Quote:
Prompt 17 (Cryogenic Crisis): A strange phenomenon has overtaken the flora of Destiny City. Most prevalent in large trees, but occurring also in saplings, bushes, and any wooded plant, the color seems to be completely draining and the plants are becoming oddly crystalline. Leaves and bark especially almost seem to be turning to ice, and observant passersby might notice that the trees seem to be crystalizing. They are cold to the touch and even seem to melt under heat. The increased weight has made it dangerous to walk beneath any of these trees; branches also snap and fall, and even leaves and small twigs can become dangerous projectiles. Scientists have said there is a pollutant in the water causing a strange chemical reaction, but there’s still something suspicious about it. Destiny City has employed some specialists to treat the afflicted trees, and some already seem to be in various stages of recovery–but if you’re out and about, chances are that you’ll still find a few of these arborous anomalies.

Leah had decided to find Caedus once again. She had the day off, and had a box filled with some of the seasonal sweet treats that the bakery had come out with, and they were fantastic. Hopefully he would enjoy them as much as she had.

She was back in the area of the woods that she had found him in before, but…it was so different now. The last time there had been leaves everywhere, which had made it possible to even find Caedus…but this time? This time the woods seemed…frozen over. Or at least, the trees looked frozen over…it was…eerie, and she wasn’t sure that she liked it but…that was fine. Leah didn’t have to like everything.

After a moment she yelped as a branch cracked and fell right by her feet. Okay…well. That was dangerous…and as her first thought was that she should have brought an umbrella…

That wouldn't do anything to help, obviously but. Sometimes minds did what they wanted. As she saw the suggestion of movement up ahead, she swallowed. “...Your Highness? It’s Leah!”

Hopefully it was Caedus and not some…well…

Creepy woods monster.

Caedus was not a fan of the winter. He’d spent more time indoors than usual, grateful for the generosity of those that offered him a safe place to hide himself. He’d been kept fed and warm, but his restlessness always seemed to catch up to him. He had little to offer this world, and the more he stayed put, the more anxious he got.

Now was no exception.

He just hated the snow. It wasn’t only the chill, or the way it made his bones crack and rattle when he moved. He hated the footprints, too. He hated the way it made him easy to find. Often, once he found a secluded place away from everyone else, he would walk in large circles to disrupt the entire area and dirty up the snow. He didn’t like the silence, either. No birdsong, no animals. No leaves to shake in the wind.

He heard Leah well before she arrived.

In better times, he might have gone to greet her. Now, he was rooted to the ground in front of an icy tree. It wasn’t the only one of its kind, but it was the worst of it. Some of the nearby trees were in various stages of similar icy mutation. His brows were knitted together as he observed the anomaly.

Caedus had his hood pulled up; he wasn’t dressed in any Velencian garb today. He was dressed in a custom cut outfit that looked expensive and well fitting, and a winter coat and cloak. From a distance, he looked like any other well-dressed city-goer. Up close, he was still Caedus.

“Caedus,” he called back softly, not at her volume, but enough to be heard. He sounded a bit distracted. He tore his gaze from the tree but it was a slow and arduous process. His bones creaked as he did so but he half turned to face her.

His voice was gravely and he had to forcefully clear his throat. The cold was not kind to him but he had enjoyed the fresh air. Even if the chill hadn’t sparked any new revelations about how to help Earth or Velencya.

Leah gave a relieved sigh and hurried to cross the distance between the two of them, presenting her box of treats with a smile. “I have made these for you! It is the special holidays of Earth and we–the bakery I mean, we have wonderful seasonal treats!”

Well okay. She didn’t make them for him, but she had brought them…and had put the faces on the snowman eclair, so…it counted. But still.

“I did not fully make them, but I did help to decorate. I did bring them though, so please enjoy! How are you? Are you terribly cold out here?”

There was concern in her voice now as she looked him over. “I hope that you can find a place to call home someday soon…this…is not weather to be trapped outside in…no matter how warm your coat.”

Caedus’ brows lifted slightly when presented with the treats and he examined the gift with great interest.

“It is not unbearable,” he assured of the cold. He held out his hands to accept the box. “Sometimes I find the cold pleasant.”

Not often. It was unkind to his bones, and once the novelty of the snowy stillness had worn off, it was impossibly lonely. He didn’t need reminders.

He did not know if he was looking for a new home. He’d lost so many already. He had places to stay and that was enough for his needs.

“Will you share these with me or do you wish for me to eat them all? We can sit and talk. I want to hear all that you have been doing here.”

“I am very glad it’s not unbearable, and I would love to share with you. If I ever tell you that I don’t want to partake in the sweets from our bakery…please take that as an admission that I am gravely ill, or something else is wrong.” It was only the truth, and Leah glanced around, finding the stump of a tree that was covered in snow and taking the time to brush it all off before taking a seat. “I’ve…mostly been doing the same? I truly enjoy the bakery. I enjoy being useful. Which…I’m sure isn’t a surprise.”

She had joined the Vanguard, had always wanted to prove herself useful.

“I’ve gotten very good at talking to humans. I blend in…really well, I think. Working the register at the bakery has helped with that. I can talk with almost anyone now, and I’ve gotten very good at…” Leah hesitated. “...I suppose emotional regulation is the best way to describe it. I can keep myself calm and don’ get over excited…as often as I used to. Sometimes…sometimes I do but…other times I'm very good at just being…normal. As some would call it.”

“Normal is subjective,” Caedus mused, making himself comfortable. He opened the box and selected a cookie before he held the box out for her to make a selection.

“I do not think I am qualified to determine ‘normal’, anyway.” He was an anomaly now and always. He couldn’t fit in no matter how hard he tried. So, sometimes, he didn’t.

“Do you feel satisfied when you put so much effort into masking who you are?” he asked, and as there was no judgment, he seemed to be asking in earnest. I do not think you should have to hide who you are. Although,” he was quiet for a moment. “I suppose I am hypocritical in that regard. Are you happy? I suppose that is what matters most.”

“I.” Leah hesitated and frowned. Thinking before she spoke. She took a moment to select one of the cookies and nibbled before she finally reached down, fiddling for a moment before she let her glamour fall. “I am. Happy as Leah. Happy masquerading as a human. I enjoy my life, yes. I. I miss things though. I miss. Some people. I miss…the simplicity of just…existing. Of knowing what I had to do. Of having an outline. Guidelines. I. I do not know.”

She drew in a breath and withdrew the embroidered symbol of the Vanguard and held it out to Caedus.

“I have been reflecting. I suppose. I do not want to hide as much any longer. I’ve. Thought of trying to contact…some. If I can. I know I am not…I do not expect to be well received but. I suppose…no matter how much I yearn to simply be Leah. I will still always be Aeleas…”

Caedus considered this for a moment. He reached out to accept the embroidered symbol, because it had been offered, but he seemed contemplative as he did so.

“I think, if you can, you should reach out to them. Your friends will miss you. I think they will have been worried. Do not isolate yourself. You can make your own path without leaving them behind. Earth is full of possibilities. And…”

His voice softened, faded. Silence. It took him a few seconds more to finish his thought.

“I do not recommend walking a lonely path if you can help it. Can you make an outline for yourself? You are very clever. What goals do you have for yourself now?”

“I…want to. But I am just so afraid of it getting reported to Lyndin. I.” Aeleas closed her eyes for a moment and then looked at Caedus. If anyone would understand, he would. “He frightens me. After what he did. I am sure that you understand. It’s been worth…everything just to not have to deal with the disillusion of what he had been. Of what the Vanguard had been and what it suddenly seemed to have become. It. It isn’t something I’ve given myself the grace to really. Examine. I could write myself an outline though. Figure out goals…that might be a good thing to do…but. I do not want to be who and what I was before…and I think that is causing…my mental blocks. And.” She waved her hand slightly. “...Everything else but. I will try.”

After a moment, she smiled slightly. “My path is not lonely though…I have a family. People who love me. I am happy as Leah. I am just. It isn’t all that I can be.”

Caedus tilted his head just slightly to the side. “Is being reported to Commodore Lyndin so bad? I do not think he would reprimand.” Maybe he just saw the best in him. Though they had their history, it was difficult for Caedus to think poorly of him. Lyndin had always been professional.

He had always seen what others had missed.

He had always had a heart bigger than they knew.

Caedus understood fear, though. He grappled with a great many emotions, and as such his eyes eventually drifted to the cookie in his hand so he had something innocent enough to focus on.

“I am sorry, I know it is a complicated situation. There are many sides, and I am a bit out of touch. I think the Vanguard is not unlike what it was meant to be. It is a difficult situation to be in. He is just trying to save our people. I do not envy positions of power. It is a great burden.”

He sighed heavily but tried to lift his mood. “I am glad your path is not lonely, though. Do you get homesick?”
