The chill in the air had Hestia gently buttoning the old man's jacket against the cold, his head nodding, barely conscious. She'd taken rather a lot from him, but needs must. While energy gathering as part of quota was certainly an important duty, she found herself gathering more and more recently, to have treats on hand for youma such as Ethe and Headache. The former much more appreciative than the latter.

The man would be fine, though, with a bit of rest, and the maid senshi laid him out on the bench with care, even letting his rest on her lap. She'd guard him for the rest of the night and make sure nothing worse came along to pick up her leavings, such as a thief, or a youma, or a Borax. The show of care and concern for the civilian did not, of course, mean she was done with him.

Gloved hands, deft and delicate, sunk into his chest and lightly pulled out the starseed for just the barest moment before returning it. Hestia had yet to take one, but it was an inevitability, and she would so hate to waste something of such sacred importance though unpracticed handling. Seeing no ill effect, the corrupt senshi dipped her hand down once more.

Saiph had followed the aura trail, curious as to who or what could be generating such a strong feeling of Chaos. She hadn't fully decided what to do if she found the source. But now, as she peeked out from behind a tree and watched a dark clad senshi put her hand into a guy's chest, she found herself frozen in shock. It was wrong! This is what corrupted senshi did.

Ilmare hadn't done such things, but the situation then had been wildly different.

Clearly this one had no problems being creepy. And she was strong. Much stronger than Saiph.

I am going to get my butt handed to me, she thought.

But she couldn't not do something. And she couldn't risk using her magic when it might hit the guy on the bench. She was not going to hurt someone who was already harmed. So.. distraction maybe? Or find something to chuck at the senshi's face?

Assuming a bravery she did not feel, Saiph moved into the light and crossed her arms.

"What d'you think you're doing hurting that guy?" she said in a clear voice. "You better knock it off or I'll find a way to make you stop."

If her voice trembled a smidge, well, no one could blame her.

She hadn't expected the basic in the area to approach, but then, maybe that sort of rash bravery was unavoidable in the inexperienced. She looked young. And she was indeed brave, to threaten a corrupt eternal by herself. Perhaps there was a cat somewhere near, acting as an out-of-sight escort and safety measure. Hestia hoped so, and knew that likely wasn't the case.

Letting her hand slip out of the man's chest, Hestia slowly stood up, rearranging him to lay down in some semblance of comfort. Dusting her skirt with her hands, she sighed, and for a moment it almost seemed like she was simply going to leave at the senshi's request. Afterall, standing at a whole 5'3" and bearing petite features, she wasn't of a particularly impressive or intimidating build, whatever her uniform's wings may indicate.

But then, as she stepped away from the civilian, the corrupt solemnly intoned, "Please explain how you intend to make me do anything."

A full body shudder took Saiph over as she watched the corrupt’s hand slide out of the man’s chest. Things like that shouldn’t be possible. It was wrong! It was so so wrong. Feeling nauseous, the chibi senshi held her ground, jaw clenching. Sure, the corrupt wasn’t much taller than she was and she was going through a growth spurt, not that that helped anything right now, but still. She could do this, right?

If only the corrupt wasn’t so calm. It was honestly kind of freaky. As was her moving of the man to make him more comfortable. What on earth was going on? But she was leaving, right? Saiph allowed herself a soft, relieved sigh, only to have the hope dashed when confronted and asked to explain herself.

s**t. Shitshitshitshit.

How could she make anyone do anything. She wasn’t intimidating. She wasn’t very strong. Certainly not in terms of pure power. And just because the other girl looked about her size didn’t mean that she couldn’t fight harder or know special moves. So what do I have, she thought frantically.

“I can’t explain since I don’t know what you’re capable of, beyond shoving hands where hands shouldnt’ go,” Saiph answered honestly. “But I’m stubborn and I’m tougher than I look and I’ll figure something out.”

Apparently what Saiph had was stupid, stupid bravado.

s**t.

Hestia waited, patient and attentive, to hear the explanation. But it sadly wasn't much of one. There was a certain sense of disappointment in the tilt of her head, even if her expression remained neutral. And then, she was gone.

And then, horribly, she was not.

Having only a small difference in height meant Hestia didn't have to either bend down or reach up when she appeared directly in front of the girl. All she had to was reach out with vicious speed and...there it was. Her hand at the girl's chest, hovering over that sweet spot of the soul. "First," she said calmly, "shoving my hand where hands shouldn't go, is the primary danger you face right now."

She considered removing her hand for a moment, but decided it was a particularly good motivator. Besides, she'd like to see the senshi's next step.

"Second," Hestia continued, "the youngest and least experienced lieutenant has this ability. Toughness is no shield against it. So, I will give you a second chance to explain yourself."

Saiph hadn’t even had time to mentally register the older girl’s vanishing before she had reappeared and placed her hand on Saiph’s chest. For a moment, all the chibi senshi could think was how tiny the older girl was now that she was so close. She couldn’t remember half of the things that her cat had told her about being a chibi. Only that it offered some protections against certain bad situations. But whether that meant that her starseed could or could not be accessed had never been made clear.

This close, feeling the girl’s hand, she was inclined to think that she could be bodied fairly easily. Maybe she was incorruptible, but she wasn’t unkillable. And rather than causing a panic, Saiph felt an odd calm settle over her. She could be scared and sick later, if there was a later, but right now she had to keep perfectly still on the inside. This girl wanted an explanation that she wasn’t at all sure she could make satisfactory. But as close as they were…

Saiph could try her magic and hope for a chance to bolt. But what good was bolting if this girl could teleport? There was no good solution here. And when faced with death, Saiph chose to let certain frustrations loose. This girl wanted her to explain herself? Okay then.

“What am I supposed to explain?” she snapped. “That’ve I’ve been like this since I was seven? Because a big, fluffy cat told me I was special and destined to be a magical warrior. But nobody ever explains anything because they’re worried about bedtimes and homework, but it’s okay because I just have to power up and go fight the bad guys! I’m just improvising and hoping everything works out and that I’ll be able to wake up and see my mom and another sunrise. I don’t have an explanation for you, Lady! I only have my gut and a lot of hope that I can do some good and protect people.”

Without thinking, Saiph’s hands had balled into fists in response to her own internal frustration. And right now, it didn’t matter that she had a corrupt senshi within inches of her starseed. Saiph moved quickly, punching through the air and wanting nothing more than for it to land with enough force to make this strangely calm girl to back away.

“How can I explain anything when I never even knew senshi like you could teleport? I don’t know what you can do beyond what you’ve done and it’s scary but I can’t not try to help the people you’re hurting!”

The punch landed, and the corrupt watch the fist hit and...nothing. After a short pause to emphasize that particular sort of nothing, Hestia lifted her hand just enough to flick the girl's brooch. A chibi senshi then. "So you know you're ignorant, that you've remained ignorant for four...five years now? More?"

She took a step back and clasped her hands very properly in front of her.

"No matter what the cat said, you are not required to power up and fight. You do not have to come out at night alone. You do not have to face those stronger than you without help. You've been making choices."

Hestia's eyes shuttered and the timbre of her voice shifted, "Bad ones." And then, flatly, "The Sparkling Finish."

The area around the chibi lit up.

”You really don’t get the average seven year old, do you,” Saiph heard herself muttering, furious and shamed by the corrupt senshi’s assessment of her. There was no point in explaining further or even trying to. Of course she’d been making choices and bad ones at that. Because she’d been recruited under the belief that she had to be a hero. Up until now, her way of doing things had worked, so why would she have ever thought to change them?

When the attack came, all Saiph could think to do was drop and try to make herself as small a target as possible. Only, as she did so, she felt herself sliding and panicked, causing her to slip even more. Even worse, was the glare all around her, bringing tears effortlessly to her eyes and making it nearly impossible to see.

I am so incredibly screwed, the thought echoed and bounced through her head. She couldn’t really move, she couldn’t see. She was a sitting duck and the corrupt senshi would know that.

“I’m going to die, aren’t I?” she asked in a soft, small voice aimed more at herself than anyone else. And then she moved a little too much and slipped, falling to the ground.

Hestia no longer even remembered being seven years old, and beyond that didn't feel much fondness for the concept of children, let alone the reality. But she did still feel sympathy and attachment for the young senshi and knights of order. The ones who ran out night after night, determined and directionless, relying only on their instinct to do something right and true.

They were all little fires in the night, burning resolutely until...

She looked on through the glare as the girl fell to the ground and there was still a part of her that wanted to pick the teen up and dust her off. To tell her that she was brave and amazing. To tell her about all the allies who were only a call away. To give advice and encouragement.

But that sort of thing was no longer her role and would simply undermine an equally important lesson. Counter to that softer urge was the idea that maybe she was still being too gentle. That maybe a stronger magic, more painful and lasting, would make the lesson stick.

I'm going to die, aren't I?

"Maybe." The corrupt's voice remained calm and uncaring, and when the glare dimmed and magic faded the senshi was gone. The man on the bench remained sleeping, but there was now something vaguely different about it. He wouldn't be waking up again.

Within the Castle halls, Hestia looked at the starseed in her hands, glowing with the gentle remains of a life, and sighed. It was the first she'd taken and kept, but some lessons were worth the cost.

The calm in the corrupt senshi’s Maybe was almost scarier than the monsters that Saiph had come across in her short life. She couldn’t see, she couldn’t really escape physically from where she stood and she had no idea what might be happening outside the glare. And she was seriously regretting ever confronting the corrupt with so little in the way of a concrete plan.

When the glare finally faded, a tiny corner of Saiph’s mind thought that she’d never felt so clean in her entire life. The rest of her mind was in a panic. She couldn’t see the corrupt anywhere and halfway expected a surprise attack. Only to have logic step in and force her to realize through her fright that she couldn’t feel any chaotic aura nearby. She’d been left alone and alive. And she couldn’t stop the soft, choking sobs that escaped from her chest. If the corrupt had wanted to imprint on her that she needed a better way of handling things, well, she’d succeeded.

After a few moments, she wiped her eyes and remembered the entire reason she’d picked a fight in the first place. Glancing around, she saw the man on the bench and scrambled over, letting out a tiny moan as she checked for a pulse and found nothing. She placed a hand over his heart and wondered… Instinct said that the corrupt had taken his starseed while she’d been stuck in that glaring, slippery spell.

You’ve been making choices. Bad ones.

This was all her fault. She’d made the choice to confront someone infinitely stronger than herself. She’d thought she could handle this alone. Just because no one had ever gotten seriously hurt before didn't mean it would never happen and she should have known that. She had a damned phone and could have so easily pressed the Assist button and just kept the corrupt talking until help got there. There were so many paths she could have chosen…

Sinking down beside the bench, Saiph let herself cry, both for herself and for the man who had died. If the corrupt senshi had meant to teach her a hard lesson, she’d succeeded. Saiph didn’t think the pain of it would ever leave her.
