I’m out front.
Nataniel sent the text once he was settled in the lineup outside the airport with what must have been dozens of other vehicles. He wouldn’t have expected that it’d be him picking Mier up from the airport for his return from abroad. Didn’t he have friends, family closer to him than Nataniel was? Maybe Mier didn’t want to put them out. Or maybe he feared it would be awkward after he’d been gone so long.
Nataniel already made everything awkward, anyway, so that was no departure from the norm.
And the trip was of no inconvenience to him, either. Nataniel didn’t work weekends, and wouldn't spend broad daylight powered up. If he wasn’t retrieving Mier, he’d be sitting at home alone, doing ******** all. This was better, no matter what the reason was, Nataniel decided. He was pleased that so many of his comrades were coming home to him…
A heavy boot scuffed against concrete as he braced his bike to wait, helmet hanging off the edge of the handlebars so he could watch more clearly for a familiar face emerging through the doors. Nataniel didn’t figure it would be long: phone said the plane had landed and plenty of people were on their way out already. But there was the matter of luggage, and he did expect Mier had a not insignificant amount of that for how long he’d been gone. Bringing a car probably would’ve been better, but it just wasn’t something Nataniel had consistent access to. This would have to be good enough. He’d warned the other ahead of time that he’d have to bring the bike if he wanted Nataniel to pick him up. All Nat could do was inform him.
If it were up to him, he’d find the ride particularly exceptional after people trapped on a stuffy plane with a bunch of disgusting people for hours.
The midday March air was still incredibly crisp after having just tipped from winter into a mountain spring. What Nataniel considered a comfortable 50 degrees. The sun was warm and shining, but it’d feel cooler still once they were driving on the road. Enough to dispel any dreariness after what had to be a… twelve hour trip, probably?
Nataniel didn’t envy that.
