Devereux passively gave the sweet wine in his goblet a few lazy swirls before taking a drink. The wedding was going off as pleasantly as anyone could have hoped, and although the hybrid still felt bitterness about the ordeal even he had to admit he wasn’t having a terrible time. The venue was gorgeous, with no expense spared and every luxury that could have been afforded granted to the pair. It was much less a ‘gift’ to the new couple as it was a reflection on their families so despite its opulence Devereux knew it for what it was; a gilded cage. Spectacular, grand, decadent, but instead of manacles he now had a nice little ring clasped around his finger.
At least they had been left alone for the reception. While the bride and groom were expected to greet guests as they came to congratulate them Devereux was pleased to have a few moments where he didn’t have to fake a smile or gush lovingly over a woman he barely knew.
Speaking of which, he turned his eye toward his wife and motioned to the glass of wine that had been poured for her. “It’s not bad if you like sweet things.”
