Fifth Year's Defense Against the Dark Arts class is held at 9:00am on Mondays and Wednesdays Located on Hogwarts' third floor is the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom. The room is bright with the curtains of the large windows always open. The windows themselves will sometimes be open depending on the weather. The classroom is light on decor, Professor Monroe preferring to have as much open space as possible. However there are a few mementos including his diploma, a few vintage newspapers, and even an American flag hanging tucked in one of the corners. At the head of the classroom there is a desk, though Professor Monroe rarely sits and when he does it's usually on top of the desk. Next to the desk is a chalkboard he uses while teaching. Off to the side there is another smaller chalkboard with the word Rules underlined. There is only one thing beneath it; "I trust you, just don't be an idiot."Professor Monroe's office is situated above the classroom and is almost always open in case students need anything.

Jack galloped down the stairs from his office and down into the classroom. It was a few minutes before 9:00, and his fifth-years would soon be trailing in. He walked down the length of the classroom, flicking his wand every few feet causing the curtains on each window to fly open. He always wanted as much light in the classroom as he could get. He'd done everything he could to make his room as open, airy, and bright as possible. In his experience, students performed better when it was light.
Once everything was open and organized Jack moved back toward the front of the classroom and to the chalkboard. In large letters that would be visible to the whole class he wrote the word "Protego". He began to write more words underneath as his fifth-year students began to enter the room. He was greeted by a, "Hey Uncle Jack!"
"Hey kid," he replied, turning from the board and spotting Charlotte. He finished up his list and placed the chalk down. He leaned back against the desk and watched the kids file in.
Once Jack felt like everyone had arrived he stood and gave a clap. "Alright, everyone! Today we're covering what I think is the most important spell you'll ever learn in this class. Protego; the shield charm. It could easily be the difference between life and death." He'd seen it firsthand. "Now, we're just starting with the basics today but I did want to point out the different variations of the spell." He motioned to the list on the board and read out, "Protego Duo, Protego Horribilis, Protego Maxim, Protego Totalum, and Protego Diabolica. Each is a different power level and/or configuration. Except Diabolica. You don't want to mess with that one. Trust me."
He then pulled out his wand. "It's a simple movement, just a line up and down." He quickly demonstrated. "I'll have you guys group off and practice, but first I'll do a demonstration. Charlotte!" One advantage to having family in his class was that it gave him someone to pick on. "Stand up and give it a try." After the girl had a moment to prepare herself he pointed his wand toward her. "Rictusempra!"

════════════════════════ Charlotte strode into the classroom with a smile. Defense Against the Dark Arts was one of her favorite classes, mostly because Uncle Jack was teaching. There were certain advantages to be related to the professor. Never unfair ones, but when you already spoke to the teacher on a regular basis help was easy to come by. As usual, she was the first in the room. "Hey, Uncle Jack!" She said as she made her way to her desk.
She sat down, carefully placed her wand on her desk, and crossed her ankles. Once Jack started talking, she listened carefully. She was focused, but admittedly, she was still a bit startled when Jack called her name. However, she obliged and stood up. She readied his wand and, with a deep breath, called out, "Protego," with a downward swish of her wand.
Half a second later Jack let out a spell of his own. There was a moment of impact and the shield in front of her seemed to light up and become visible. Her heart soared. She'd done it. Unfortunately, she celebrated too soon. Suddenly the spell burst through and straight into her. Charlotte doubled over in laughter as the tickling charm went over her whole body. Even through the tickling Charlotte couldn't help but notice a small smile that crept onto Jack's face. She then heard Jack say, "Finite Incantatem," and the tickling stopped.
"Alright, let's do it," Jack said, motioning the kids to get into groups.

Jack walked down the stairs from his office and into the classroom. This was not his favorite lesson to teach. Most especially since Eric had started working here, and even more especially, that it lined up this year with the week of the full moon. He sighed, and reaching the chalkboard, wrote the word ‘Werewolves’ across the top. Obviously, it was an important topic to discuss, but he couldn’t help but feel like every time he was giving these step by step instructions to figure out that they had a teacher who was a werewolf. Eric seemed not to care much, and Jack knew a handful of students were aware he was a werewolf already, so ultimately it didn’t matter. Jack’s hesitation was probably more to do with upbringing than anything else. When he was growing up, open support for werewolves was just becoming a thing in America and there were plenty of people who still held prejudice against them. It wasn’t long before he was drawn from his thoughts by the presence of students entering the classroom. He did his best to wipe away any concerns and put on a gentle smile for his students.
He let the clock move to the start of class time, then gave another two minutes just to be safe. Once everyone was at their desks and sorted he began. “Alright. Today, we’re discussing werewolves. Please open your books to page 394.” He waited a moment before starting. “Let’s get through the basics first shall we. Lycanthropy is a magical illness that causes one to someone to involuntarily transform into a werewolf involuntarily each month at the full moon. Lycanthropy is passed through infected saliva or blood entering the victim’s bloodstream, typically from a bite. Werewolf attacks can be deadly, especially to muggles.” Jack was always fascinated by the subtle biological differences between muggles and wizards.“If you ever come across a werewolf attack, the best chance of survival is sealing the wounds with dittany and silver.” He shifted his weight slightly. “There’s no cure for lycanthropy, but the potion Wolfsbane allows werewolves to maintain their mind during a transformation if taken properly. The taste is apparently terrible, and unfortunately, adding something like sugar makes it useless.” He glanced at each of the students. “Now that we’ve gone through all the boring facts and figures, on to the assignment. First, I’ll have you write a paragraph or two about either ways to spot a werewolf, how to differentiate them from regular wolves or animagi, or some mixture of both. Then, on the worksheet, there is a list of true or false questions about werewolves for you to answer. While it’s of course important to know how to spot and protect yourself from werewolves, it’s also important to realize that lycanthropy, in all practical terms, is a disability, a disease. Werewolves aren’t some great evil. They are people who were often viciously attacked, who now have to deal with stigma through absolutely no fault of their own. It absolutely poses a danger, but that’s not their fault.”
He stepped back to his desk and, with a flick of his wand, the worksheets moved from his desk and gently floated to each student’s desk. “If you have any questions, please ask. I’m more than happy to help.”
Quote: 1. Lycanthropy can be passed genetically 2. Lycanthropy changes someone’s personality (while not transformed) 3. Dittany can be used to seal wounds from a werewolf 4. Muggles can be werewolves 5. You can add sugar to wolfsbane to make it more palatable 6. The homorphus charm temporarily turns a werewolf back to human form 7. The homorphus charm can cure lycanthropy 8. Silver bullets can kill werewolves 9. Animagi can’t be infected with lycanthropy 10. A werewolf can infect someone with full lycanthropy while not transformed
