Meissa knew that this was going to be a very bad idea, but what else could she do? She had promised Beatrix that she would leave notes for her updating her on the status of things but at the same time, she worried. She had done so ever since that night when the sight of the word "Traitor" that had appeared on the tapestry design that her parents had obviously brought home. Her heart and mind felt heavy even as she chose a rooftop within visual sight of the little convenience store that Beatrix had mentioned as being an ideal place to leave covert notes for each other. Even with the heaviness that she felt, Meissa also had begun to wonder if there was such a way to turn the tables on Beatrix and spring some sort of crafty trap on the other. She had time, but not a lot of it in terms of preparation for an ambush, but she wouldn't be able to do that sort of thing alone, could she?

Taking out a coat that she'd stashed in her subspace pocket did Meissa at least deign to cover up part of what she was for this drop-off before leaping diligently off the roof before walking nonchalantly into the small 7-11.

Her gaze took in the array of merchandise on the shelves before turning her gaze to the attendant working behind the counter. Hopefully her appearance wasn't too odd for this most obvious civilian. Where had Beatrix told her to leave a message again? Oh, yes, the top of the slurpee machine.

The store was empty, the only sound was a fairly terrible intro song to what was playing on the ancient tv. Behind the counter, Todd's typical vague smile stiffened for a moment before relaxing. Not that he was actually relaxed, but because it was important not to react visibly to the costumed gangs, The ever increasing popularity of animal ears as a fashion accessory was a constant source of lowkey agony for him. But even without them...and the tail, the sense of costume was clear, even with only part of it visible from under the coat. These people really loved sticking to their individual themes.

Relaxed. Respectful. Useful. Blind. The RRUB technique Todd had developed of the years had proven time and again the way to survive in the late night world of monsters, warriors, and what he's begun to admit was magic. Did the cat lady want a Slurpee? That is very normal. Good for her. Was she doing something to it. That's fine. It's her right to do whatever she wanted. He's not curious at all! In fact, he sees absolutely nothing going on!

The new limited edition flavors of Slurpee were more benign than usual this month: Birthday Cake Peeps and Marinated Mushroom flavor.

Meissa's glance to the attendant behind the counter was brief. Hands that had been in her pocket since her entrance now came out as she perused the various flavors of slurpee. The limited flavors had her visibly wincing and unsuccessfully holding back a short gag, especially at the marinated mushroom one. But she wasn't going to be here long enough to be talked into trying it so what did it matter? Perhaps there was a sudden uptake of those crying for a mushroom flavored slurpee. Reaching up for a medium sized cup Meissa had her note to Beatrix already palmed and as she tapped the top of the machine she glanced back to the attendant before dropping the note on the final tap.

"Does anyone actually buy these limited edition monstrosities," she asked, trying to speak over the volume of the TV. Even as she awaited an answer did she move to a more benign offering of mixture of pepsi and cream soda before glancing at the merchandise in the aisle she was currently in. Grabbing a bag of doritos as well to round out her purchases did Meissa make her way slowly towards the front counter. There was a part of her that wanted to rush back and snatch the folded note she'd left behind and rip it into teeny tiny pieces but she resisted. If she didn't at least leave this first note than Beatrix would have been suspicious. It was better to string along the corrupt for as long as possible. But still ... her stomach clenched in fear of what she was doing.

Instead of thinking much more on the note, which was not giving away much in detail, Meissa moved the the counter and the attendant before sighing, "slow night?"

The catgirl looked ready to puke as she looked over the new slurpee flavours, so maybe she was a normal human being after all. Not that Todd was looking or observing in any way whatsoever.

"They do, all the time," he nodded as she picked up snacks and eventually made her way to him. Did she seem a little tense? If she was, it was absolutely none of his business! Was he a little tense? Yes. All the time. It's called survival instincts.

"The weirder the flavour, the more people turn out. Some just come as like, a dare, others do it for the 'gram, or tiktok. Some weirdos just like it." Praxibite had a talent and fullbody joy for making them even worse.

"Pretty quiet so far." He lifted his hands and wriggled his fingers at her. "No sirens and all limbs intact." Then he knocked on the counter, which wasn't actually wood, but had a plastic wood-print top, which he felt counted for some sort of half-assed bad luck prevention.

Did it come as a shock to her that people would buy such monstrous flavors of slurpee? If Meissa had to fathom the deepest recesses of her mind for some sort of argument then she probably wasn't shocked. But what others did for amusement's sake was their own damn business. Instead she simply placed her items that she wanted to purchase in front of the attendant before she sighed softly.

"Maybe it's a good thing that it's a slow night if you're rejoicing for the simple fact that all your limbs are still intact," though it made her curious enough to ask another question. It took a few seconds for the right formation of the query to be spoken and she grimaced a little, "do you always expect that busy nights mean that you'll be injured somehow?"

Taking a moment for her question to register did Meissa follow it up with a generally benign statement of her own observation ... "guess you see lots of weird things then."

"A co-worker once lost three fingers trying to fish a dollar out of the trash can outside," Todd explained sagely as he boop-booped her purchases at the register. The TV behind him was playing a near indecipherable song with text scrolling across the screen describing the end of times. "She swore it was some kind of banana-racoon hybrid that bit her and ran off."

Boop-boop.

"Most of the time it's just really weird, scary people shop-lifting." He paused, and then added for the sake of fairness. "Some of them also pay, which actually doesn't make them any less weird or scary." Though he appreciates it all the same.

"But that's just Destiny City after dark, right?" He tried to offer a oh that crazy weather sort of smile. The sort that said he was used to that sort of thing but didn't know the reason why and did not want to know the reason why, It is what it is.

Hearing about the coworker that had lost three fingers Meissa wondered to herself if the creature had been some sort of youma. Her eyes went wide before she listened to the rest of the cashier's anecdotes about the life of a graveyard attendant in a convenience store. The fact that some of the guys scary-looking customers didn't bother with paying saddened her for a moment. Even if powered folk were coming here, it didn't give them an all-access pass for stealing, did it?

Even as the total of her purchases began to add up did Meissa fidget a little. She wasn't a shop-lifting type of person, nor would she be the one to grab her purchases and run off...but she wondered, just how much damage had been brought to this little 7-11.

As the final total was rung up Meissa pulled out a handful of bills before she counted out what she needed in order for her own purchases. Looking over at what she had left, she pushed the remaining amount of cash towards the attendant before simply grabbing her items.

"In case anyone else tries to not pay for their items, you can use that to cover the costs. It's a one time offer only though, sorry I can't help out anymore."

With that exchange Meissa mentally said goodbye to the $50 extra she had just wasted on doing a good dead before taking her items and leaving the store. She didn't look back.
