Prompt 12 (Cold Blooded): Pearly white snow is a common sight in Destiny City, so seeing, ivory lumps around the city really isn’t so strange. Until they move. The ones the size of an iguana, or the mountains of small, gecko-like lizards that travel together, probably aren’t that intimidating. The ones the size of a komodo dragon? Those are scary. Though they range in size, they have a few things in common: sharp nails that let them climb up nearly any surface, sharp teeth that feel like being gnawed on by icicles, and scales so cold that it feels like being freezer-burned. All lizards seem to like sleeping in the snow, but the larger they are, the more solitary they travel. It isn’t uncommon to see one very large lizard, a handful of iguana-sized lizards, or two or three dozens (or more!) smaller lizards in a single grouping. They seem to mind their own business unless they are hungry, or if you get too close. It’s just, it’s hard to avoid them when they look just like snow--or when they fall out of trees on top of you? These lizards love the snow, and they love chewing on people, too. Whether it’s out of hunger or agitation, if you make the mistake of getting too close to one, they will attack–even if unprovoked. They’re fast. They’re vicious. They have a strange habit of disappearing mid battle with a camouflage you just cannot detect. It’s impossible to kill or capture one, and strangely enough there doesn’t seem to be any reports of these lizards anywhere. They seem like ordinary lizards, just very cold blooded. They don’t have an aura or seem to be magical, but something just isn’t adding up here, anyway.
Note: The lizard is not a youma but can be used as a battle requirement for a character. It can only be used as a battle if there are two powered characters involved; you cannot write a solo and count this as a battle, and your character must be powered to meet battle requirements. You can use the prompt for as many characters as you like and it will count as a battle requirement, however if you repeat the prompt with the same character, only the first time will be usable as a battle.

It was almost too cold to be out, powered up and doing Dark Mirror things. They had the time to try and gather a bit of energy, and when they finished up that then they could go hang out in Mirrorspace for a while, and then finally head home. It was a loose plan, they were sort of playing it by ear.

The important thing was that they were together.

Earlier tonight, they’d been quite fortuitous in their energy gathering, and it was honestly a bit impressive that they hadn’t been caught hiding in the alley while their wraiths darted in and out of drunkards as they stumbled out of the bar. It hardly felt like they’d even done any work at all, between their whispered conversations and teasing and maybe the fifteen minute break they’d taken to just kiss, but it was a slow moment.

He’d lost count of how many wraiths had come and gone, but certainly Remarque would be proud of them, and Mirrorspace too.

They were in the park now, getting some fresh air and stretching their legs. They were mostly on their way home, maybe looking for a little extra energy to grab on their way home. It was going to be too cold in the upcoming days. They might have been dedicated to the Dark Mirror Court but they could not afford getting sick–or, worse–going to the doctor. Not like Orien would probably even go, but.

His fingers were laced with Orien’s and he swung their hands as they walked. The snow crunched beneath their footsteps. Most of the park had been well trudged through, but they found a path that was still fresh and untouched.

…Probably for a reason, but they had no way to know.

In the distance, one of the snow banks shifted. It made a strange thumping noise that made Kaelan bristle. He heard something, he just hadn’t seen it.

…He already had an overactive imagination, so it didn’t really bode well for him. He squeezed Orien’s hand a little tighter. “You know, it’s beautiful out here, but if you weren’t here with me I think I’d only be able to see how creepy it is.”

He spoke with a soft voice, softer than he meant, and kept his eyes on the snow banks around them. He couldn’t exactly place what had made him feel so unnerved, but the hair on the back of his neck was standing on end so he wasn't going to let his guard down.

He knew he was paranoid, more often than not, but something had moved out here. And he couldn’t tell what.

Arawn was in a good mood. Kissing certainly helped. And being with Laon always made him feel calm. So calm that he was even smiling as they swung their hands together as they walked through the snow. He definitely wanted to make sure Laon’s hands didn’t get too cold. They would have to figure out some ways to warm up once they got home.

As if he didn’t already have plans.

But he heard the sound that made Laon bristle. His memory might have been bad, but his hearing was impeccable. According to him.

He was quiet as Laon spoke, his eyes trained towards the snow, trying to determine where the noise came from, and why it was raising the hair on the back of his neck.

Arawn could tell that Laon was agitated as well. He didn’t like anything making Laon anxious or worried.

He kept his hand around Laon’s, but a low growl escaped from the back of his throat as he quietly observed their surroundings.

Laon stiffened at his side but was awkwardly silent for a moment before he whispered, “Was that you? …Or something else?”

Please, let it just be Arawn’s aggressive posturing, he really didn’t want to think there was some invisible, growling monster practically on top of them.

He gripped Arawn’s hand tightly, just in case.

The hair was standing up on the back of his neck because even if it had been Arawn, he was still so sure that he saw something in the distance, and–

Oh, there. Again. The snow bank shifted, and though he couldn’t see what had caused it, he saw a clear movement of shadows, and something looked like it had either stepped on it, or burrowed into it, or slithered out of it, or–

He didn’t feel like he could trust his eyes so he just swallowed and squinted at it, hoping to make out some detail that he could use to identify whatever it was that was setting him on such high alarm.

There was something there. He heard it. Laon heard it. It was clearly not intimidated by any warning growls.

He didn’t know what it was, but he didn’t want Laon to be at risk of getting hurt, so naturally Arawn did the best thing he could think of and cast out his magic at whatever was hiding in the snow.

“Intimidation,” he growled, holding his hand out as if that would help direct which way his magic should focus. He still wasn’t entirely sure how to get all his magic to work, but it was better than just standing and waiting.

“Stay behind me,” he said to Laon, easily placing himself between whatever was lurking in the shadows and his boyfriend.

Quote:
Sailor Scout Attack: Intimidation
When opponents are within ten feet of Arawn, they will see the illusion of orange eyes peering out through the darkness at them and hear the loud growling of canines. As the eyes draw closer, the growling becomes softer. The illusion invokes and increases fear and horror. This could involve the magic causing shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, sweating, dizziness, or similar effects of a panic attack left up to the player, with the potential for lasting effects. The illusion causes the target’s mind to perceive the environment as ominous and Arawn as dark and foreboding, or even as a feral canine of death or monster himself. This will last for thirty seconds and has three uses.

Laon wasn’t weak. He didn’t need to hide behind Arawn.

He complied, regardless. It was better if he was out of the way. Laon loved Arawn and would trust him with absolutely anything, but he wasn’t going to pretend like Arawn was in full control of his impulses. He was reactive; if he saw a threat, he’d lash out at it.

Laon knew Arawn would never hurt him intentionally. He wasn’t going to open an unnecessary door to get hurt accidentally, either. Arawn would never forgive himself.

Behind Arawn, Laon kept one hand on his shoulder so he could know where he was without having to turn to locate him.

The snowbank he’d attacked was thrashing, and for the first time Laon saw it–the size of a large dog, maybe, but it was all scales and claws. Its tail looked like it was as thick as his thigh at its widest part. It was coming straight towards them even before Arawn’s magic hit, and then it seemed to frantically divert its course. It scuttled across the snow like it was on fire but it was too close for comfort.

It was clearly in panic mode and looked like it was trying to find something to climb.

Except, right now it was looking at them like they were the answer.

Laon didn’t know what it could do but he wasn’t going to take any chances; he used his magic, too. He wasn’t afraid of Arawn suffering under it; they were a team.

Fighting against a lizard that froze in its tracks. It hissed and dug its claws into the snow before it began to rapidly scurry backwards–finally, away from them.

Quote:
As Laon summons his magic, his appearance flickers to mimic a frightening stone creature that stands two heads taller than him and has a devilish appearance, including horns and wings. The illusion does not change his size, shape, or durability and does not grant him any special abilities. The creature appears to stand up to its full height and opens its mouth; a thick, black water pours out of its mouth and saturates the ground in a ten foot radius around him. The area will feel distinctly unsafe and frightening for the duration of the magic. As the water seeps into the ground, all enemies will note a foul smell that can be nauseating and distracting. The magic ends in 25 seconds and can be used three times. When the magic ends, the illusion will rapidly fade and will leave no traces but players can choose to feel sick after being in contact with the water, or remain damp after the magic ends.

Whatever that creature was, lizard or not, Arawn was not looking forward to it climbing up him or Laon! He was definitely ready to punch it in its scaly little face if--

Oh.

He breathed in relief when he could feel Laon using his magic, could see the shift out of the corner of his eye. The illusion didn’t frighten him, although he was pleased that it was enough to scare away others. And weird lizard creatures.

He was still bristled and ready to fight, but as soon as he was certain that the lizard had run off, and the illusion had faded, he turned to Laon and squished his face between his hands.

“We’re getting into the next ******** mirror we come across and going home,” he growled and drew Laon close enough to press their foreheads together. His blood was still pulsing, heart racing. He knew he needed to calm down, and looking at Laon’s beautiful face was definitely a way to help him. Sure, it was beautiful out there, if not a little creepy, but after all of that, he thought they definitely deserved a soak in the bath.
