The wind howled outside the office at the ranch, Viltre had left it unattended and Ushi was catching up on some of his training records, he out of all the brothers was the most meticulous with his records, however he was not about to try and sort through the rest of the mess in there that was a job for superhumans like Iorhel and her Father that actually liked messing around with papers, the really cool part was that the ranch trainers had kept their training journals year after year so they had a veritable library of the goings on between all kinds of species recorded and sitting waiting for inquiring mind to just take a look. It was fun to look back at the old journals particularly his own.
He had a small pair of spectacles on to read and leaned back in the provided chair, putting a clean boot up on the corner of the desk, he for one was not worried about the wrath of Viltre he did not fear death or dismemberment.

She knew where she would find him on this sort of day, at this time of night. Familiarity with routine being one of the many perks of being with the same person for so long.
"My love, there is a call for supplies urgently needed by your Mother, one of the janarim is struggling to birth and we ran out of important items."
There was no one else available to go, but she thought he might like a late night adventure anyway, it was sort of one of their favorite things. She was feeling much better after her trip to Zena, a light had returned to her eyes and she was anxious to share her brightness with those she loved. Helping a distressed mother was as ever a noble cause and she wanted to be a part of it. "Will you come with me?" She asked. She knew already what the answer would be. He would never leave her to go alone if she asked. Not after the past. But they had their daughter back now and a bouncing baby grandson from Kechi.

He looked up to see his beautiful wife, in her usual pose leaning against the door frame. "A janarim in trouble huh?" He said rising, they were his specialty after all. "Can't have that. Yes I will come let me just organize my stuff for a moment and I will be with you shortly."
Okay so he was just a tiny bit afraid of Viltre and his mini me. That and he liked to maintain order in his life, Ein was more of a free spirit but her rules differed slightly from his. He joined Sae at the door when he was ready.
"I'll prepare our mounts." They were training two young janarim and this would be a good learning experience for them as they were usually riden in daylight, it being much easier then to see. But it was important that they be well trained in the dark as well for nights like this or other such emergency situations. He looked forward to their night ride. Hopefully the janarim could hold out until they got back, mom usually caught such things in time.

They rode out of the ranch soon after, not a star was seen in the night sky due to the plethora of clouds that hung about, seeming to judge them for going out. Looking up she hummed a moment. " I think we might get wet tonight Ushi, those clouds look menacing to me." It was the time of year where such things happened so it was not unusual, but it would mean a soggy ride back in the dark. The two janarim were full of energy and sprightly as they (two brothers) bore their riders out of the ranch and onto the trail to town.
Emergency supplies were always available if you knew where to ask, usually other healers that lived closer to the supplies were well stocked for occasions such as these, no one wanted to see a perfectly healthy beast go down due to complications in labour. "Do you think the mother will make it?" She asked her mate, a little worried, as a mother she felt for the animal. Childbirth was never an easy thing.

"Only the gods know that, and without seeing the animal myself I'm not sure what is going on." Besides his mother and Ein he was the most accomplished healer and the standard backup for such matters. Mom had taken advantage of the way his mind worked and it had paid dividends later with all that extra learning and attention from her. He enjoyed the work but it wasn't his favorite thing. Training and being a Dad still held that honor.
"Who knows what tonight will bring, all we can do is do our best." He patted her shoulder kindly. "I know you are worried my love, we can do this." He smiled brightly at her and heeled his mount a little faster. The pair were showing great promise and would make a fine gift for Umen and Rista, which was where these two were going, though Umen and Rista were unaware of that fact, he found it amusing to surprise people thusly. Something he picked up from his Father.

As prediction, the sky opened up and they were dumped on by rain, thunder rolling mightly, and getting closer. Usually this was no big deal but she started to suspect this was one of those special storms when the rain started to fall sideways. She nudged her mount closer to Ushiwa's and they unanimously headed for any cover they could find. On this part of the trail it was few and far between. In the intervening time all they could do was endure without much of a visual lead at all. She was grateful the janarim had not dumped their riders off yet. Strange things happened in big storms.
Eventually her janarim dipped behind an over hang of rock that turned out to be an entrance to a cave, oddly enough there was a chair and a few other bits of furniture in there and a pool of water.
"This must be one of Ustasis' hidey holes that Rista told us about." Apparently their son had quite a few of these safe houses stashed away around where his family lived. It was pretty cool and showed good forthought on the younglings part.

He was grateful for both of their sakes that they had found the cave cubby hole, and what a nice and cozy shelter it was. The only thing missing was hearth and rug, though he did see a vented firepit. "Ussie really rolls out the welcome mat don't he?"
He honestly liked storms, he liked their energy and the surge of power that rolled across the sky intimidating absolutely everything. But he didn't want Sae to be miserable.
"Well I think we won the lottery shelter wise." A splash sounded in the deep. "Ahh likely a snapper in here, he probably wont bother us. Surprised that it is not frolicking out in the rain to tell the truth. They usually love sky water."
He got off of his mount and they busied themselves making their loyal critters comfortable. "A fine gift they will make Aunty and Uncle, Dad was right, I'm going to be sad to see them go though, fine beasts."
He patted the thick armored neck and got a nuzzle for his troubles. He loved janarim with every fiber of his being. They were truly amazing creatures and not too shabby in a melee, which was important. He grinned. They were down right terrifying in fact.

She had always liked the pre and post ride preparations. It was a ritual and it was a bonding experience.
"Yes it will be hard to give them up I think." She patted her mount. He was a thick, sweet boy that always loved his treats. "It will be a wonderful surprise for them." After the two critters were taken care of they set about making a fire to dry off.
"I hope that janarim will be okay, I don't know how long we will be stuck here. Nin might have to just work with what she has, maybe Ein can use her magic in aid."
She fretted but there was really nothing they could do. Soon enough the small orange flame grew bigger and bigger and there was a crackling, merry fire in their midst. It was down right cozy now. "We will have to be sure to drag in some firewood after the storm in thanks, so that the owner will have a supply when they return." She was pretty sure this was their cousins stash.

"Her fate is in the hands of the gods now, there is nothing we can do. Come here and enjoy this fire with me Sae." He tucked her under an arm and leaned his head against hers. "Do not worry, I am sure Mom will figure something out. There is no way to navigate in a storm like this, in fact I think we are lucky that our cave is up a rise, if this continues there may be some flooding later."
It was always a bit of a concern after rain like this. Floods were devastating and could occur quite quickly. A flash flood was hard to escape as they were faster than they could run. He didn't want to think about what would happen should it get into the cave with no way out but they were safe, it was too high to be of much concern. At the very least they were drying out slowly. The pair of janarim were curled up back to back for warmth and looked quite content. The snaptrotter lurking in the back did not want to bug them. Life at the moment was good. He cherished times of snuggling like this. "I'm kinda glad we got holed up in here."

"Me too." It was awfully nice to be all snuggled up with him again. This was something that was usually reserved for bedtime or camping. The man was like a walking talking furnace and soon enough she was very very comfortable. Lulled by the dancing flames and his soothing voice, the contented grunts of their mounts she drifted off into a doze her mind wandering over memories and hopes for the future as the storm carried on outside as if it was trying to claw in to get to them.
She liked storms though so the thunder and lightning didn't bother her, they were even relatively dry now, the space heating up nicely with the fire and one could not beat the ambience they had going on.
"I'm sorry I'm falling asleep on you." Though in truth there was not much else to do in their temporary cave home. "Its...nice here, we will have to remember where this is. Might be good for alone time." She smiled softly.

"It is okay if you cannot stay awake, not much else to do here right now." Besides enjoy the fire and the excellent company. "Maybe these storms should happen more often." He turned his head and closed his eyes, inhaling her scent and savouring her closeness. He loved this woman with all of his heart and no one made him happier.
"Hey," he whispered. "You are pretty sexy for a Grandma." He grinned knowing that she would be too. He loved to flatter her but this was both flattery and jab. Neither of them really looked old enough to be grandparents but there it was. He was uber proud. Vhallas was a gentle soul, more of a Honi or Elaxi type of personality. Ushi was real proud of the kid. He was also wondering when Kechiri would bless them with more, and if it was at all likely that they would get grandkids out of the other three. Oh well, he was grateful to have them all. One came to realize that family was everything.

"Bahahah!" She laughed, she couldn't help herself. "I don't feel like a grandma, but I sure am proud that I am one you know. Should have known that a ranger was on the only one who would be brave enough to face your beloved dragon of a daughter huh?" Kechiri's wrath was known far and wide, though since she had had Vhallas she was behaving herself. Who would have known.
She loved to tease her daughter. They were on slightly better terms now but Kechiri was as ever a wild and opininated thing. Though Sae suspected it was due to their similarities not their differences. Kechiri was definitely her daughter but most of her was from Ushi. But as a female there was a certain amount of headbutting. She knew Kechiri would be running the family one day. Crazy kid, the job was like herding squirrels or raccoons. She shook her head. "I hope she gets a baby girl just like her one day." She grinned evilly. She liked to poke the issue but she loved her baby girl just as much as the other ones and she was proud of her fiery temper.

"Now don't talk like that about my darling daughter, she is sweet as honey." Even he gargled trying very hard to keep a very straight face in the glare of his woman's eyes. Though she too was finding it hard not to laugh. Kechiri was a force of nature there was nothing else to it.
"Didn't you say that the boy had a girl friend?" He asked sneakily.
Ushiruin was as close to his mama as he was to Kechi. But the lad had been wandering further and further from home at every opportunity and he knew that Sae was concerned about that.
"You know he will always come home, he is too tough and smart. Trained him myself ya know." He waggled his eyebrows at her. Able to take down the serious mantle he posed for just about everybody else and being a young boy in a grown man's body. "Even I can't scare him away for long." Though the boy had definitely got his good looks, though his skin tone and manner were a fair mix between him and his wife.

"I know, its just that he is no longer my little follower anymore." She grinned. "He is my big follower instead. I know he has to go out and see the world but...I don't have to like it." She swatted playfully at him and then scrambled across the floor. So long as they were stuck here they might as well live a little and make a game out of it.
Looking back she saw that he was scrambling after her and giggling she fled into the darker interior of the cave to continue the hide and seek. She was trying very hard to control her breathing some time later and he eventually caught up to her.
She knew from the look on his face it was going to be a very long night indeed.
How wonderful.
The next day the storm had yet to ease up. "Looks like we are stuck here for some time don't you think? It hasn't even stopped to take a breath, maybe its a hurricane off the sea."
