 taarumpost oneAfter having intermittent success with training Papa's snapptrotter, Taarum decided to try getting to know Mama's raptrix. He had taken it slowly, introducing himself, giving the creature treats, and backing off when she seemed agitated by his presence. Even though it had only been a week, he was beginning to feel like this would be way easier with a littler animal.
"Papa?"
His father was standing outside, fiddling with something that looked like a wooden ball on a string.

 serrpost oneThere had been a time when Serr had thought he'd always be the best at his little tricks, but lately Fiiadri had surpassed him with cards, coins... everything. He had taken up the yo-yo as something new to tinker with, but doing anything impressive with it was surprisingly difficult. She'd probably be better than him at this soon enough. He wasn't mad about it.
Serr pulled at one of the strings wrapped around his fingers just so, sending the toy flying back into his hand. "Hi, Taarum. Are you okay?"

taarumpost two"Yeah, Papa. Everything's fine." Taarum smiled and pat awkwardly at his father's side, right next to his two pale little scars. It was meant to be reassuring, even though he knew Papa didn't really need it.
"I want to talk about animals, if that's okay?"

It had been such great fun to watch his son grow up surrounded by their giant pets, not only because Taarum had always had a way with them, but also because prior to the birth of the twins it had been a while since he and Eziya had spent time with the creatures themselves. They deserved a little attention.
"What about them?"

Taarum swallowed. He wasn't denied much, but he still felt weird asking for a whole animal. "A baby. I hope."

serrpost threeOh! He hadn't been able to guess what his son was going to ask, but this request was an easy one to grant. Taarum wanted another pet, they'd get him one.
"Yeah, sure. We can do that."

That was it? He had expected to have to work to pay for the breeding, at the very least. Taarum'd had a whole proposal thought up, and now that he didn't have to use it, he had nothing more to say.
"I was... um... kind of thinking it would be harder to get you to agree."

serrpost four"Nah." Serr smiled, patting Taarum's shoulder. "If you want something, we'll figure out how to get it." It was how he had operated his whole life, but to be honest, now that Serr thought about it, he wasn't the type to want much of anything in the first place.
"What kind of animal are you looking for?"

"Okay. I'm thinking about one I can ride. I was trying to be better friends with Mama's raptrix, but I don't think she wants to be friends back."

Serr's smile remained, suggesting that he was most definitely kidding.

"I don't think he'd want to learn to fight, do you?" Ulgo was pretty good at learning new tricks, but Taarum couldn't see the snapptrotter performing fancy battle moves or giving anything his full attention for more than twenty minutes.

He had only recently learned about the birds and the bees, so while he knew such things were possible, he wasn't all that clear on how. "Maybe give the other owner a cub as payment? I'm not sure how it works."

"You're right! Maybe she doesn't even want cubs at all. Or if she did, how would she feel about us giving one away?"
Taarun sighed, sitting down beside his father. "If we can't breed one of our mounts, then I guess I'll need a lot of money."
