His birthday passed quietly, just as he liked it. No fanfare, no party, nothing really other than some well wishes and the random present from mostly his family. Nothing shocking or overly surprising. Standard fare really. So why did he feel a little disappointed? It wasn’t like he wanted a party. He sure didn’t want anything egregiously large. But it was his 35th. It was a ‘big one’ if some were to be believed.

Not really sure how to sort out his feelings of general sadness, honestly he figured a lot of it was just from work, he went out patrolling. After a good hour and a half of seeing nothing but the random drunk or late night worker Tortuga ended up just strolling into a random park. Maybe he would encounter someone who at least would require him to stop thinking about how damn old he was getting.

Quote:
Palmyra was out patrolling on his own, as most of his family was busy, but someone should go out. He knew Maia would frown at him going out alone wanting them to go in pairs for safety. He felt confident enough in his skill that one night … or more … out alone wasn't going to end him.

He felt another signature and it was a pretty quiet night, so he decided to head toward it. He honestly had nothing better to do and wandering around only felt productive for so long.

Quote:
Tortuga had decided to ‘practice’ some when the walk got a bit tedious. He had set up a few cans at various distances and was currently sending the zap of electricity he had been granted via the ring he was given to the cans. He was watching the cans rock from the shock when a faint, but ‘orderly’ aura mentally pinged for him. Someone was coming. Someone from his side of the war. It would be a nice change of pace really since he seemed to be encountering more violent people lately. That or there was something in the air that was messing with the mind… probably both really. The Squire stood up and turned towards the approaching aura. Once he physically spotted the knight, Tortuga waved. He didn’t call out until they were much closer, and he could make them out a lot clearer. “Evening. What brings you out tonight?”

Quote:
Palmyra raised a brow at the question and shook his head, “patrolling, is that not what we are supposed to be doing? Patrolling, training, defeating the negaverse? If that's not the case then I have a few words for little Miss Maia.” He chuckled because he trusted the woman, and her brother, having done this far longer than he did but the question was a bit silly.

“No, but seriously I felt you in the area and it has been a pretty quiet night. I've also been warned to try not to patrol alone if it can be helped, so it's probably best to try to make a few more allies.”

Quote:
“If you want to pick that fight with Maia let me know so I can watch you get your a** kicked,” Tortuga grinned. He had a pretty good idea what would happen in that case, he had tasted the mat quite a bit while sparring with his Feisty cousin. He didn’t think this knight would be any different. He kind of got tired of getting his a** kicked that’s for sure.

“Fair enough, going in a group is normally the best policy. I’m Tortuga of Jupiter by the way.” The redhead introduced himself. He actually rarely went out patrolling in pairs let alone with anyone else but a lot of that was his general mental state. Subjecting anyone else to his dark thoughts wasn’t exactly what he would call a good idea. “You're welcome to stick around. I was mostly just messing around with a little trick I picked up some years ago.”

Quote:
Palm laughed and shook his head, “awww shes a tough cookie, but she’s not that bad, fun even.” He had to admit, he like sparring with Maia. “You are more than welcome to watch though.” He chuckled and nodded when Tortuga introduced himself. “I'm Palmrya of Castor. Nice to meet you and don't let me stop you. I haven't got any tricks yet. Hell my weapon,” he said giving air quotes with the word weapon, “is still at the useless stage, but Shang said it will get a little better when I'm a squire.”

He stood to the side to give Tortuga some space. “For now I can fight well enough, so I'm fine.”

Quote:
“I’m guessing you haven’t eaten dirt often enough then,” Tortuga eyed his unexpected companion, absently shrugging away the concern over the knight weapons, “Mine is a whistle. Not much use outside of messing with someone’s eardrums but Shang is right. Once you hit squire you get some type of magic. I haven't really found a very good use of mine since it just obscures the ground in fog but I bet it could cause an issue if implemented correctly.” The squire was honestly hoping that hitting full Knight like his cousin would give him more of an edge when it came to fighting rather than ground coverage.

Tortuga just shrugged and asked “would you like to spar some? Just messing around with the ring isn’t really doing much other than reinforcing my information on the distance and timing and the like. Yeah ‘practice makes perfect’ and all that but still…” He trailed off and raised a brow. “You up for it?” It would pass the time that's for sure. Besides, maybe he can show the page a trick or two that Maia or Shang hadn’t. Unlikely, he knew, but still. It was possible… ish.

Quote:
“Oh trust me, I have. You haven’t met my brother, Halicarnassus. He’s an MMA fighter and he taught me how to fight, not only that he’s quiet a bit older, so he doled out a lot of discipline. I've eaten my fair share of dirt. She out classes us, but where training is concerned its the opposite.”

Palm was intrigued by the effect the whistle had and raised an eyebrow when Tortuga was concerned about the effect, “that is actually advantageous as it will help hide your foot movement. It would be easier to feint, though it doesn't hide your whole body, still it will make it a little harder to predict you movements.”

“I’m down for a bit of sparring, practice your magic too and practice handling such an unpredictable element.”

Quote:
“Hmmm, might be worth seeing if he could or would teach me a few tricks too. I’ve found it's always a good idea to have some unexpected moves in the back pocket.” It might have saved him some pain over the years if he had. He still was more a healer than anything else, and a brawler after that. No real specific style for him. Just punch it until it goes away. He just happened to know some of the best spots to hit to really hurt someone, the benefits of being an EMT.

As for his magic, he just shrugged and quipped, “One would think…. But no, not really.” He figured it would just be easier to show the page so he pulled out his simple brass bosun whistle where it had been tucked into his collar and gave it a quick blow. The sharp, almost ear splitting sound, wasn’t the most surprising thing. It was the fog that rapidly formed around him. He was able to keep focus as he ran towards the Page, going for a ‘punch’ to the other male’s midsection. He knew he was good up to that point, but he also knew that the minute he had to concentrate on the ‘fight’ he would lose the hold he had on the magic. At that point the fog would dissipate.

((The whistle has gotten powers now and with a short burst of sound, fog begins to form. The generated fog is around a foot to a food and a half deep on the ground and obscures everything in it for around 10 feet diameter. It does no active harm to anyone but it can hide any type of trap that others can come up with from holes to magic. When one moves in it, you create a wake and can briefly see the ground before the fog once more hides it. A strong wind or a magical disturbance can help completely dissipate the fog. Tortuga must keep his concentration or the fog will fade away however the fog will dissipate naturally after 45 seconds total in a whole battle.))

Quote:
Palm was amused to see Tortuga get right into calling his magic and Palm was amazed by it. The fog was half way up his calf and he couldnt see his own feet, but since he was looking down it gave him a small warning when Tortuga moved to throw his punch, the fog swirling, Palm turning out to avoid it.

“This is awesome, can you make it thicker? If so that would be great for hindering movement.”

He ducked low and made to uppercut Tortuga trying to be precise and mindful that the fog was going to give away his movement even if it hid his feet.

Quote:
Tortuga stumbled a bit when his punch didn’t connect but that was enough for him to spot the uppercut and twist just enough for the strike to graze his arm instead. This of course had the fog dissipate since the stumble had broken his concentration. “Nope. Biggest issue is the focus required.” He backed off far enough before blowing on his whistle once again, but this time he dropped to the ground, easily disappearing underneath the fog. He wouldn’t be able to move really since it would make the ground coverage disappear but he could shift slightly. He had found that out after much trial and error. But he wasn’t doing that this time. Oh no. This time he used his ring’s power.

With a grin that no one could see he pressed the golden band into the ground and sent the spark of power to strike Palm. Tortuga knew it wouldn’t do much. It was a static electric shock, but it could still be annoying as ********.

((The stone in this ring is a vivid, bright yellow and the ring grants the spark of Electricity. When the ring is equipped, the wearer can be in any form and will have the passive ability to function as a small emergency battery that has an undying charge. When wielded it is just strong enough to recharge a phone or other small electronic. It is not strong enough to short circuit anything or cause damage. Its true power shines while in powered form, though! Striking any inorganic surface with the ring will send an electrical charge through it up to ten feet away. The spark is just enough to startle the first person it reaches but it is not strong enough to cause any lasting damage. The target may feel a tingling sensation but all symptoms should fade within thirty seconds. While there is no limit to how many times the ring can be used, only one spark can be released at a time. The ring cannot be used directly on any organic material.))

Quote:
Palm frowned at the fact that lost the magic so easily, he really needed to improve his focus. The magic was useless if he couldn’t hold it, still when he dropped into the fog it did cover him completely. It didn't take Palm long to figure out his disadvantage though as the fog swirled when he moved. Tortuga would be able to go anywhere and Palm knew right where he was, so he headed right for him. He had the advantage currently that Tortuga being in the fog wouldnt see him until he was right on top of him.

He wasn't stupid enough not to realize the squire was clearly up to something, but he had to risk it. He felt the shock tensing and groaning, but it wasn't too bad, more than anything it was annoying if this wasn't just a spare Palm would be a little ticked.

He darted forward the fog clearing as he moved, and as soon as he saw Tortuga he swung to kick the other in the side. “Cheap trick Tortuga, gonna need to be a little stronger.”

Quote:
Tortuga smiled up at his current sparring partner, the smile wavered a bit when he got kicked in the side but all the knight did was clamp down and hold the foot in place. Practically pinning the other male in place. “Ah…. but you see… unlike my fog, this thing isn’t limited to time.” His fog really had dissipated, either because he once again lost focus on it or because the time ran out. Either way Tortuga wasn’t overly concerned since all he did was place his free hand down against the ground again. The free hand with the ring.

He sent pulse after pulse of power through the ground to strike his ‘opponent’. It was in a wave, a rhythm really. Like a heartbeat. Tortuga had spent quite a while working out the limits of the little trinket and found that he could only send one ‘spark’ out at a time. The further away the target was the longer it took to fire off another one. But when the target was close…. Like right on top of him. The time it took was much, much shorter.

Quote:
Palm hadn't thought Tortuga would grab onto him and start pumping him full of electricity. He had a large metal piece around his waist and metal on the shoulder, so it helped to make the shocks stronger. The shocks coming in pulses felt irritatingly jumpy and he was less than pleased with Tortuga.

He didn't particularly find this little experience funny and all Palm thought about was getting Tortuga off of him. He lifted his free leg despite the shock and stomped down on Tortugas arm, before kicking him in the side again.

“Dude let go, I've got hella metal on me.” Palm was pretty done with this sparring and willing too admit, he might have underestimated Tortuga a little bit.

Quote:
Tortuga wasn’t planning on shocking him more than a half dozen times. Nothing all that much. Nor real overkill. Just enough to prove a point but that plan went out the window with Palm’s reaction. The squire hissed at the arm stomp, instantly letting the page go and twisting to get away, getting clipped by the second kick. “s**t man. Alright, alright. Point made.” He disengaged from the other knight, cradling his arm against him. He didn’t think it was broken or anything but Tortuga knew he would have one hell of a wicked bruise forming.

He hadn’t gotten up so he could only look up from the ground, at least he was sitting now rather than laying in the grass. “Ah, sorry. I didn’t know it would react to the metal. Sorry about that.” The apology could have been done better but well… it seemed like they were both a little sore now.

Quote:
[colo=#45818e]Palm sighed in relief when Tortuga let go and gave him a sheepish look, “sorry. I didn’t mean to stomp so hard, but that was painful. Try to remember for next time metal conducts electricity.” He frowned at his shoes, what he wouldn't was give for tennis and good old rubber soles. The shock wouldn't do much if he had rubber soles.

“That was good though, definitely the shock is a bit more useful than the fog, especially should you send it through a weapon, maybe Shang will let you test in on his staff.” It was a suggestion, better to test the theory outside of battle. “I should probably continue patrolling. Got to get back home to my wife. Want to join me, Im sure you know how Maia can be about patrolling alone.”

Quote:
“Yeah, I should have figured.” He climbed to his feet, being careful of his arm, “It's cool. I kind of deserved it. Hell, we all learned about how metal conducts electricity in school. Don’t know why I didn’t really think the ring would cause the same issue.” He shrugged. Tortuga’s only excuse was that ‘magic’ and it was a lame a** excuse as it was.

He was going to say something smartass-ish about using weapons, or maybe just to refute the idea, but as he thought about it he couldn’t. It was a good idea. A damn good idea. One he wished he had thought of actually. “Uh, yeah, sure.” He was still a bit dazed from the thought of using his ring on a weapon. He ‘snapped’ back when the page mentioned Maia. “Oh yeah, I got my a** chewed out for that, a time or two.” Tortuga shrugged and started to head off into the darkness with Palm, “It was a valid scolding but still, would rather not repeat it.” What Maia didn’t know wouldn’t hurt him.
