The sleepover had been wonderful, and Mechelen thought Almere was just the most amazing person she had ever met…but. Now that she knew that Halle was related to ALmere…

Well. She wanted to gloat…and show off…and just.

To see her friend. It had been too long.

The note she wrote to him was…well…it got the point across.

Quote:
Halle! It’s Mechelen! I need to see you urgently, not for anything bad but we have things to talk about and I want to see you as a Squire and I want you to see me as the same! See, I’m like, besties with Almere and she told me who you were! Sneaky sneaky! I’m at the park over by Meadowview! See you soon, I hope!

Mechelen

That was more than enough to get the point across, and Mechelen happily stamped her ring on the paper and watched it vanish into the night, and then she sat on a swing and simply waited.

He would show up. She could feel it. After a call out like that…

He had to show up.

Getting the note, the corners of Halle's lips lifted as he checked around to make sure no odd energy signatures (or the familiar one of Lisse) were approaching. Urgent huh? She wanted to show off. With a quiet huff of laughter to himself, he had to admit he wanted to show off too. It was good that she leveled up to squire, too. For some reason it felt off to worry about Mechelen as a weaker party, even if he'd yet to really get rid of the anxiety and guilt about potentially (or actually) hurting her.

Thinking about it for a moment, Halle found that he hoped she became a knight before him, too.

As he headed over to Meadowview, he considered the fact that she was besties with Almere. Did they know each other as civilians too? Were they classmates? The questions faded off as he walked up to the playground and saw her on the swings, letting the aura of another squire wash over him.

Yeah, that felt right.

With a grin, he waved and called out, "It suits you!"

Mechelen grinned and struck a pose as she felt Halle draw near and nodding in a pleased sort of way, she was happy to see that he was also a Squire. “Suits you too, lazy bum. I’m happy for you, but the selfish part of me that is very much alive and well wishes that you would have still been a Page! Oh well.”

Taking a few steps over to Halle, she tossed back her hair. “I’m loving the new petticoat, it’s extremely fun and I can’t say no to fun, and I love your boots, and the extra feather in your hat. You still look like a bard though…what’s your new weapon?”

Concentrating for a moment, she summoned her new, larger tapestry to hand. “This is mine, I can’t really complain, but…it’s still…”

Useless. It was still useless. Oh well. She was at least stronger.

His smile twitched at lazy bum. Internally he shouted I WORK VERY HARD ACTUALLY!! But it would look very...whiny and uncool to argue that outloud. Anyway, Mechelen was probably just joking, right? She was definitely praising him mostly, right? So just focus on that and don't be a weird loser in front of her. Again.

He also didn't comment on looking like a bard. Luke was the bard! He was a ranger!

Clearing his throat, Halle summoned a small wooden shield, shaped like a unicorn head. It somewhat matched the tapestry. Lysithea knights sure stay on brand, he thought, trying not to show any signs of pity.

How the heck is she going to fight with that?!

"Yeah...does it...um, what's the magic it channels?"

Mechelen paused and though she didn’t want to admit that she had no idea…she couldn’t quite think of a way around letting on that…she had no idea. “How about I just show you instead? What about you? What does your magic do?”

Temporize, maybe with some luck she would be able to figure out by the time that she tried it on him…and hopefully whatever it was wouldn’t…well. Wouldn’t hurt Halle. That would be the very last thing that she wanted to happen. He was one of her very best friends, after all…and though she liked to tease him and pretend that she was better than him…she honestly didn’t believe it. But…

Still!

“How about you show me yours and then I’ll show you mine? That seems fair, yeah?” At least then…she could possibly figure out how to use hers.

Rocking back on his heels, Halle gave the little tapestry a look that was maybe a little too polite before nodding. "It's pretty simple, honestly." A moment later, a huge wooden shield appeared. It was a cheerful copy of the smaller one in his hand. A moment later it was gone, reappearing on the other side. Feeling the seconds of power tick down, he dismissed it all together. Who knew if he'd need it later?

"Big shield," he summed up the magic with a succinct sort of satisfaction. At times he'd found himself a little dissatisfied not to have a more offense oriented magic, but with the uses he'd put it to in actual combat, it has proven to be flexible and helpful. There was also a sort of...control of the battlefield potential, which spoke to him on a deep level.

“Woah!”

Mechelen was…impressed, to say the least. She couldn’t just…admit to him that she had no idea how to work her magic but instead…it was simply time to bullshit and hope for the best. It wouldn’t be the first time she had done it, nor would it be the last and just…

She took a step away from Halle and held her tapestry out towards him…simply doing what felt right.

As the strange, magical threads began to reach towards her friend and competition, she tried to school her expression into one that wasn’t absolutely excited and stunned but…failed a bit.

“See for yourself what mine can do, why don’t you?”

Hopefully, he would allow the threads to hit him because…she really wanted to know too…

A larger, more ornate tapestry with a scene of a unicorn laying on grass. When channeling her magic, Mechelen holds her Tapestry out towards her opponents, and small glowing threads reach for them. If the threads touch, the opponents are brought into an illusion of being inside of the tapestry. The unicorn is there and they can interact with it, no harm can come to them while they are in this state and no harm can come to them inside of the illusion. While in the tapestry world, the most curious thing is that everything looks as though it is made up of various threads, as though they had truly been pulled into the tapestry. Mechelen can channel her magic for forty seconds in this stage and she can draw a maximum of two people into the illusion so long as they are within a ten foot radius of her.

Halle didn't preen over the exclamation. He absolutely did not. But he did puff up, just a bit.

Scrunching his brow a bit at the mystery of Mechelen's attack, he stood and wait, eyes fixed at her movements, and then on the golden threads. In his head, he began to count, trying to figure out the speed she was working with. The threads reached out to him, and Halle was suddenly somewhere else. A familiar colorful unicorn sat in the grass and everything looked strange.

It took a long moment to realize he'd played games that looked a little like this. Everything looked like it was made of cloth...no, thread. Like the world's most arduous embroidery project. Moving around, he called out, "Mechelen? This is really, really weird. And cool," he assured her, "...but incredibly strange."

It felt, in a way, much more magical than his own ability.

Mechelen hesitated and managed to stop the magic she was using, pulling the tapestry close to her chest again. “What was it like? It didn’t look like anything to me, just you standing there with a few threads hanging on you…like…what happened?”

She hoped that he wasn’t just…lying to make her feel better about herself, but…that didn’t seem like something he would do, he was far too filled with his own importance to lie about something to boost her ego.

“Did it make you see something? Like, you looked really confused…I couldn’t see anything but you.”

When everything suddenly went back to normal (for a given value of normal), Halle was left standing, his hand reaching out to...empty air, now. Whipping his head around in confusion, he heard Mechelen's explanation, that it was basically all in his head, and flushed with total embarrassment.

Rubbing the back of his neck, he looked away from her. "The unicorn was there, laying in the grass and...it was weird? It all looked very handmade. I guess it literally made me think I was in the banner? Or a world woven like it, at least?"

With a huge sigh, he admitted, "It's kind of cool but, if I met it in a fight, also potentially scary. Especially coming back, like, I wouldn't know how the fight had progressed at all and wouldn't be very ready for whatever happened as soon as you dropped the magic."

“Well, I think that’s a good thing, honestly. If it means I can get an edge in a fight, so be it. You’ll be there to protect us, and I’ll disorientate the enemy…I can’t wait until Almere gets magic too, I’ll bet hers will be amazing!”

The idea of all of them fighting together…

“What about your brother? What’s his magic like? Have you seen it yet? Is he a Squire too?”

That would be mortifying if he wasn’t but…none of Mechelen’s business.

“I’m eager to try it out on a real enemy one day…maybe not one day soon...but one day.”

Embarrassment faded, replaced by something a lot a warmer and nicer. Relief? I must be relief, at knowing that there was someone by him who wanted to train, to come up with strategies, and build up a capable team. A friend and partner with a similar vision.

"He's got a whip, and a good offensive magic to go with it," Halle answered, expression growing soft and fond as he met her eyes. "We should start hunting out youma as a group. Get used to our magic just in case..."

He exhaled, "November was busy, and there were a couple enemies that were way bigger, and way stronger than I was prepared for. Or that someone could face alone."

“I’m absolutely game for that. If he has offensive magic, that’s amazing, the three of us could be pretty good together, I bet! Also, I’m going to need some help cleaning up my wonder a bit…I want to like…throw a party someday, so if you ever have some time and some extra cleaning products…let me know and we’ll go up there together, okay? Almere and me had a sleepover up there the other day and made some progress on the ballroom…like, we were able to sleep in there on the spot we cleaned and it wasn’t bad. Saw a gnarly spider though! It looked like a gemstone with legs. I didn’t even kill it.”

And not just because she had been a little unnerved by it…just because…it was there for a reason. Maybe.

“Anyway, can I count on you?”

Lizbot

"A ballroom, huh?" Her wonder sounded fancy, at least the indoor areas. Though maybe the lodge on Halle had similar, he hadn't explored the building nearly as much as the forest.

Grinning at the mention of spiders he gave her a sympathetic nod, "I've got spiders on mine, too. They're huge," he added dramatically. "They're pretty, though. They have a big flowers on top. Maybe that sort of thing is typical for Lysithea? Beautiful wildlife, right down to the insects."

Rocking back on his feet, he eventually agreed to her request, and they began to plan the logistics of the next trip in-between testing out their new magics and limitations on one another.
