Swimming lessons had drifted into dinner and games. That was fine with Nate. He enjoyed being around the boisterous Jacobs, they reminded him so much of his own family back in the UK. It was amusing to watch people mill about, floating in and out of the multiple games that were on going. Everything from Candyland to cards and video games. Littles were running round, screeching as only kids could. Life practically throbbing through the basement space.
The young man had excused himself from the card game he had been in, to fetch some water. “Would anyone else like something to drink?” He asked the room in general and wasn’t surprised when there were several requests. Already wondering just how he was going to provide all the refreshments Nate left the gameroom to make his way to the kitchen. With luck there would be a tray or something he could use to carry everything.

Xander shook his head and detached himself from Yatora’s back before following Nate, because he wasn't going to be able to get all the drinks he’d just offered to bring. “I was so warm,” he chuckled before heading up the stairs.
“Nate,” he called as he headed up the stairs, “let me help you. There is a small basket in the living room. I really should have checked the mini fridge this morning.”
He wasn’t sure if Nate heard him or not so headed to the living room to grab the basket first before heading to the kitchen. They need a few more waters, a few beers, a couple sodas, a wine cooler or so.

“Sure!” Nate replied to the first part where Xander offered to help, he hadn’t caught the second half about the basket or the mini fridge so when the older redhead showed up in the kitchen with a basket he was a bit surprised. “Oh, that works much better than the bag or cookie tray I was going to find.”
It didn’t take all that long to gather the various drinks but Nate still paused, “Do you think there are enough snacks downstairs?” He wondered if it was worth collecting anything else before heading back to the gameroom. The young man drifted over to the pantry and went to peek inside. Was there anything there that wasn’t already downstairs?

The basket was filled with drinks and honestly there wasn’t much more room for snack. Xander shook his head, “there’s plenty downstairs, don’t worry about it. We are going to order pizza anyway, so no need to add more snacks.” Xander chuckled and turned to head back downstairs, relaxed and happy.
“Come on Nate, the games won’t wait for us. Let’s see if your any better at Mario Kart than I am.” Xander was never much of a gamer and it was a toss in the air whether today would be a lucky day or if he’d be pants every round.”
“Think I should get cheesy bread with the pizza?”

“Ok,” The younger man grabbed his collection of drinks, leaving any additional snacks behind, and headed towards Xander. “I don’t know about Mario Kart but I can play a mean round in Mortal Kombat.” He was still much more likely to be trounced by others, or at least his siblings, but he could hold his own. As long as the newer versions of the game still retained the original button combos. “And yes. Always get cheesy bread. Even if it doesn’t get devoured by the hoard downstairs, the leftovers are useful for other things too.”
As Nate followed Xander he couldn’t help but pause and asked his ‘father-in-law’ a question that he had been wondering for a bit, “Xander how do you keep the romance alive in your relationship? I mean, between work and the kids and everything,” Generally meaning life but also encompassing being a knight. “How do you do it?” And was there anything he could take to apply to his own rather confusing romantic life? Not that he said that last part out loud. Something should never be said to one’s Significant Other’s parents.

Xander chuckled at the cheesy bread comment, certain with all others that it would indeed be devoured. They had multiple toddlers who would be trying to get their little hands into everything, especially cheesy bread. “I doubt there will be any leftovers today. Everyone is here but Lily and Eli.”
Of course they hadnt expected them with a new baby and all, but Rose had scooped up Colin, not wanting him to miss out on his swim lessons and time with his cousins, but also wanting to give Lily and Eli a bit of a break.
Xander paused at the question Nate asked him and honestly he didn’t feel he did much of anything. Mostly had learned one thing from his time with Cerise before he ever even met Ai. “I listen to them and we all compromise and make it work together. But listening is a big one to just know when they need or want something from me.”
“Honestly I dont think I'm the best person to ask that question.”

“But why?” Nate was honestly curious as to why Xander didn’t feel like he was the best person to ask about keeping a relationship healthy. “I mean, you seem to do it all and everything. So why not ask you?”
As for his advice, the young man mentally stored it away. It pretty much boiled down to the same information that Rose gave him. ‘Talk to Dessie.’ She had given him a few more guidelines but it all pretty much revolved around talking to Dessie and getting things sorted that way. He mentally sighed, he knew it would take work but still… a little short cut or hint couldn't have hurt could it?

“Because I was a social recluse for years … I didn't have a single friend until I was in my late 20’s and barely noticed people. I’m still learning and outside of my relationship with my siblings, I haven't got the headstart most people get from their early life, so to speak.”
He was flawed and wholly willing and able to admit it. He had a single minded focus on school and now as far as his relationship went, Ai and Ya were just his best matches, or that was how he felt. He was still learning how to navigate relationships and he wasn't perfect at it. He was still sometimes too work driven and prone to inattention, but he’d gotten better.
If he was honest, if he hadn't met Ai, he would probably be a bit more free where romance was concerned. He liked a bit of everything and the people he never noticed before were more fascinating than he realized. He was always intrigued.
“Only other thing I can think of is making sure your actions and words match up. Don’t say one thing and do another because actions are loud especially when your actions say something different than your words.”

“Really?” Nate looked at Xander, really quite surprised that the man was a self admitted social recluse. Even Nate had some friends when he was in school and even now, though not many. “I guess you just seem so much more balanced with everything. A lot better in your home and work life stuff then most people I’ve seen.” He shrugged and continued towards the basement steps.
If Xander really had gotten over such problems then Nate should be able to as well. It wasn’t exactly the easiest task but it was something he was determined to get right. For Dessie, he would do anything to make her happy. “‘Actions speak louder than words.’ Gotcha. I’ll make sure to keep that in mind and I’ll make sure to talk to Dessie.”

Xander laughed and nodded, “I will take the compliment though. I'm certainly proud of the growth.” It was nice to here and certainly added a layer of confidence to his ever growing confidence. It was like someone telling him he was doing a good job and not realizing it was nice to hear sometimes.
He followed along behind Nate, hoping things worked out for the guy. He was a good one and his daughter deserved the whole world as far as he was concerned. He honestly hadn't imagined walking her down the aisle in the past, but now, yeah it was a nice thought. Maybe, one day.
