The streets were full of vigor and excitement. A small festival of harvest was being played out in a small village close to the seaport. Neryssa found herself performing before those to help bring some entertainment to the masses as they ate and drank their fill. As she ended one of her dances she stepped down from the stage and towards where a bunch of the children were playing. She was going to pass them up, but one got her attention.

‘Hey, hey miss.’ the child shouted, waving their arms. ‘Want to play a game with us?’

Neryssa stopped a moment and looked at the child in surprise, were they wanting her to play with them? While she looked young, she was still an adult, was it truly alright? Shouldn’t it have been a case of stranger danger? Still she looked around at the adults who were still drinking.

”You sure that will be ok with your parents?” She asked, unsure as to what might happen.

‘I don’t think they would mind. It’s just a small game of Truth or Dare.’ the child smiled eagerly. ‘We’ve already dared or truthed everything we can out of each other.’ the child said as the rest nodded.

”Um… Alright… I’ll play.” She was still unsure about all this, but the game seemed harmless enough. Even if she chose truth, she didn’t have to give them the full truth… Right? ”So are there any rules to this game?”

The children seem to grow excited as someone else joined their game. They all looked at each other as one stepped forward to explain everything to Neryssa. ‘There aren’t really any rules, just to have fun.’

”Alright…” There was unease in her voice, but she was willing to entertain the kids. ”So who’s going to ask?”

The child who had spoken up first pipped up, ‘Truth or Dare.’ was all that was said, leaving Neryssa to pick her poison as it were.

”Um… How about Truth.” She chose, thinking that it would be the easiest and less painful to do. That and she had little to hide, or so she would think.

‘Truth! She picked Truth.’ The children shouted as some looked on, waiting to hear what was going to be asked and the answer that would follow. ‘Hmmm… Do you… Do you have anyone that you love more than anything?’ the child asked.

This caused Neryssa to blink in surprise, was that all that was to be asked? While she didn’t have anyone outside her family that she loved. Really she hadn’t thought of finding someone to become her partner. Pondering the question over, she looked at the other adults.

”Well, there is my family that I love more than anything.” She answered, that seemed to make some of the kids frown.

‘Is that all? No one else that is more special?’

”I… Haven’t really looked for someone or anyone else.” Neryssa answered, though inside she now felt like she was lacking something. Perhaps she should try and find someone to spend the rest of her life with?

‘That’s it?’ There was disappointment in the kid’s voice as they looked towards the rest who were just as sad looking. ‘We were hoping to hear about some grand story of love.’
”Sorry, I haven’t really gotten out there to look for someone to be my partner. I was so focused on my own dancing and the thoughts of family. Guess I forgot what else there was around me.” Neryssa said a bit crestfallen. ”But cheer up, someday you all will find your own special someones.”

The children just stared at each other and then back to Neryssa, there were looks of disgust on their faces this time. It would seem that the thoughts of finding someone to love themselves wasn’t in their futures. Shaking her head, Neryssa looked towards another part of the festival.

”Come on, looks like they are going to start the maypole dance.” She held out her hand to the closest of the kids. ”No need to worry about finding love, really I never worry about it either.” Though at this time she did have a little seed of worry in her mind. Was she to forever be alone? Or was there someone out there for someone like her.
