Fang wanted to learn to care for his planet again. His whole life, he'd been left behind by it as Chaos poisoned everything. Everyone. Starving, half-mad, nearly completely feral. But he'd been a child then, when it had started. Now... he was stronger. Better. He could trying to fix everything. He desperately wanted to. His memories of the early days were fainter now, but he knew he wanted to bring his world back. He'd heard people were doing that, and he was desperate for it. If he could bring the Chrysocyon back, he'd.... he didn't even know what he would do. Cry, likely.

He took a deep breath and turned to Michel. He couldn't bring himself to go alone still. Not yet. Being alone frightened him more than anything.

"Ready?" he asked, tilting his head as his ears twitched slightly.

The memory of their last trip up was still vivid in Michel’s mind, but who was he to protest or caution Fang? He knew what he was doing. Probably. He knew what Fang wanted to accomplish, but Michel wasn’t even sure if it was an obtainable goal. He wasn’t the most hopeful sort, but he wasn’t going to share his doubts or concerns.

Fang had enough of those.

Michel would go to support him, and to do whatever he could to help him reach those goals.

“I’m ready,” he said, in a tone that was both patient and filled with resolve. There wasn’t any point in standing around just thinking about what could happen. If there was going to be any success or progress, it was going to be on Fang–not here.

Probably.

Fang beamed brightly at him and took his hand, concentrating for a moment. In a blink, they stood on the planet Fang again. Immediately, Fang's shoulders tensed as he looked around. The dim light that been the norm since the original start of the fall of his planet seemed to almost choke him, but he took a deep breath and reminded himself he was safe. He could leave at any time.

He ground his teeth together audibly and gave a little growl deep in his throat to chase off the offending thoughts. SAFE, he countered to the voice of fear in his head. Pack. Home.

With a sharp exhale, he opened his eyes (not realizing they'd shut in fear) and looked out into the darkness again. In the barest hint of a memory, he could almost see the fields and the forests beyond in bright daylight. He wanted to bring that back.

"Thank, Michel. What look for, to fix?" he wondered, aiming to see if Michel might have thoughts about where to begin. Surely he knew more about the process than Fang did—but if he didn't have ideas, Fang did.

The world wasn’t as unnerving to Michel as it was to Fang, but he hadn’t had to see its decline and he felt far less emotional attachment to this world. But it had a strange, repulsive energy about it. Like it didn’t want them there.

Michel was on guard as soon as they arrived.

Though he no longer needed to keep hold of Fang now that they’d arrived, he made no effort to release his hand, either.

“I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anything quite like this,” he said, skimming the horizon. He wished he had a simple answer. He wished something pinged on his radar that just told him what was wrong and where to go. The world felt slimy. Suffocating.

“What does it feel like to you? If you focus, can you sense anything that stands out?”

Fang nodded a little, also not releasing his grip on their clasped hands. It just—it felt better, having that real, physical anchor to remind him he wasn't alone anymore. he took a deep breath and tried to see if he could sense anything magical, but nothing seemed new or different from when he'd lived for so long, trying to scrounge off the dried up lands.

"Can't feel anything," he reported, opening his eyes. He tilted his head, flexing his ears to see if he could pick up on anything, but no.

He scowled into the night and sniffed the air. Smelled the same, too.

"Maybe Fang think too hard," he said with a soft sigh, dropping his head to look at the ground—and then paused.

"Fresh tracks," he gasped, pressing closer into Michel's side.

Michel scanned the area, temporarily distracted by Fang’s twitching ears despite his familiarity with their motion. He hadn’t seen the tracks, but Fang’s eyes were probably much better than his own. Especially on his own world.

He leaned over a bit to see them better, pressed against Fang and not caring about the closeness. If it were someone else, he might have taken a step away or shaken them off of him, but he was familiar with Fang’s proclivities and it would have done more harm for Fang than it would good for Michel to put distance between them. Maybe he didn’t even mind that much.

“Fresh tracks from what?”

He looked at them only briefly before he scanned the horizon again. He didn’t see anything move. “Can you identify them?”

Fang grimaced, looking at Michel, and then down to the tracks again. Slowly, he knelt down and sniffed at them. A strong scent of death wafted into his nose and he sneezed, pulling back up quickly and retreating into Michel's side once more.

"Dead things don't move," he said harshly. "Yet. Smell dead. Smell wrong. Not prey-dead, not hunting-dead. Dead-dead."

He fiddled with one of the coins on the edge of the scarf at his right side, bringing it up to show Michel.

"Paw marks are Chrysocyon," he explained in a grave whisper.

Michel was already watching him with a wary expression. He was used to things being dead-ish on his Wonder, where even the living creatures seemed like they could have passed for walking corpses. He had no emotional attachment to any of the creatures–or remains–that he found.

Things were undoubtedly different for Fang.

Tilting his head, Michel examined the coin Fang offered.

“All right,” he said slowly. He trusted Fang’s identification, he just didn't know what he was supposed to do with it. “So what do you think that means?”

…Zombie Chrysocyon?

This wasn't Michel's world, and he wouldn't dream of doing anything not first sanctioned by its Senshi. He was here for support.

He was just trying to figure out all that it entailed.

"Fang not know. Fang not remember the dead walking." He stared at the ground.

That awful memory floated back to the surface. What had he and his mother been running from? He wasn't certain anymore. He just remembered running. She fell. Screamed at him to run. He hid.

He knew he'd watched her die, but what precisely had happened? It felt maddening, and his skull pounded with the ache of trying too hard to remember. He knew Chaos had come, seeped into his planet, a planet he'd only just learned he needed to protect, had caused strange things—he felt unsteady as other pieces came back to him, pieces that had been starved out by the hunger the unending, monstrous hunger, other things must have been JUST AS HUNGRY—he whimpered, clutching at his head.

Chaos had corrupted his planet. His people. The village. He screamed, suddenly, a roar that tore itself from his throat. None of the details came to him, stayed maddeningly slipped away, and he loathed it with every fiber of his being.

All he knew now was that for some reason, the dead had begun walking (perhaps again? or had that plague been something different? something that stole the minds of his people and turned them into monsters before they died—he'd heard of something like it on Earth... may-bees?) and his planet was suffering all over again, after so long of being quiet.

Michel watched for only a second before he placed his hand on Fang’s back. Ordinarily, he might have given him his space, but there was something so primal, so feral, about the scream that he wanted to make sure Fang was still here, with him, and not lost in some memory he could only fathom.

“Fang,” he said, just to remind him that he was here with him. He could see that Fang was in pain, suffering, but there was only so much he could do when there was still so much to grapple with.

“I don’t know what’s going on. But if it’s something we can stop, we will.”

He didn’t look at Fang for long; he glanced around to look for movement.

He didn’t see any.

…But a scream like that was sure to summon anything nearby, wasn't it? If it didn’t chase them away.

Fang's chest heaved with the harshness of his breathing, but he willed himself to calm down as Michel's hand laid on his back, the warmth of it radiating out from its point. It made him relax a little and he sighed.

"Thank, Michel. Fang... too tired. No more today," he mumbled, leaning into Michel's side. "Home?"

Michel wasn’t going to put up any argument on the matter; if Fang was ready to go, so was he.

He was used to creepy places in space; his own Wonder was particularly unpleasant, but it was different here. On Michel he at least felt like he had a connection to it. He felt like he could control it.

Here…

He didn’t know what to expect. And everything Fang found was uncomfortable and unnerving.

Michel didn’t let it show on his face; he rubbed Fang’s back and clapped him on the shoulder gently, reassuringly.

“Yeah. Let’s head back. You did good today, I’m proud of you. Let me get you some roasted rabbit for dinner.”

He didn’t know if Fang was hungry or if it was something he’d be interested in, but ever since Fang had mentioned his fondness of rabbit, Zac had started prowling Destiny City to find any restaurant with rabbit on the menu. He didn’t think it was ever going to be a taste of home, he just hoped that if it wasn’t enough to comfort him, it would at least be something to look forward to.

Fang perked up at that, tail wagging slowly with cautious excitement. Michel promising roasted rabbit meant good things. He let out a little yip of excitement and hugged Michel, bringing them back home with a moment's thought.

"Yes," he said, in case his body language hadn't been enough.

The tail wag was more than enough to reassure Michel that it was a good idea, and the way Fang swept them back to Earth so quickly must have been a good sign.

There was a lot that Michel knew he couldn’t do for Fang. There was just so much that had happened before they met, and undoubtedly there were parts of Fang’s journey that he was going to have to tackle alone. Michel could piece together the bits and pieces of his story, and he had slowly begun to understand the calamity that had befallen Fang.

Michel had been through his own sort of trauma–not that he’d have ever admitted it–but Fang was in a different class.

Not that he’d have ever admitted it, but Michel didn’t know how to fix himself. But maybe he could help Todd, instead.

He patted his back encouragingly and powered down.

Zac didn’t really know how to do a lot of good for the world. In his own way, he tried. For tonight, he’d just get as much rabbit as they could carry home.
