Prompt 11 (Burning Bright) This time of year there are candles popping up in just about every shop selling anything. Maybe you stopped by one of these shops yourself, or maybe a friend wanted to get you a thoughtful gift, but somehow you’ve come into possession of a pair of candles. They don’t seem to be anything spectacular upon first glance; they are pretty and well made and have a pleasant fragrance. They would be pretty decor on their own, but once you light them, they really shine. Nonstop. For twenty four hours. No matter what you do, you cannot put the flame out. No wind, no water, no fire extinguisher–nothing–will extinguish the flame. You just have to wait until it burns itself out. Thankfully, it doesn’t seem very flammable so you don’t have to worry about other things catching on fire in the meantime. Wherever you keep the candle will have a pleasant smell for several days after the flame extinguishes.

Thea had been boxing in her father's gym all day today. She was exhausted and sweaty, but the feeling of accomplishment made it all worth it. She took a deep breath and smiled to herself as she turned off the lights and noticed a box labeled Thea sitting near the door. She smiled since she saw the poor wrapping and already knew it was from her father. She opened it to find a note inside saying "You worked hard today, you deserve this". Thea was touched and her eyes welled up with tears of joy. She hugged the box tightly and opened it to see a candle wrapped in snowflake paper. She took the candle out of the paper, grabbed a match book from her gym bag, and quickly lit the candle.
The sweet smell of vanilla filled the room and she relaxed, content with her day's work. As she sat there relaxing in the smell she noticed the candle began to really shine. She watched in amazement as the light seemed to grow brighter and brighter until it filled the room with an intense glow. She felt a sense of peace and tranquility wash over her, and she knew that no matter what happened in the future, she could always come back to this moment.
She was thankful for the gift. She quickly got up and swung her gym bag on her back. She knew it was time to get home, and so she went to blow the candle out. The only thing was it didn't go out, no matter how hard she blew on that flame. She could feel her heart racing as she watched the flames flicker and dance. She knew she had to do something since she couldn't just leave it lit in the gym. She took a deep breath and blew as hard as she could. Yet sadly it didn't work. She stood there and thought long and hard about what she could do. She knew she had to quickly come up with an idea before the flames caused a fire. She decided to grab a nearby fire extinguisher and spray it directly at the flame, which didn't do the trick either it was still un-extinguished and burning bright. She put the extinguisher back and stared at the candle with all her force. She was out of ideas and all she could think of was she wanted to go home. Home to her cozy home where her parents, siblings, and pets were most likely all sound asleep.
The only answer she came up with was to take it with her. So she grabbed the candle in one hand and the gym keys in another. She headed towards the door and quickly locked up with the candle still brightly burning. She stepped out into the night, her keys jangling in her hand. She felt the chill of the air and the crunch of the snow beneath her feet. She walked quickly, not wanting to be caught outside in the dark. Thankfully the candle lit her way very well and she could still smell its wonderful smell with each step. It didn't take her long before she got to the steps of her home.
She quickly used her keys and opened the large wooden door as quietly as she could. She stepped inside and closed the door behind her. She took a deep breath and sighed, relieved to be safely home. Once she entered she closed the door quietly and took off her gym shoes. She still held the candle in her hand and made her way to the kitchen, where a warm cup of tea awaited her. She put the candle down on the counter and poured herself a cup of tea. She sipped it slowly and savored the warmth of the drink. Taking one more deep breath, she finally felt a sense of peace and calm wash over her. The cup of tea was comforting and provided a sense of security, as it reminded her of home and the warmth and comfort it provided. The slow and steady rhythm of sipping the tea also gave her a sense of peace and tranquility, as she could take the time to appreciate the moment and reflect on her day. She almost forgot about the candle until she looked at its light. She washed her teacup and placed her teacup on the sink drying rack. She then headed over to the candle and picked it up as she headed out of the kitchen. She stopped in the hallway and admired the flickering light of the candle as it illuminated the hallway. She took a deep breath and made her way in the direction of the staircase, feeling like maybe this candle was just special. Maybe it was meant not to be extinguished and just enjoyed for as long as the wick could glow.
With that peaceful thought she headed up the spiral staircase that led to her room. She was relieved to finally be home after a long day. She slowly trudged up the stairs, taking a moment to appreciate the warmth and familiarity of her room. Before she plopped down on her bed she took the candle and placed it on her empty dresser top. The smell and light filled her room quickly. She had exhausted herself between her boxing in the gym and the candle. She took a deep breath and sighed, feeling a sense of satisfaction. She was content with the day's events and was thankful for the peacefulness of her room. She lay back on her bed and drifted off to sleep. The candle's light was guiding her dreams and even though it was still lit she knew that she was safe. Maybe that fire was really a protector - since its light had shown her the path home and it helped her get to sleep quicker than she ever had. With that thought she quickly drifted off to sleep. She slept soundly, feeling the warmth of the fire and the comfort of her home, content as could be.
