Quote:
Prompt 8 (Marshmallow Snow): Fresh-fallen snow coats Destiny City. It’s pristine and crisp, and it crunches as you walk through it. It may be a few inches deep, but it doesn’t seem to go above your calves when walking. At first, it’s easy enough to walk through, but gradually you realize that it’s getting harder to move. Every step you take feels like the snow is pulling you back in, and if you get a good look you might realize that sticky white fluff is clinging to you. The more you walk, the more it pulls, until you’re almost completely stuck. Something about the snow smells oddly sweet, and the tacky, marshmallow-like snow seems like it’s suddenly become a prison. The more you try to break free, the stickier it gets, and you’d better hope you don’t fall down. The more you struggle the harder it is to escape, but if you manage to stay still for a few minutes, the marshmallow will freeze and crystallize. When you move again, the snow will turn into a powdery dust and you can break free easily. The only good thing about this is that you won’t starve if you get trapped–the snow tastes just like marshmallows.

Fang already disliked winter. How dead everything got. It looked pretty when the snow fell, sure. Everything glistened, got soft and quiet in a way that might have been comforting, if it didn't remind him so starkly of his deadened world. He didn't want to be out here, trudging through the snow, doing a patrol, but evil never slept, and therefore, so shouldn't Fang.

He sighed to himself. Focus, he told himself, ears twitching as he listened for any sound out of the ordinary. Then... he realised he was slowing down. The snow seemed thicker, almost, harder to shift through. He frowned at it and tugged his legs forward—the stuff was nearly to his knees, but not quite. What... He kept forcing himself forward, frantic now, but the snow held fast to him—he couldn't move.

He'd gotten stuck.

"Help!" he cried out, sensing an Order aura nearby, twisting his legs this way and that, trying to break free. He was stuck. He was stuck. Stuckstuckstuckstuckstuckstuck—

From the next street over, Ida heard a call for help and it sent her heart beating in her throat as her adrenaline spiked. 'Help' was never a good thing to hear, but here in Destiny City... it was always worse.

Spinning on her heel, the senshi turned towards the call and took off running, fresh snow flying up around her boots. The sound had come from... over there! The streets were quiet this time of day, in this part of town. Foot traffic was only one or two people, heads down as they hurried through the cold to somewhere warmer. Ida ignored them as she passed and the looks some gave her in her short skirts and bare arms. Some shrank away from her and she ignored that too. She couldn't blame them... the city had seen far too much violence for far too long, and too many lies about what was going on besides. Better those people kept away from people like her. Not everyone with powers was safe to be around.

Around the corner and the orchid senshi caught sight of a familiar figure, ankle deep in snow and looking panicked.

"Fang!" Ida called as she ran towards him, casting sharp looks around them for whatever had been threatening him. Had it been Fang who had called out...? Her pace slowed as the snow... thickened, getting hard to wade through. It seemed to suck at her legs as she got closer, until every step was a struggle. She fought her way closer, before finally pulling up a foot that refused to budge, sending her stumbling forward. Her knees hit the ground near her friend and she struggled against the thick, sticky snow, her own alarm growing.

"What the heck? Fang, are you okay?" She called as she tugged at her legs, a frown pulling her brows together. What was this stuff? It looked like snow, but snow didn't act like this.... was it some sort of trap?

Fang's eyes went wide with further alarm as Ida rushed forward. He tried to stop her from getting too close, a warning on his lips, hands raised as if to stop her, but she dropped to her knees beside him before he could say anything at all.

Then she, too, was stuck, and Fang winced, feeling guilty. "Fang not know. Just patrol, walk in snow, and then it... not snow," he explained, as much as he could. He squatted, feeling at least somewhat better now that he wasn't alone. His frantic pulling had ceased, at least.

"Very sticky. Fang stuck, now Ida too," he said regretfully. "Sorry..."

Ida flashed him a reassuring smile as he crouched down, reaching to put a comforting hand on his arm.

"Its okay, don't worry about it. I don't know what's going on, but we can figure it out together. Things are always better when we work in groups." She said with firm belief. This wasn't the normal sort of situation she usually found herself in, but at least they were together. And, with how upset Fang had looked, she felt better being here, even stuck, than with him being alone to deal with it.

Ida gave another experimental tug, moving slowly to test each of her legs against the sticky mess.

"It doesn't feel like snow any more..." The senshi agreed as she slipped off one of her bracelets, reaching further away to touch it to the snow and feel it get stuck. Something nagged at her, and after a moment she was able to capture the thought.

"It smells strange, doesn't it? Kind of sweet?"

Fang relaxed further. taking a deep breath. Ida was here. Everything would be okay. He knew it would be, with her here. He tilted his head at her observation, though, curious and confused. After sniffing the air, he squatted down to sniff the snow-like substance furiously.

"Smell... like sugar," he said with a small frown. "Lick it?"

He didn't wait for an answer, instead, scooping some up and gnawing at it. His eyes went wide and he spat it out in disgust.

"Marshmallow," he growled furiously, tail and ear fur bristling as he glared at the sticky, horrible, terrible "snow".

She might have stopped him, if she'd guessed he was going to try to eat it... but her mind wasn't fast enough to jump from 'smells like sugar' to trying to taste it. Ida watched as he scooped some to put into his mouth, instantly making a terrible face.

She clapped her hand to her mouth when marshmallow came out in a growl, stifling a sudden chortle.

Ida should have been worried that the stuff would glue his mouth together, or... poison him or something, but there was just something about the sheer disgust in his voice paired with the innocent word he spat out with the snow that just broke her. The chortle turned into soft snorts as she covered her mouth with both hands, brown eyes dancing above her fingers and shoulders shaking. It brought the soft jingle of the bracelets around her slender wrists as she shook with quiet laughter, trying desperately to curb it and failing utterly.

His expression... it was just too much. Every time she looked at it him it sparked off another bout of laughter, remembering how he had spat out the snow.

Fang pouted a bit when Ida began laughing at him—marshmallow was yucky!! Gross and sticky and filled your mouth all weird and made it hard to breathe—no way. The longer he sat there pouting as she laughed, though, the more brittle the stuff around them became. An ear twitched as he heard it crackle, waited another long moment, and then—

Snap! Crackle! Pop! He pulled free! He howled a bit with delight and pranced his way up a nearby picnic table to cheer and then scowl at the place he'd gotten stuck.

"Marshmallow stupid," he said with a tone of finality.

The senshi bent nearly double as her giggles rolled out, shaking her shoulders. It took time for them to wear themselves out and roll to a stop, which gave Fang time to free himself. Ida felt him move away and she looked up to see him climbing onto a table nearby, free of the clinging marshmallow snow.

Tentatively, she tested her legs and found the snow around it crumbling away. Freed, she climbed to her feet and bent to brush the last of it from her legs, still smiling to herself.

"I'm sorry you don't like it." She said as she dusted off her skirts as well. "But at least it let us go. I'm glad it wasn't any worse than that. Do you not like sweet things?"

Ida picked her way carefully out of the snow, following Fang's larger footprints as she went, until she could climb up on the table beside him. Feet on the bench, she leaned back on her arms, studying the snow and wondering how far the sticky part went... and if all of it had started to crumble now or not.

"Oh, no. Fang loves sweet. It is the sticky I hate," he explained, watching with great relief as Ida was also freed from the sticky, terrible, marshmallow snow. "It too sticky and fill your mouth up so much, Fang can't breathe."

He sighed. "Fang just glad he and Ida are not stuck." He wasn't even mad she'd laughed at him for spitting out the marshmallow snow. He knew he must have looked ridiculous, but it wasn't something he was embarrassed by. Shame of this kind had tried to rise up in him and make him question everything he did on Earth for a while, but having people love him for who he was made it easier to just be like himself again without feeling shame.

Smiling gently, Ida leaned over and slipped her arm through Fang's beside her, giving him a one-armed hug before she released him again.

"I'm glad we're not stuck too. Weird things like this seem to happen a lot around the holidays. This wasn't too much trouble, but I'm going to keep an eye out for other people who get stuck in something like this. Just in case it ends up being more trouble... I don't want anyone to get hurt from it." Ida said as possible scenerios played in her head. Someone who struggled too much could pull something. A sudden stop, because they'd run through a patch of this snow, could cause a fall or some other kind of collision... and if someone ended up face down in it... it could potentially be deadly in a number of different ways.

"Were you patroling when you got stuck?" Ida asked as she glanced over at her friend. "I was in the middle of mine."

Fang leaned into the hug, fully relaxing now. He felt much better up on this picnic table, far away from the sticky snow, and sitting with a friend.

"Much trouble for Fang," he said with a little smile, trying to show he was only joking. Humor was still something he couldn't get a good grasp on, generally, but he was trying. His favorite was to exaggerate by a big amount.

"And, yes, was on patrol. Nothing happen, until sticky snow." Once again, he made a face at this, the taste of it lingering in his mouth.

Ida smiled at his face, covering her lips with her fingers as she pushed herself to her feet.

"Do you want to pair up for the rest of our patrol? We can keep an eye on each other and make sure we don't get stuck again." She said as she smoothed her skirts down with her palms. "Plus, its just fun to hang out."

Ida laughed softly as she offered him her hand, waiting to pull him up off the park table.

Fang nodded eagerly, tail wagging and ears perking right up. "Yes, yes!" he said, taking her hand and letting her help him off the table. "Fang love being with Ida. Good friend."

He smiled warmly at her, feeling perfectly happy.
