The Glass Blowing Class (7): Were you captivated and inspired by the art you saw already? A complimentary glass blowing workshop has been offered by some local artisans. Located next door to the Crystal Heart Gallery, if you have a ticket stub from the event you can stop by to partake in one of their classes, where they’ll teach you how to make a glass blown ornament/bauble, a wine glass, or a set of glass beads. All classes are beginner friendly and you will be gently guided through the process. You keep what you make, and you’re encouraged to bring a friend! Classes are hosted every hour on the hour.

“Leah! Look!” Abby pointed over to the sign that directed people to the glass blowing workshop that was being offered next door. It had been several hours and they had seen every table, booth, and art piece. Or at least that's what it seemed like. “Do you want to do that before calling it a day? Or do you want to go back and check out the local wares again?” She honestly wouldn’t mind doing either, just not the buffet again. She was still overly full from the last time she just ‘passed through to see if anything new was added’.

But the glass blowing seemed interesting and it would be pretty neat to do. It was definitely better for her wallet since that was severely impacted after poking through the stalls in the local venders section. At least she had gifts for a bunch of people now! She wouldn’t have to do any gift shopping for a little bit at least. “What do you want to do?” Abby asked her friend.

Leah looked at the glassblowing class advertisement and while she wasnt particularly interested in learning glass blowing , all the glass art was amazing so she nodded, happy to be dragged about by her friend. Life was just too short to miss out on anything. “I'm okay with doing the glassblowing, who knows maybe we will make something cool.

Leah didn't think they would honestly be allowed to do some parts of the process for safety's sake, but she hoped to make something colorful even if it was small.

“What do you think about trying to make glass ornaments, something like a suncatcher? Let's go ask.”

“Lets,” Abby happily exited the event hall and followed the directions over to the other building where the first thing she really noticed was the heat. The hall had been warm, a bit too warm honestly, but this space was practically hot, and she was only at the front door. They were greeted by a worker and soon both young women were signed up to try the glass blowing. Right now they were perusing the options of what they could do. “I don’t know Leah. They are all so neat looking.”

Abby hummed over the glass bauble but she didn’t really see any use of it besides a holiday ornament. The flowers were neat but weren’t ‘blown’ just pulled. So were the suncatchers. The paperweight was neat looking though. Like a heavy bottomed bubble. There were also bigger items for sale like fruits and cups and such. “I think I might go for either the suncatcher or the paperweight. I think my father would like it. What about you?”

Leah followed Abby looking over the selection of goods for them to choose from. She didn’t really need to look too long though, she saw the suncatcher and knew she wanted to make it for the twins room. She might have to come back before the event was up and look to see if they were selling more so she got one for all the kids. She certainly had enough babysitting funds, especially from times when she had to watch Lu, Lyle or Silas. Those three could be a handful.

“I'm definitely going to make a suncatcher. I’ll make it rainbow for the twins room. They’ll be here in just a couple months. I'm excited because everyone mostly has boys and the family needs more little girls, but my generation and the generation after is mostly boys. I bet you dad will like either for his office though.”

“Oh that would be so cute,” Abby absolutely agreed with her friend. The idea of making a little suncatcher for the twins was a good one. “I have a feeling those girls will have the worst time when it comes time for dating.” She chuckled, remembering her own father’s reaction the first time she brought a boy home. Heck, even Sherlock wasn’t happy about the ‘invader’. Since the boy had turned out to be a jerk… she kind of wished the dog had done a bit more than just scare the bloody rat.

The young woman hemmed and hawed a bit more before settling on the paperweight. “I know dad would love either or but I have a feeling he would be less likely to break a paperweight. And he always grumbles when his papers go flying in his office when he leaves his windows open.” She snickered. It was a good thing too since it was their turn next. Soon they were each working with skilled craftspeople, Abby was carefully following the instructions she was given. The molten glass forming a swirling, twirling, vortex of color suspended in a blob of clear glass

It didn’t take nearly as long as she thought it would have. Soon the ball was in the annealing oven to cool down… or something like that. It was explained to her but she didn’t quite understand it. The only thing she could come up with was how pottery took several firings to make. Apparently glass wasn’t quite as simple as it seemed. She would have to come back in a day or two to get her paperweight. Ah well… shame really but then again, maybe she could get another go when she came back to pick up her gift.

{{to properly anneal glass, you need to hold the glass at the annealing temperature (lets say 950F) for a minimum of 15 minutes for each 1/4 inch of thickness. this is due to the fact that glass is an insulator and does not give up its internally stored heat easily.

She hadn't realized that a suncatcher was a part of the selection for what they were allowed to make and just a part of the display. Still she could purchase them and she intended to the next time she came to the event. She decided to make a wine glass for her mother. She smiled at her best friend having decided on a paper weight and watched her friend go first clearly enjoying herself. She smirked because her friend was clearly having a good time. It had been a good day.

After a little bit she worked with one of the teachers to make her wine glass, following the directions and carefully trying to perfect her wine glass. She needed quite a bit of help with the shaping, but that was to be expected and soon she had a wine glass, with swirling colors of red and blue. She grinned at Abby showing off the glass before it went into the annealing oven to cool down. It sucked she couldn’t take it home, but she definitely understood.

Heading over to Abby, she stretched, “well that's an experience. Let’s go grab some dinner before we head home. I think I worked up an appetite again.” She chuckled, leading her friend out of the workshop.

“I think I want to come back again another day, we didn't really get to do any shopping and I want to buy some suncatchers since I couldn't make one.” She was fine with her friend not wanting to join her if she wasn't interested but she’d be coming back for sure.

”Sure! Lead the way,” Abby followed after her friend. She was more than willing to get some dinner.

Today really had been a good break from her normal schedule. She was glad her friend was able to convince her to come.
