The air within the ornate healing hall hummed with a subtle tension, a blend of anticipation and curiosity as healers from different regions of Yael gathered for a summit. Jongsu had taken him along, as he did every year, so that the healers from all around could share knowledge, techniques, and collaborate on projects. Jianyu was possibly looking for another master in another region so he could continue his studies. Jongsu had thought it was a great idea and a good time to do so. He’d even promised Jianyu that he’d speak to a few of his old colleagues to see who could take Jianyu.

Jianyu, was dressed in his finest traditional healer attire adorned with symbols of herbalism and healing. He’d wanted to impress while he was here after all. His eyes, observant and judgemental, scanned the crowd, acknowledging the array of unique healing traditions present in the hall. Some of the older Yaeli had ventured out and returned with new knowledge and ways of doing things. It was truly interesting to watch it all and take it in. He would take great care to visit every stand and attend as many classes as he could while here. This only happened once a year after all.

As the fragrance of diverse healing herbs permeated the hall, Jianyu's calm exterior masked an eagerness to delve into all of the healing traditions. For some the summit offered an opportunity for collaboration, a chance to overcome cultural differences in pursuit of a shared goal – the greater good of those in need. Jianyu wasn’t one of those, he often ignored and sidestepped anything that had to do with Mainlanders. What they knew, a Yaeli could just as well teach so there was no use listening to them.

Between waiting for another class, he was perusing a stand of some herbs. They had been collected from the fish people who dwelled below the water. It was interesting since Jianyu had never seen anything like it before.

“Isn’t this just amazing?” Jianyu said to another healer next to him. He was holding up a small vial with one of the underwater plants.

Beowulf wasn't dressed as flashy as the rest of the people that gathered for the summit, really he was the least fashionable there. Dressed in just a green shirt and brown pants, his half moon glasses hung low on his nose as he set off to one side. There were many people here and the noise was something to be desired. With his thick tome propped up on a knee, he looked out over those around.

"A meeting of the minds this is." He uttered to himself beneath the din of other conversation.

His own teacher was absent from this gathering, being that she was caring for someone back home. Oh she wanted to come, but she couldn't leave her patient alone without due care. So she sent Beowulf off in her sted. Running a hand through his hair, Beowulf closed his book with a heavy thud before pulling himself to his feet and headed over towards displays of items from other lands.

Stepping over beside another Yaeli, he looked at the vial that they were holding as they seemed to speak. "I read somewhere that binding something like that to a wound can keep it dry underwater." He commented back, was he right? Who knew, it was something he had read in one of the books that his teacher had.

Amidst the sea of flamboyant attire, Beowulf stood as a stark contrast, dressed in simple greens and browns. Jianyu wondered why he was dressed as he was, this was a time to make a good impression after all! Surely his master would have said something to him unless they weren’t here with him. It wasn’t uncommon of course, for masters to stay behind, but he would have thought then that they’d want proper representation on behalf of their students.

Jianyu acknowledged the Yaeli's comment with a thoughtful nod, ignoring his attire. “Your observation about the plant holds merit. A useful application, especially in lands where bodies of water are an integral part of the environment." And it would be just as useful here as well, especially for those who lived closer to the sea and worked across and within the waters. He was going to have to make sure he spoke to Jongo about perhaps acquiring a bit of it in case they needed it.

Jianyu's gaze shifted to the vial, appreciating the plant within and the potential applications of such practical knowledge. Then he turned towards the healer. "Are you here on behalf of your teacher, then?" he inquired.

Beowulf had wandered a short distance off as he was looking at batches of dried herbs. Some being crushed under a grindstone. Others tied tightly in bunches, even the still fresh clippings. He turned his head a little to look back towards the healer that he had spoken to just before, seems that they did have an agreement. The herbs and plants presented would hold great use to the many in all lands. The talk turned to him being here on behalf of his teacher. Sure, one could say that.

"She made the suggestion to come here and see what others have to offer." Beowulf said with a small shrug, "If I had known these was going to be such finery, I might have dressed a little better. But some of us don't have the means of fine clothing."

He looked around at the older scholars and healers that wandered around. Beowulf was like a puddle of mud in the midst of a very clean paved road. But this mattered not to him, he had other things to use his coin on then clothing that was to get filthy the first shout of healing needs. Turning back to the table, he absently pulled at the soft wood rosary that he had been given by those of the Sanctum. He still didn't know their reasons, but it was something he carried and kept close.

Jianyu observed Beowulf from a distance, his attention drawn to the peculiar sight of the other young Yaeli amidst the collection of herbs. He observed the genuine practicality in Beowulf's clothing. As Beowulf commented on his attire, Jianyu couldn't help but smile subtly, appreciating the young healer's authenticity amidst the more refined surroundings. Everyone here was trying to impress someone else, tried to be the best… It was all for show, of course, flashy birds. But it was tradition and Jianyu was all for that which was traditional. He didn’t like breaking rules and if this was the rule, then he would follow it. He expected others to do the same.

"I hear you," Jianyu replied, his gaze sweeping across the scholars and healers bustling around them. "Appearances matter less than the genuine purpose we bring to events like these." This much he had to admit.

Jianyu continued to observe as Beowulf examined the herbs, his fingers absentmindedly playing with a soft wood rosary. His eyes lingered on the symbol, and he couldn't help but ask, "What's the story behind the rosary?" He hadn’t meant to ask it like that, but a rosary wasn’t something he saw very often. At least not with healers.

Beowulf had picked up a dried batch of herbs before he looked back towards the healer he was speaking to. After a moment of silence he placed the batch back down and pulled his tome into his hands and opened it to a clean page. Though he did flip through a few pages that had other herbs, some of scenes of wilderness, even the large Red Vryhx was illustrated within.

"This is really the first of these events that I have been sent to. I am still young to this line of work." He said picking up a thinly sharpened piece of charcoal and started sketching some of the herbs into his book. "Seeing herbs and other methods of healing from the mainland and other isles are interesting."

At this time, the rosary laid against his shirt, when focus was laid upon it he looked at the light colored beaded thing. The simple symbol that he had applied a small stone to the center of. "This? It was given to me by those of the Sanctum. I joined a few adventurers to investigating the lair of a Red Vryhx. I know not the reason that I was given such an item, but I carry it to someday find answers."

Jianyu watched Beowulf as the other healer picked up a dried batch of herbs and then riffled through his notebook, his attention momentarily diverting before returning to the conversation at hand. He too though was curious about the notebook, it looked like he too enjoyed sketching things. Jianyu even leaned in a bit to get a better look at the illustrations, he had to admit he was impressed! He wanted to compare notes and drawings with the other healer. He’d mentioned being young to the craft, but he seemed very devoted to his work. Jianyu could appreciate that deeply.

"It's fascinating to see how different cultures approach healing," Jianyu remarked, his tone thoughtful. "Perhaps one day, you'll uncover the answers you seek." He murmured, his interest for the rosary gone now that he was focused on the drawings. “Those are really good drawings, can I see the Vryhx?” He’d seen it in passing.

Jianyu reached into his satchel and retrieved his own weathered journal, its pages filled with sketches and notes from his observations.

"I must admit, I share your fascination with collecting information and illustrations," Jianyu remarked, a hint of excitement creeping into his voice. "In fact, I've been documenting my own findings in this journal for quite some time." Jianyu flipped through the pages of his journal, revealing a treasure trove of illustrations and descriptions of various herbs and healing practices he had encountered.

"I’d love to compare illustrations with you, if you're willing," Jianyu offered, extending his journal towards Beowulf with a warm smile. "Perhaps we can learn from each other's experiences."

Beowulf looked up from the sketch that he had started of the batch of dried herbs, small notes here and there of the parts of the plants and what they could be used for. He had taken note of the other healer leaning in closer to look over his shoulder at his book. There wasn't much special about the leather bound volume. It was rather thick and the covers were made of a very stiff leather, perhaps even something that was bound in leather with a clasp to help keep it closed. Stopping what he was doing he looked back at the healer.

"This? It's not one of my best sketches. Kind of did it while traveling, some roads aren't as smooth as others." he says as he turned to the pages that held the sketch of the red Vryhx. The red colored pigments were bright against the rough pages. There were small notations around the drawing explaining small things. Like its habitat, attacks it had shown in this fight against it.

"The fight with this beast was a rough one. I wish I had been more helpful to my team mates, but we managed to get out of there alive. Sadly all the treasure that was in the lair was lost in the final explosion." Beowulf explained as he turned to the pages of the spewing volcano that had been the beast's home. "The rewards from the task were generous, though some might have found some a little silly." He recounted as several had shoved candles into his hands as they left.

Shaking his head he looked at the book Jianyu had pulled from his own bag. It seemed that he wasn't the only one? This caused some excitement to enter even Beofulf's eyes. "Sure, but I have a feeling you have seen more than I have. I haven't really left the Island that much." He grimaced remembering the boat ride to and from Yael. "Name's Beowolf." He grinned, holding out a hand in greeting, even though they had been talking for a bit of time.

Jianyu listened intently as Beowulf shared his experiences, nodding in understanding as he flipped through the pages of his own book. He couldn't help but admire the sketches and the meticulous notes accompanying them, recognizing the dedication it took to document such encounters. He recognized a deep kinship with Beowulf, not just because they were both Yaeli but because they shared a similar love for healing and oddly enough even similar hobbies.

"Your sketches are impressive, even if you think this one isn't your best," Jianyu replied with a smile, glancing at the drawing of the red Vryhx. "Surviving a rough encounter like that is an accomplishment in itself. How did you encounter the red Vryhx anyway?" He’d never had anything that impressive happen to him, he was genuinely curious of Beowulf’s experience.

As Beowulf mentioned his limited travels beyond the island, Jianyu shook his head slightly. "You're not alone in that regard. I, too, haven't ventured far from the island," he admitted, recalling his discomfort with other races.

Jianyu returned Beowulf's grin, clasping his hand firmly in greeting. "Jianyu," he introduced himself. "It’s nice to meet you. Mind if I join you for a bit?" Jianyu was not the kind of person to make friends, but Beowulf seemed to tick a lot of his friends' check marks. It was refreshing and he didn’t want to part ways quite yet.

"It is nice to meet you too Jianyu, you can join me. I am here alone and not quite the social butterfly that I was in my younger days." He chuckled before releasing Jianyu's hand.

"I encountered the red beast when I joined up with a small adventurer group. The Sanctum had put out word that they were going to investigate the volcano. So I though, what the heck, might as well go and see what was happening. I helped aid the mainlanders that made up the most of the group." He said as he fished around in his bag for something. "It was there I was given the Rosary as well as one of these, though most the adventurers gave me theirs." he pulled out one of the stout light lavender candles with the mark of Lurin etched into the wax. "It was a fair interesting encounter. Though a brutal one. We're not even sure of we actually defeated the Vryhx or it just escaped to appear somewhere else."

A shudder did roll through Beowulf at the thought of the explosion that had knocked him and other down. For a moment in that instance he had thought he would have met his makers, but thankfully the other healer of the group was able to help heal everyone. They all managed to escape the cavern with their lives and receive rewards for their troubles and near death experiences.

"I have yet to ask anyone from the Sanctum why I was given the rosary. I am sure I will find out someday, but as it is, I carry it as well as one of the candles where ever I go. Who knows when you need to calm someone's emotions." Beowulf grinned a little. "But enough about me, have you had any adventures?" He wondered, curiously, surely he wasn't the only one here that has seen things that would make others curious.

“Not a problem, I don’t like to hear myself talk like some of these other healers.” He said with a small chuckle. He swore that some of the healers just liked to hear the sound of their voices or liked to nose around as to what the others were doing. Some of them were really into gossip and he tended to avoid them.

Jianyu listened intently as Beowulf recounted his encounter with the red beast and his adventures with the adventurer group. He couldn't help but admire Beowulf's bravery in facing such dangers, there was no way he’d ever be caught dead doing something like that. He liked his little village life with his usual patience and nothing extraordinary. He didn’t think he’d ever leave the village if he could help it much less Yaeli.

"That sounds like quite the harrowing experience," Jianyu commented, his tone filled with genuine interest. "It's remarkable how you managed to overcome such challenges. And the rosary and candle seem like invaluable treasures, indeed."

As Beowulf shifted the conversation to Jianyu's own adventures, a small frown touched Jianyu's head. "I've never left the village," he admitted, feeling the littlest bit embarrassed. He had no stories to share, no great adventures to retell with vigour. “My journey has been around my village and the things I can discover around it.” He dared not talk about his dislike for mainlanders, though truth be told he was just afraid of the unknown.

“Does that make me boring?” Jianyu asked half in jest.

Beowulf gave a dismissive wave as if what he did wasn't anything that spectacular. Sure he went up against something on the range of a dragon and survived, had thing been different he probably wouldn't have. "I went mostly to investigate what was going on like those from the Sanctum. I didn't expect to be pulled in, I was just going to watch the Vryhx, make notes of its habits and stuff. But it attacked and the others attacked it back." He was a bit sad that he couldn't have done more research while the beast was there, but someday he may have another chance.

"The rosary is a treasure for sure. Don't even know anyone else that has received one from them." To this he shrugged before moving away from the table that they were still standing near. "Not all that boring. I still live outside my own village. Found out that I don't like crossing the seas on boats." He chuckled a little. "I was sick the whole way to Matori and back. Swore I would never step onto another ship again."

Beowulf moved off to the side where there were some small tables to sit at. It was here he laid his book down on said table. The crowds around the tables and displays were getting thicker and he wanted to wait for the throngs to thin again before heading back over.

"Someday I might get up the courage to travel to the mainland again. Just not any time soon."

Jianyu listened to Beowulf, his respect for the other healer growing with each word. It was clear that Beowulf's actions were more than just those of a casual observer; he had faced danger head-on, showing courage in the face of such danger. Jianyu couldn't help but admire his bravery if only because he would never have been able to do such a thing. He wanted to, he so wanted to be the kind of healer who could just join battle as Beowulf had but he was scared. As much as he hated to admit it, he was far too cozy in his little life on Yaeli, undisturbed by outside forces with nothing happening.

“I don’t know anyone else,” Jianyu admitted quietly as he tried to recall if he’d ever seen any patient with it before. No one came to mind, however. Jianyu followed suit to the table, taking a seat across from him, grateful for the chance to continue their conversation away from the distractions of the market.

"I understand your aversion to sea travel," Jianyu remarked with a sympathetic smile. "The journey can be quite challenging, but you faced a Vryhx and I’m sure you’d be able to take on the sea. Perhaps one day, when the time is right, you'll find yourself ready to venture to the mainland again." Would Jianyu ever leave Yaeli? Probably never.

Beowulf gave a chuckle at the thought of crossing the seas again. Perhaps if there were a way to fly over them. He hadn't ever heard of anyone doing that, he doubted even the most skilled rider could get their mount to cross so much open water and make it to the other side. "When we learn to fly I might go back." He said in jest. "For now I will keep my feet on solid ground. There are still many mysteries here on our homeland that have yet to be found."

One spot he would like to go was the Sanctum to see just what mysteries he could find there. He had seen the building when he traveled with his teacher, but that felt like so long ago now. Glancing over towards the market where the rest of the summit was converging, he was glad to be out of it until the crowds thinned down. As it was he had something to finish within his book, it would have to be done from memory once again.

"So what village do you come from? I live outside the small town of Vares. Small, but it is home." he chuckled turning back to the herb that he had been sketching, wanting to finish it. "I don't know about you, but I am getting a but peckish. Just a few more strokes to this and I think I might head to find something to eat, how about you?" He asked looking towards Jianyu over the tops of his glasses as he dragged the charcoal over the page to finish the last loops to the herb blossom.

“Well the Belreans and Geians do have flying ships,” he said with a laugh. “That’s kind of like flying right?” He’d seen the ships but you wouldn’t find him on one of those either. At least if something happened at sea there was a chance of survival. However, if something happened in the air, there was no saving you.

"I come from Eshen, a city nestled between Vares and Jodove. It's a smaller traditional village. Everyone knows everyone and it’s cozy. We must be close!" Maybe a little too excited to have a healer friend around his age who didn’t live halfway across Yael. That was a fun discovery, if Beowulf wasn’t far then he could visit him from time to time.

He observed Beowulf's sketching, noting the careful attention to detail and the gentle, precise movements of his hands. There was a tranquillity in Beowulf's focus that Jianyu admired—a serene dedication to capturing the essence of the herb before him.

At the mention of food, Jianyu's stomach gave a timely grumble, betraying his growing hunger. He laughed softly, a warm sound. He was in high spirits. "I'm with you on that. The prospect of food sounds more appealing by the minute. Let's set off then. Between bites, you need to share more about the mysteries you seek."
