ilistohpost oneHe had never felt such warm rain. It was like taking a shower, but instead of a private luxury, he was out in the open with all of his clothing on. He wouldn't have minded if he had been strolling around out here by himself, but he'd recently gotten his hands on a number of reportedly rare books, and he didn't want them ruined before he got them to the appraiser.
So, he ran.
Having only been in town for three days, he had no idea where he might find cover, and between that and the darkness around him, Ilistoh headed toward the only beacon close enough to see—the light in the covered alley just ahead.
He bent at the waist and braced his palms on his thighs under the flickering warmth of a large brazier, trying to catch his breath as he searched for a spot on his pants dry enough to wipe his hands.

kauffpost oneFor a bodyguard job, this one was kind of boring. Kauff was used to being on high alert, sticking close to those who had hired him, but tonight he was just standing around in an alley, no matter how fancy. He was technically posted at the outer door of an opulent gathering, his sole purpose to intimidate party crashers before they ever reached the bouncer inside. He supposed he was also there to forcibly remove those who were brave enough to pass him but still not on the guest list, but there hadn't been any of those.
He stood taller and rested a hand on his hammer as someone spilled into the end of the alley. Whoever it was had been completely drenched and was clearly looking for a spot to wait out the storm. Kauff took his time approaching, watching the kid brush off his clothes and mutter to himself before he interrupted.
"Hey. Private party."

ilistohpost two"Ah!" The noise Ilistoh made was a cross between a yelp and a bark, his wet hair flinging out an arc of droplets as he stood straight and spun around. A wind man was only a few feet away, his stance relaxed despite the menacing weapon.
"Oh, hi! Hey! I'm not looking to attend, I just needed a place to dry off for a bit? I got these books at the sale of the Keiben estate, and I was trying to keep them from getting wet. Could I stay here for a second? A minute at most?" He put on his best pleading face, eyes darting past the man to the ornate door at the end of the alley. It seemed this private party was very fancy.
"I'm Ilistoh. It's nice to meet you."

kauffpost twoIf he had been asked at the start of the night if he thought a kid and his load of books would scramble into an alley he was guarding, Kauff would have said absolutely not. But here he was. Ilistoh, the wind... shifter? Maybe? Not that it mattered. Kauff just had a soft spot for hybrid kids.
"Kauff." His smile wasn't as broad as it would have been if he was off duty, but it was warm enough. "You can stick around for a little while if you stay where no one can see you and keep quiet when guests come through." Kauff gestured to a sturdy crate behind a heap of boxes. "This might be a good spot."

ilistohpost threeHe hurried over to where he had been directed just in time to be missed by a couple of Oban men rushing into the alley. They were wearing more layers than Ilistoh had ever seen anyone willingly put on, and all of them looked slightly damp.
"Sir!" Ilistoh peeked between the boxes in front of him as the taller of the men removed his coat and held it out a little, as if suggesting that Kauff take it from him.

kauffpost three"The coat check is inside. So's the guest list." It wasn't his job to check it—that was for the venue's manager to handle. All he'd been hired to do was eject the people who weren't on it. Kauff ignored the proffered outerwear, pulling open the door and leading the men inside instead. As impressive as the change in atmosphere was from the street to the alley, the glamour doubled between the alley and here.
Heavy blue curtains hung on all sides of the foyer, dampening any sound from farther inside. Bital, a middle-aged fire woman, stood behind an ornate wooden podium, brightening considerably when she heard the door open.
"Let me know if you need my assistance," Kauff said to her, slipping back outside.

ilistohpost fourHe couldn't see much of the inside of the place when Kauff pulled the door open, but what Ilistoh did see left him vowing to attend a gathering like this someday. He waited patiently for the guard to reemerge, catching another glimpse of the foyer when he stepped out.
"That's amazing!" he whispered. "I can't even imagine what's past the curtains. They really don't let you in there?"

kauffpost four"Nope." Kauff took up his position in front of the door he was meant to guard, peering out into the dark. He knew it was still raining beyond the alley, but he could no longer see it. "But I really don't want to go in anyway. It's hard for me to care about some noble's party past what I'm being paid to care about." They had caused so much trouble over the years that Kauff couldn't help but feel bitter. He closed his eyes and sighed.
"Sorry. Past... stuff. If you want to go to a party, you should. Don't listen to me."

ilistohpost fiveThings went quiet for long enough that Ilistoh wondered if Kauff had slipped away and he was alone. He stood cautiously, sitting once more when he saw the man still silently standing by, his expression inscrutable.
Perhaps he should change the subject. He knew nearly nothing about the war, but of course it would be a big deal for someone who had lived through it. He supposed he couldn't have known that was where this conversation would go, but with a little more research he could have responded with something other than silence. Silence and...
"So... what's it like living here?"
Smooth.

kauffpost fiveHe peeked at the boxes where the trader hid, a smirk creeping back onto his lips.
"It's a lot of fun. Sunny most of the time, not like this. But I do miss where I lived as a kid sometimes. My wife and the twins more than make up for it any time I feel too mopey, though. Or we just... up and go to Sauti for a visit." He shrugged a little. Now that the kids were older, it wasn't such a pain to go on a little trip every once in a while. "Traveling has always been in my blood, you know?" Kauff had a feeling this kid of all people shared that sentiment.

ilistohpost six"Sauti? Yeah, that's where I'm from!" Ilistoh supposed there was close to a fifty percent chance that he hailed from that settlement, but he pushed aside the resulting moment of embarrassment and continued on without another thought.
"Until a few years ago, I'd never left Tinerr. Both my parents, well, they have certain challenges with getting around and I didn't feel okay with leaving them alone until recently."
He couldn't pinpoint what had pushed him from home when nothing had changed, but he was thankful for it.

kauffpost sixKauff nodded. "I was raised all over the wastes, though we sheltered in a city when it was pouring like this." He chuckled. "Tinerr was always fun whenever we visited, but the longer we stayed there, the more I felt like an idiot. I think one of my aunts settled there eventually?"

ilistohpost sevenIlistoh perked up at that. "Really? What's her name?" He didn't mean to imply that all windfolk knew each other or anything, but a surprisingly large number of them had passed through his house over the years, at least in his estimation. If Kauff's aunt had stopped by more than once, there was a decent chance he would remember her.

kauffpost seven"Oh... um..." Kauff wasn't sure how he felt about digging up family s**t right now, but if the kid was really curious... "Her name's—"
A laugh echoed down the alley as a pair of fire earthlings appeared at its end. Kauff stood tall, pressing his lips together in an effort to look more stern. He shot a quick glance at Ilistoh, willing him to stay quiet for now. They would continue this conversation later.
