Katya had been watching, listening, from a distance as Alexandre and René worked on patching things up between them. She’d seen the scare that February night and was glad to have been there, to help in saving him, because the French man seemed to be just what the blond needed in his life. But now René was talking about powering up, about doing his duty, and deciding to seek him out. Katya had decided to venture to his shop during the day while he was working.
Little paws smacked at the door till a customer let her in, and she waited tucked under some furniture till the customer had left, once she was in the clear the Mauvian stepped out and made her approach. The little crown on her head was an easy way for René to perhaps realize that she wasn’t some normal cat. But just in case there was any doubt in his mind, which there shouldn’t be, she spoke up softly.
“I heard you the other evening and I’ve been thinking about that. Wanting to go out at night…to power up. You should take me with you, I can assist you of course.” Because she could laser someone in the face if her claws, and teeth, didn’t do enough damage.

René had seen the mauvian sneak into his shop and made sure to try and keep his customers from noticing that a cat had entered. Once they’d cleared, he started to finalize the receipts in his ledger as Katya approached. It wasn’t a surprise that she’d heard him that night with Alexandre so he nodded before tucking his work away.
“I think… I do, at least a bit if it can help Alexandre out. I think maybe that would be better because I worry that he would be too distracted if he came with me while I was figuring things out. I wouldn’t want him to get hurt because of that.” He knew they were capable but at the same time, he also knew they were being extra careful with him to make up for what had happened.
Motioning for Katya to come behind the counter, he took a seat on his stool and rested his chin on his hand while thinking. “I still am a bit unsure of it all, given how things happened, but I do want to help if I can. I don’t like feeling useless and when he showed up here bleeding…” Trailing off, he sighed and rubbed his face. “I worry is all.”

Coming around to stand behind the counter the russian blue stared up at René, green eyes unblinking, it was easy to see how being stared at by a cat might freak some people out. She kept her eyes on him for several moments longer before finally nodding her head. “You will do well, I’ll go with you and keep you safe. I can sense things as well and keep an eye out.” While he could sense others as well she was better at figuring what they were, how close, and more importantly she could figure how dangerous an aura was for the other.
“I believe he’s keeping you safe and tucked away from everything. Not just because he is making up for things, which he should be doing, but he wants to keep you safe from this world. You knowing about it, being part of it, is good enough for him even if you aren’t active. But, I heard you and I want to help. He will, without a doubt, take on helping as soon as he feels like he’s not going to mess something up.” She spoke, shaking her head and leapt up onto the counter top with ease. Sitting there, her tail curling about her feet. “My very job is to tend to corrupt senshi - like you. I cannot help an officer like I can you. You’ve become family and thus my duty and my senshi.” And if she sounded possessive it was because she was. This one was more hers than any others who served under her General. This one was now family of a sort and she knew it, and he most certainly would by the end of this.
“I will give you whatever information I have, I’ll even help you get in touch with other corrupt senshi and officers who can help you. If you want to learn things, to train, behind his back so you can surprise him.” She would do whatever he asked because she could, and it was her duty, if he wanted to improve himself without Alexandre knowing for a while she would assist. Let them both take the blond by surprise and show him he didn’t need to always be protecting others. “He is, if nothing else, reckless and throws himself into things without much thought or worry. I will say that now. Do not be like that. He is lucky he hasn’t gotten killed doing so.” Jabbing a little paw at the other. She would also not be dealing with a sulking blond again…she would move in with Lorcan permanently before she dealt with Alexandre sulking more. Lorcan at least had interesting medical tech she could tinker with, and he didn’t seem to mind, she had something planned for him…a big surprise really.

“That’s reassuring at least, so you can tell if something nasty is near and… you can hide us in a way right? I think I remember that from when Alexandre fed me that thing…” It had been a bit uncomfortable after the fact but it had helped with his injuries.
Readjusting so that she had more space on the counter, René nodded along with what she was saying. It made sense because he was also worried about messing up on his part of things. It was reassuring, to say the least, that a third party had a better view of things, he’d not really gotten the time to speak one-on-one with her with how often he’d been spending time with Alexandre. The only place he really was by himself was during the few days at work the other didn’t join him and the weeknights when he stayed at his apartment.
“He’s sort of been doing that even before February, if not as directly as it seems. But I guess yeah, I don’t want to just be on the sidelines of things. It’s one thing to be kept safe another to be sheltered and I guess that’s kind of a hazy line.” Reaching out, he pet her while working through the words. It was always habit to fall back to his French but that wasn’t really as much of an option with her, at least he figured.
“It would be good maybe to meet others but I am a bit worried about bumping into that nasty one that kicked a lot of this off, not that everything that happened after it was a bad thing but still. I want to play it safer, I have a lot of things I’m juggling to stay here in Destiny City so I can’t really risk getting banged up and not being able to open up shop. I really want to do what I can to make sure that doesn’t happen, I’m quite attached if it wasn’t obvious enough.” He took the jab with a laugh but other than that, he left out all the teasing that usually peppered his conversations. Even if he didn’t like serious topics and skirted around them as best he could, this was something he had to deal with.

“I can cover your signature.” To keep him as safe as possible, because she wouldn’t let someone hurt this corrupt of hers. She would help him out while keeping him safe…she wouldn’t keep him from the fighting entirely like Alexandre seemed inclined to do. One day René would find himself needing to power up and better he be confident in himself than weak and unstable. “Your magic won’t work well for you - not yet. You should team up with others for now. You'll need to stabilize your magic, in time. Until then it won’t always do as it should, it may even turn itself on you, but work and training will help. It is the cost of living overseas where the fighting has concluded, where you were not discovered and brought in sooner - younger.” She would tell him the truth, that his own magic may lash out against him, she wouldn’t coddle him because he would need to know what to prepare for.
“I’ll keep you safe as will anyone else you team up with. I’m sure I can find some who will handle a fight before it gets out of hand.” The Negaverse was not short on violent members, nor were they lacking for those with a fair amount of strength and power. “I’m sure some would be willing to help you and go out at night to fulfill your energy quota.” And keep him, and herself, safe of course. She’d do her part and keep energy signatures covered up, so all would be safe.
“Oh, I can see that you’re attached and I am glad for it, it’ll help keep him in line if nothing else. He might be a little less inclined to go doing stupid things…though I’m certain he won’t avoid them entirely.” No, she’d never get that lucky now would anyone else who knew the petite blond. But he might consider things a bit more…might even hesitate a bit. From subspace the cat pulled a nice, large, fur coat that was meant for someone of a decent height., Settling down on it she was all too happy to curl herself up and eye the other.
“You’ve made him happy…and you’ll continue to. Now, to teach you about the tech and the database full of officers and our senshi…and the database we have on the enemy.” Because he would need to know who to avoid and who to seek out for help. “You could look to General Wolframite if you want to train. Depending on what you’re looking for. I know he helped Benitoite in the beginning. He’s old school and has been around longer than most. He might be a bit…harder though. But he will train you well.” That was for certain from what she knew. He had a lengthy file and she had gone over it once, one night while listening to a storm rage and shake the windows of the house. It had been a good night.

“Okay, then that means I’m hidden which means that I’m less likely to be found out like Alexandre was that night.” That was a plus at least, sort of an invisibility cloak sort of thing he figured which would help while he slowly navigated this whole new side of things. The second bit had him a bit conflicted but it was also something Alexandre had brought up in part.
“I don’t really understand that bit about magic but it won’t…. Kill me right? Just maybe like the recoil from a shot?” At least he really hoped so and it was written all over his face as he had paled a bit. It also made him wonder just how young people were in this whole mess, Alexandre had mentioned children and it didn’t sit right with him at all. But as Katya continued, René could tell that things were a lot more organized for the Negaverse which made him worry just a bit less. As long as he had others around and kept from taking risks he should be fine, which for this type of thing he knew he would definitely be staying on the safer side of things. Sure he took risks in business and pleasure but neither of those would leave him bleeding on a doorstep, at least normally.
“I hope he does keep safe, I want to make sure he comes back in one piece even if maybe I’m a bit selfish about it after January. I won’t apologize for trying to pull him away from this all either though.” Watching the mauvian carefully, he adjusted on the stool.
“Do I need to be magical to see this database? Or do you just have access to it at all times because you’re… you?” He wasn’t sure exactly how to describe her without offending her and he really didn’t want to offend the mauvian if he could manage it. Thinking of a backup, he pulled one of his history books out from under the counter. “If you want to read through some of my books while I’m looking over it you can. I don’t think anyone will be in before I close up with how bad the weather looks like it will be getting. After I close up, maybe we can look into things on the way home. I can try this whole thing out while bringing you home to Alexandre’s place?”

“Yes, only us mauvians can cover up a person's aura. Alexandre doesn’t often go out with me, and even so I rarely cover his aura.” He didn’t mind getting into a fight so rarely asked her to cover his signature. If he were out doing something in particular, something important, than he might ask but it was rare for her to cover up his signature. He could handle himself in a fight so she didn’t worry about it either, she didn’t have much reason to.”No, it won’t kill you. Every senshi, and knight, has different magic connected to their sphere. Magic doesn’t kill, it has a sort of timer on it…a time period where the magic is in effect and then it’s not. Sometimes the feelings from magic may linger but that’s it really.”
Pulling her own tablet out she offered it over to the other. “I can access it any time I please, because I’m always magical. You would need to be powered up to access it, same for the communicator all officers and corrupt senshi have. Alexandre is…experienced in this part of life. He’s as safe as he can be most of the time…but a war isn’t safe in general. It had, from everything I know, gotten safer over time but it means this war is dragging out. A war with no end never does well…it drains resources and people…it kills morale as well. We’ve won everywhere else but this one single city. It’s too dense with senshi and knights.” Though she did often wonder why the higher-ups didn’t get more help from elsewhere, from where the war had ended, but she supposed those other countries wanted them to do this on their own - to earn it. They would send leadership when it was needed but nothing else, no additional officers.
Taking the offered book with a smile, as much as a cat could make, and went to opening the book to read. “That would be good, and you can then spend the night so you don’t risk a car accident on the way home. You can read also from my tablet if you’d like.” It was something he could really sink his teeth into and get lost reading. There was a lot there for anyone to look into.
“You can look over officer files, see if any interest you and you might wish to seek their help as well.” To gain in strength and practice before letting Alexandre know. Ohhh, it did amuse her how he might do things under the table and surprise her blond human by showing off a bit. Contenting herself with the book between her paws she set about reading slowly, using a paw to turn the pages as needed.

Pulling the tablet close, he looked it over and started navigating his way through the training guide as he listened to Katya. “I appreciate it, Katya, I want to avoid being caught out if I can while figuring things out. So there are a lot more rules to this magic stuff than I thought, at least that’s sort of nice.” Tapping through the screens, he read quickly and filtered the keywords he’d need and important topics to revisit. Pausing as he reached the bit about starseeds, he gagged as he thought about the one he’d eaten. Alexandre hadn’t exactly said what it had been when they’d fed him the thing. Clenching his stomach, he dry heaved for a moment before settling back down and avoiding losing his lunch.
“He fed me someone’s soul?” It was a quiet question as he pulled the tablet back and kept reading. Chewing on the inside of his cheek, he thought about it but really couldn’t be mad at the other. They’d done it to help him after he’d been banged up really bad so it wasn’t like it was malicious. It wasn’t something to take lightly but he figured that given the situation, he was very lucky to have had someone on this side of things that had wanted him around.
Source after source, he read over the pertinent information he needed to get started and pointers on what the enemies looked like and their normal methods of attack. It didn’t quite settle well with him but he knew enough about the normal type of fighting to already start planning the best way he could dip into things and hopefully stay safe. Later he’d look over the other files but he was still a bit hesitant to bump into any of them that might be like the one that had kicked this all off.
Hours seemed to pass without any more customers as he sifted through all the information, there was so much, and most of it went over his head. It started to settle how much of Alexandre’s life had been intertwined with this and why it had been so important that he knew at least a bit about what was going on. Sitting up and stretching, he felt the familiar pops and cracks of his joints in his neck. He’d been hunched over the tablet for far too long, too focused on the thing as he read through it. “I think we can head out now, after we walk a bit away from the shop I should use my pen then things can start, right? I shouldn’t do it too close to the shop in case someone sees me walking out like that.”

“If he gave you a starseed then yes. They are a way to heal some manner of injuries and regain some energy. It’s something used in a tight spot, such as a battle, or when medical help cannot be obtained right away.” Or when healing up quickly was the best idea. It wasn’t something often used, since they could become rather addictive, but they worked wonders as far as Katya knew. She’d never eaten one herself, she’d never needed to, but she knew Benitoite had.
“If it helps any I know Benitoite only pulls them from the other side or the occasional drug dealer, pimp, or something similar and those are even rare for him. It’s likely the one you had belonged to a knight or a senshi…someone who would have wanted him dead.” Not that she figured it would help all that much, but perhaps it would, as she was back to reading after she’d spoken. She would speak, looking up from the book, and once done speaking she’d go right back to reading. The book was important but answering questions, and teaching, the other was more important right now.
Looking up, after what seemed like forever, the mauvian nodded her little head. “Yes, never around your job or your home or ours. It is best to do so a block or two away and somewhere out of sight. It wouldn’t do for someone to spot you, while hiding their aura with a mauvian, and to follow you and find out where you sleep.” She spoke seriously. This was very much a war that was dangerous because of the magical element involved in it all.
“I’m assuming we’re going to keep this from Alexandre for a while?” She wanted to be sure of it, even as she stood up and stretched and kneaded the fur coat she’d been laying on. The coat, once she was no longer standing on it, vanished back into subspace.

Taking in a deep breath as they confirmed things, he just tried to push it under the rug in his mind. It would be easier to not think about the things like that, just thinking of them as some sort of healing magic item or something. But he would be cautious of the things either way after reading up about them. “It does, a bit…” The fact that they’d been taken in sort of a last resort situation, much as he’d heard Lorcan talking about when they’d come to his shop to check on Alexandre.
Getting up from his stool, he packed things up and carefully picked Katya up to carry her out with him so he could lock up the shop. She wasn’t too big or heavy so he sort of draped her over his shoulder while fiddling with the keys until the lock clicked and let him know everything was closed up for the day.
“So… not close to here or Alexandre’s home… I think I remember the way there so let’s try it out?” Walking a few blocks from his shop, he picked one of the alleys that was a bit dimmer than the rest and pulled out that pen of his. Staring at it, he hesitated for just a few moments before calling out and powering up. Closing his eyes as his uniform melted over his clothing, he knew there was a hole in his chest now but didn’t want to look at it yet. Taking a deep breath he opened his eyes and looked at Katya. “Yes, don’t tell my angel. I don’t want him to worry about this when we both already worry about things not working out for the normal side of things.”
It was a bit funny in a way, that they worried about messing up just as much as he worried about messing up. Things were going smoother now though, even if just the smallest bit of him still worried about them vanishing. Now it was time to take steps to try and make sure it didn’t happen because he didn’t want to get hurt again.

She was certain things would work out, in time, he was making steps towards this part of his and Alexandre’s life. It would be slow going, she knew it, but baby steps were still steps and they were in the right direction. Not everyone would dive into things like this, into a war, and she knew it. So she remained draped about his shoulders as René headed off to power up for the first time on his own.
Once he’d powered up she poked him in the cheek with a paw of hers. “I won’t tell him, I’ll leave that to you. I think this is a step in the right direction for both parts of your lives. It’s not easy to blend both parts of one's life, not when they are so different, but I think you two will manage it just fine. Once you get some time spent like this, and figuring how to balance things, you and my general will do even better together. That understanding will be there.” And not needing to hide things either…it’ll also help when they don’t worry about each other as much. It would take time but she had a feeling Alexandre was in this for the long run…both of them were.
“Now, let’s go.” Already she was using her own magic to keep his signature hidden. “You’ll find yourself a bit stronger and faster than usual…as you gain in rank you’ll gain in strength and speed. Benitoite can hit rather hard…and jump further…and land from a rooftop well also. Not to mention the teleporting. They’ll all come in time. I won’t push you too far too fast. But those are things to expect.”

Reaching up to pet the mauvian slightly, he shuffled through the alleyways and made his way toward Alexandre’s home. It was normally a half-hour drive so if he walked it, it would be a lot longer. Though each step he took did feel a bit quicker so maybe it wouldn’t be as bad of a trek as it would be if he walked normally. “I’m glad you think it will go well, I really hope it does…” Fiddling with the long strands of hair as he walked became a better way to keep his mind off the hole in his chest.
Each movement he took was still skittish though, that worry that something could jump out or that the black and green-haired woman would appear and take another shot at him. Both Alexandre and Katya had reassured him that the woman couldn’t do anything to him but it was still something he wasn’t ready to risk. Maybe if he could figure this out and fix whatever wonkiness was with the magic he had, then maybe he would be able to handle this with the ease he had with most things in his life.
René nearly jumped out of his skin when he happened upon someone sleeping near one of the dumpsters. The smell of alcohol and bodily fluids hit him as he pressed himself behind the other side of the thing. They were snoring, or at least were making a sound that sort of fit that description. Thinking through the training guide, he thought maybe he should try to siphon off a bit of energy if he could.
Kneeling down to the side of the unconscious man, he focused and touched a finger to them as he siphoned off a bit of energy. It took a few tries as he kept losing focus at every small noise that echoed in the alley but eventually, he got it and slowly stepped back with the orb and examined it before sending it into his subspace. Leaving the man behind, he made his way through a few more alleys before daring to speak up.
“I know they can’t sense me but damn… I feel like a kid trying to sneak out for a party. Trying to gather energy takes more focus than the guide lets on.” It would get easier, he figured, as he ranked up or got more practice. There was information regarding that but at least he had started which was progress in itself.

She had watched, wanting to silently observe the other, as he made his way towards Alexandre’s home while keeping to the alleyways. When he finally decided to gather some energy, a poor homeless man being the victim, she watched and kept from giggling over it as he kept slipping on his focus. “It’ll come easier and easier as you get used to it. Practice does make better, I can assure you of that. Once you gain in rank you won’t need to touch them either.” Alexandre didn’t like touching the homeless people he gathered from, too dirty for him, and he didn’t need to. She knew Lorcan kept hand sanitizer on him so he could take energy from people and clean his hands. He’d be glad to make Captain if for no other reason than not needing to touch people, and keep cleaning his hands, she did wonder if perhaps she should get some sort of lotion for his hands. They must be dry with all the sanitizer he used, she’d find a good all natural brand for the gift.
Laughter came from her while she tapped him on the cheek. “I’m sure you snuck out a lot, unlike my little general who didn’t sneak out for such things.” He snuck out for these things…to hunt for energy and get into fights.
“If you want you could try the other mode of transportation in this city. Rooftop jumping…it’s rather common.” A lot of meetings on rooftops…a lot of order and chaos - it was too common. “Until you are ready you should avoid the big park in the city…and even some of the smaller ones. Parks are common places for chaos and order to frequent…” If he went for a park he’d best have more than just her around…at least until he had his magic under control and some more power.

“That’s a relief, it means I won’t have to be as close either right?” Rubbing his hands off on his uniform as he walked, he tried to keep a lookout for other civilians or if anyone else was powered up as he kept to the alleys and tried not to make too much noise. He wanted to avoid attention tonight if he could.
The laughter startled him as he moved across the street to the next alleyway, trying to keep track of where he was heading in this maze of a city. “Well, maybe I am a bad influence on him since he kept sneaking out to see me.” Teasing just a bit, he spotted a path that looked like it led to a park. Taking their advice, he avoided it and kept to the alleys, checking his phone to see that he was only about five or so minutes away from his destination.
“No rooftops, I want to stay low and out of sight for now if I can. I guess if people sleep on benches in parks that would make sense why both sides frequent there. I should power down here soon though, I don’t want him to find out but I think he’ll enjoy the fact I’m stopping over. It’ll be a nice surprise and I’m a bit tired after this jog.” A few more blocks and he returned to normal after making sure there wasn’t anyone around to see him. That was the last thing he wanted, someone following him to Alexandre’s place. “You sneak in another way? Or do you think he won’t figure it out if you’re with me?” Looking at the cat on his shoulder, he offered some slight chin scratches to her while digging in his pocket for the house key with his other hand.

“No, you won’t need to be. But first you’ll need to get to super.” She stated with a smile, hoping it might motivate him to get there. Anything she could do to help him and Alexandre she would do, because these two obviously needed each other. She knew Lorcan wasn’t the biggest fan, and might never be, but he had the same opinion as Katya about these two. “If anything I think Lorcan and I can both agree you have been a good influence on him thus far. He is happier and more free to be himself.” She spoke seriously, wanting to make sure René understood that.
There was no hiding from Alexandre about money, social standing, or the Negaverse because René was apart of those things and understood them and knew about them. Alexandre had always had to lay back or hide things and now none of that was needed - he got to be himself.
“People go on walks, runs, and dates in the park so both sides go there often. The Negaverse to gather energy, along with the dark mirror, and senshi and knights to stop them. It turns into a mess…a dangerous mess some nights.” She spoke seriously, thinking of the few times Alexandre had mentioned big things happening in parks.
“I doubt he’ll notice, especially if he’s not by the door to see us arrive together.” And anyway, he might not assume anything even if he saw them together. He might just assume she was spending time with his partner, as she should be, he was now becoming a part of the family even if Alexandre wouldn’t say it just yet. “We’ll continue to go out like this, get you used to things…and eventually roof tops.” Because she would get him comfortable with this part of his life, so he could keep safe, she wouldn’t have him taken away from them any time soon.
