The youma snarled as it circled a tall, dark-haired woman in armor, its long, scorpion-like tail lashing in anger. Tanais snarled back at it, clenching her bare fists as she held them up before her. Blood ran down the side of her face from a cut across her cheekbone and from various other slashes peppering her biceps and thighs. They stung, and the fact that she had them at all was what had her annoyed.
Tanais, a knight of mars no less, was getting the run around by a youma. A youma! Red eyes glared at the tiger-shaped thing with spines sprouting all over its body, watching it as it worked itself up to leap at her again. It was missing some of those spikes, care of the mars knight, but it wasn't nearly enough. Whatever was going on, it had made her magic, and her weapon, hard to control and unreliable. Which meant that annoyances like this, when any other time she'd have bashed them into pieces.
Before it could leap at her, Tanais took the initiative and lunged at it instead, smashing a bare fist into its toothy face. Bone and armor crunched under her hand and she spun to kick it, nearly lifting it off it clawed feet as her boot found its midsection. It shrieked in pain as it swung at her, raking another set of clawmarks down the side of her arm. She hissed as she swung at it again, punching it down into the ground and then hitting it again, over and over with no chance for it to wriggle out from under her.
"Why don't.... you ********... die already?!" She shouted, giving it another kick for good measure.

The sound of a fight had Tortuga hoofing it in that direction, with his aura radar detection down there was no telling what kind of mess he was running right into but since there was a possibility of someone in need of help he didn’t slow down one bit. He slid around a corner just as a knight kicked a downed youma, yelling something about it dying. He was about to say something when the movement of the creature’s tail made it very clear that it wasn’t dead just yet. The tail arched up and started to swing at the knight even as the squire sprinted closer, yelling, “Look out!” At the last moment he could, as close as he needed to be, he slapped his hand against the ground and sent a charge of power through the ring he wore. It wasn’t a lot but it was enough to draw the creature’s attention… he hoped. ((The stone in this ring is a vivid, bright yellow and the ring grants the spark of Electricity. When the ring is equipped, the wearer can be in any form and will have the passive ability to function as a small emergency battery that has an undying charge. When wielded it is just strong enough to recharge a phone or other small electronic. It is not strong enough to short circuit anything or cause damage. Its true power shines while in powered form, though! Striking any inorganic surface with the ring will send an electrical charge through it up to ten feet away. The spark is just enough to startle the first person it reaches but it is not strong enough to cause any lasting damage. The target may feel a tingling sensation but all symptoms should fade within thirty seconds. While there is no limit to how many times the ring can be used, only one spark can be released at a time. The ring cannot be used directly on any organic material.))

Someone shouted and the monster thrashed as Tanais spun towards the sound, unaware that the thing had been striking at her. She swung hard down at the monster and drove her fist into it's skull as it struggled to right itself and reach for her again. It let out a keening wail as it began to darken and crumble, turning to dust beneath her.
Tanais panted as she straightened up, dusting her hands off with a grumble and looking for the voice she had heard early. What she saw, when she finally found him, was a young man. She grinned crookedly as she rubbed the back of her wrist across her stinging face, smearing the blood she tried to wipe off.
"Hey! You did something right?" She called, giving him a jaunty wave. "Thanks for the help. That b*****d was being annoying as hell... I'm glad to have it taken care of. I don't know what happened, but somehow my weapons broke on me. Made it harder to deal with that thing."
The knight shook herself out, feeling the adrenaline start to leech itself out of her bloodstream now that the threat was gone. The aura on her inner senses said this guy was a squire. The colors looked... Jupiter maybe? She hadn't met a lot of his planet, but it was always good to meet more knights.

Tortuga shrugged, glad that he was at least somewhat helpful when it came to taking down that youma. “I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve that’s come in very handy the last few days. With knight magic all screwy it's really been a godsend.” And just think, he had spent months, years even, just avoiding it for the most part. That little magical ring really had come in handy more than he really expected the last year or so, if only as an emergency battery charger for his phone. He never needed to carry a power bank anymore when he was out and about, even with his crappy smartphone. The squire was eyeing the knight, mentally determining if she needed medical intervention, before a particular word caught his attention. ‘Somehow’. With a frown he asked, “are you aware that something is going on with knight magic right now? Not just weapons but everything?” He also added, “Do you need any first aid, I’ve got a kit right here and I am an EMT so if you want I can patch you up.” Tortuga slung his backpack off and held it up. It too had come in handy recently. Medical supplies were always useful. Especially in this batshit crazy city.

Tanais grimaced and shrugged, looking down at her own, and bare, hands.
"I mean, I've noticed there was something off. Powering up has been kind of a pain... like a car that doesn't want to start so you gotta do it a few times before it turns over. First time the damn gauntlets broke on me though... I'm not stranger to bare-knuckle stuff, but what ******** good are weapons if they shatter the moment you tap something harder than a pillow?" She groused as she dropped her hands.
At the offer of patching up, she sighed and shrugged again. She could feel all the places where cuts stung, and the wetness that meant she'd bled.
"If you wanna be an extra set of hands, then I'd take that help. Its easier than trying to reach some of them myself. So, thanks. I appreciate that." It wasn't... comfortable to accept someone's help, thereby admitting she needed it, but she'd be at this long enough to know that sometimes you really needed to just let your pride go. Things always went better when knights worked together, and it would be foolish to deny it. Even if she still did from time to time.
Pacing to the side, she found an over turned crate to settle down on. The alleyway was littered with them, and bags of trash, making for a not too sweet smelling refuge... but it would do for now. Fighting monsters meant following them to their lairs sometimes, and those lairs were not always pleasant places. She eyed the squire as she stretched her legs out in front of her, starting to unwind the leather wraps from around her hands and wrists.
"So an EMT huh? All prepped and ready for trouble... do you go looking for people to patch up, or just have it in case you run across someone?" She asked.

Tortuga followed the other knight and as soon as she settled down on the crate he got to work. First and foremost using some disinfecting wipes to clean out the wounds. He handed a wipe to her so she could clean off her hands and any place she could easily reach. “A little bit of both really. I normally have a small kit on me when patrolling. I’ve also hidden a few hundred across the city just in case but ever since this whole magical screw up I’ve made sure my kit was more substantial.” He explained as he worked. “It’s not just the weapons by the way. Several things are messed up,” The squire went on to explain, his hands never slowing as he steadily patched her up. “You’ve already noticed the delay on powering up, I’m assuming you’ve also figured out that there is that same issue when going back to being a civilian. The weapons either break or melt or just twist like some gummy toy. Wonders are locked out, can’t get to them no matter how hard you try. And last but not least something is wrong with our magic, or at least with the knights that I’ve talked to.” He shrugged and finished up. “No clue what's causing it or how to fix it, hence the kit.” Tortuga cleaned up and moved so he was facing the knight. “I figure it's better to have it in the event I run into someone needing it. If magic isn’t working right, good ol’ muggle Band-Aids work just fine.” The redhead shrugged and gave a half hearted smile. “So I’m guessing you normally patrol alone right? I know I have no room to talk but might want to find someone, probably a senshi since their magic seems to be fine for now, to work with. At least until this whole s**t is figured out.”

She took the offered wipe and began to clean her fingers of the dust and dirt they'd collected in the fight. It stained the wipe brown, no surprise there.
"Sounds like you've got a real handle on all this." She said with a grunt, eyes on her fingers. She hadn't known, actually, about the wonders being locked out. That probably should have been one of the first places her mind had went when her magic failed to work. It was the source, after all, and would explain why things didn't come as easily if there was something wrong with it. She wasn't really the most diligent of knights where her wonder was concerned... and maybe that was part of the problem. At least she wasn't alone in that though, apparently.
"Yeah, I tend to patrol alone. I just tend to do it more than most, or at odd hours, so its kind of hard to get a regular partner for the patrols I do. Normally its not an issue... I'm usually a match for most generals. Just not right now, when I can't get my ******** magic to work right."
She flexed her hands when he finished and tried to summon her gauntlets again, unsurprised when nothing happened.
"Thanks, though, for the patch up. I do appreciate it. And I will keep that partner thing in mind, much as I can. Its a good idea, when things are as weird as they are right now. Hopefully something ******** figures it out, 'cause its ******** annoying..."
"I'm Tanais, by the way." She said, finally realizing she hadn't introduced herself yet.

“Eh, not really.” Tortuga shrugged before explaining, “My magic is fairly useless at this point and my ‘weapon’ is a whistle. So other than alerting others it's not all that helpful. More mundane skills are much more useful in my book.” He did wonder what skill or magic, or even weapon, he would end up with as a knight but it had been years since he became a squire. Many long years. There was some part of him that was certain that he would never make Knight. So might as well do what he could with what he had. “The only reason I knew something was screwy was the feeling I had when I tried to power up. Oh and my aura sense. I’ve gotten damn good at that but it's as messed up as the rest of my magic.” That had really put the spark of fear in him more than anything else. Nearly running into a senshi without ever having an inkling that they had been there was all he needed to know that something was seriously wrong. From there he contacted Shang and everything quickly spread from there. “I get it, I normally patrol alone too but for now…” He trailed off with a grimace. “At least until someone figures out what the issue is and fixes it. Only thing I can suggest is work with a senshi partner or have some kind of backup.Tortuga,” He stuck his hand out for a shake, “I would say it was nice to meet you Tanais but considering the circumstance.” He paused before grinning, “Nah, you know what? Regardless of the circumstance it was still nice to meet you. It's always good to meet new Knights.” He really did need to become more active. To force himself out of his self imposed isolation. Eventually.

Tanais grinned crookedly as she took the offered hand, gripping it firmly in her own.
"No magic is truly useless. Sometimes it just takes some... creativity." The knight said. Whatever cosmic force that assigned them their powers (probably the Code), wouldn't give them something truly useless. The Code needed them to protect it, and giving them useless magic would do it no favors. The challenge would be figuring out how best to use it, and THAT would take practice and work, preferably with other people. But Tanais wasn't his mom, she couldn't force anything on him he didn't want to do.
"But, figured out or not, you're still out here, still trying, and I think that's commendable." She grimaced a little self deprecatingly, shrugging heavy shoulders. "I'd offer to spar and see if I can help you figure things out, but I think we'd have to take a rain check on it anyway, with how weird the magic has been. Once things have calmed down... feel free to send me a note, yeah? Maybe I can help you out."
She might try finding someone to patrol with... but she had a feeling she wouldn't in the end. Finding a partner was a responsible thing to do, and when was she ever responsible?

Whimsical Blue ((We should be just about at a wrap point for this ^_^ either your post or my next one should be fin )) Tortuga just shrugged, not really willing to refute her particular views on magic, useless or not. He had done several sparring matches where he engaged it, but other than providing minor coverage for others there wasn’t much he could do with it. The whistle itself is more useful as a warning or some other signal than his magic. Then again, maybe he hadn’t been thinking of it ‘creatively’ enough. Not that it would do him any good right then. It was pretty much boorked from whatever was going on. “I just might take you up on that. It never hurts to have more sparring partners either way.” He glanced around and sighed, “But yes. Here and now for a spar would be rather pointless. Best scatter before someone with a more chaotic bend shows up. I can’t even sense them if I wanted to.” The redhead grinned a bit sheepishly, “Can’t very well suggest you do something that I’m not likely to do as well but if you do patrol alone at least make sure you have some kind of trump card with you. Even if it's a burner phone to call the cops. I’ve found that it's a fast way to break up a fight.” Tortuga didn’t get a chance to suggest anything else before his own phone started to chime. “Yeah, yeah… I know.” He pulled out the simple device, quickly turned off the alarm, and tossed out a text before explaining, “It also doesn’t hurt to have a ‘check-in’ kind of deal going with a friend. No text or call by a certain time sends out the cavalry and boy howdy do I not want this particular group of rough riders coming to find my a**.” Shang would skin him, Maia would chew his a**, and Antares… she would just ice him out. None were fun on their own, combine them and heaven help whoever pissed them off. Toss in the rest of the redhead brigade, and one blonde, and let's just say, he didn’t miss a check-in. “With that I really should get going. Be careful, stay safe, and try not to punch things without your weapon, ok?”

The Mars knight grinned as she pushed herself to her feet and shook herself out, giving her hands and arms a flex to make sure the dressings weren't going to come free. It was field medicine, that's for sure, but it would do until she could get home. He'd done a fairly fine job of it, all things considered. Better than she could have alone.
"Don't worry." She laughed as she flexed a bicep for him. "I can take care of myself. Ninety-nine percent of the time, anyway."
She offered him a hand to shake after he got done checking his phone, laughing inwardly at herself. There was no way she was going to actually do the smart thing and arrange those safety nets he had... That probably made her distinctly not-smart, but she was fine with that. What was life without the spice of a bit of self-destructive tendencies?
"Get home safe, Tortuga. I'll catch you again soon."

“It's always that one percent that people tend to regret,” He warned even as he took the offered hand. “But it's not like I have any room to talk. Ditto Tanais.” With that he started to head out but paused before he got too far, “See you next time.” With a final wave he faded away into the dark, already on high alert for any trouble that might be lurking nearby. Tortuga would be exceedingly happy when whatever was causing these issues was fixed. He just hoped it would happen before someone died. [Tortuga Fin]
