of card as a fine steak in his not so humble opinion but he couldn't eat it quite as rare as she did. He wondered if she hadn't taken some of the animal aspect of her menagerie of predatory critters or if it was a thing that just ran in beast taming bloodlines. It mattered not to him.
"The storm will not let up tonight I don't mind either, it does feel like a vacation, maybe it will stay for a while and keep us company. The critters don't seem to mind and that is enough meat out there for a while." He would smoke some for later after they ate their meal. "I'm glad this happened too."

She wiped her face after finishing the sizable steak. "I'm so glad we didn't chose a vegetarian lifestyle, foraging out in that would be unfortunate." She kissed the dimple that always came with her favorite smile. "I am glad too, we were overdo for some real fun, perhaps way too overdue, but who could blame us, parenting kept us pretty busy up unto this point but it has opened my eyes to what we have been missing too." She twirled a lock of his hair around her finger and gave him a self satisfied cat in the cream look. "Aye, the storm might just have been the best thing to happen to us all year." She tugged him closer and kissed him. "Thank you...for the food." She giggled and took a bite out of his steak that he had forgotten about for a minute. Never leave your food ungarded around her she was too much of a prankster. At least she didn't take a huge bite like Vhallas would have. She sniggered at the consternation on his face. "Oh come on you can't still be hungry after that!" She giggled and waved a hand at him.

He wisely held the steak out of her reach now. A bite was enough proof to him that she was still full of fiestiness. So be it. "Ah ah no more for you, you had yours I was careful they were the same size Kech." He frowned disapproving at the self satisfied look on her face. "Quite unfair, you don't even like medium rare all that much," but he knew that she would eat it given the opportunity. "I'll tell our son that you were not being fair." He teased. "He will take my side no doubt about it." He snickered. He knew his son was a chip off his Mother's block and that he was the swing vote in family decisions which meant he would take whichever side he wanted, whatever made the most sense to him, just like his mother and not unlike him, thought his moral compass seemed a bit straighter.
He rolled his eyes and then offered her another bite, "You are right. I'm not that hungry." He ate the rest after her though, it was still delicious and he had lied, he was hungry. But not so much that he couldn't share.

"Liar," She sneered playfully, pulling a treat of chocolate out from her pocket. "Here, this is how much I love you, I only had the one, but would would a pirate queen be without her king." She popped the treat and watched him chew. "There, me debt has been repaid, now back to worship." She snorted and dragged him not off to smoke meat but to the bedroll. She was ..tired..yes..tired and they would need their rest for the next day, if they needed more meat the critters could hunt again, they understood their assignment well and darn her if he was going to go out and get soaking wet again in that rain, next he would be nursing a cold and she would be nursing him. She needed his other skills at the moment and they were to make the most of this delay, however convenient it may be. "Come my love, dreamland beckons us both." She smiled evilly at him. She knew he was conniving and manipulative, but it was for excellent cause. They had been so repressed for so long and there was nothing they could do for their situation. So she dragged him to bed and they did not stir until the sky lightened marginally with the light of day again. The storm continued to rage for two more days and it was arguably the best time of her life and his she was sure.
