There was just something so very satisfying about watching the growing trail of orbs leech out of an unknowing civilian and gather neatly into his open palm. Sodalite looked at his victim with the barest concealed amount of contempt before sighing. Perhaps it was just him but draining from those that were below the poverty line seemed to be just a cheapened experience in the ever-growing saga he was living. But energy was energy and if this was the easiest method to obtaining it, then who was he to complain?

Nope, he could complain about the experience. Or more so the smell of the experience. Sodalite's nose wrinkled as he cut off the energy siphoning before stepping back a foot in order to try and get in a breath of fresh air. Oh god. The scent this victim gave off was atrocious.

Perhaps though seeing as he was already here and committed to finishing the job he'd set out to do, Sodalite approached the unconscious man. One hand went to plug his nose while the other hovered over the target area where Sodalite knew a starseed awaited him if he chose to take it.

Reaching in to his victim's chest, he paused for a moment as another aura sprang up before hastily yanking on the glittering crystal he knew was housed within before causing it to vanish into his pocket of hidden space. He backed away and focused on returning about three-quarters of the energy he had collected to his victim before starting the process of slowly draining the energy again.

Perhaps he'd trick whomever it was that he was feeling into thinking he'd left the real prize alone.

There was something nefarious going on in the park tonight, Spei could feel it. Of course, this being Destiny City, there was something nefarious going on every night, at least when it came to the Negaverse. The parks were not safe to be in at night, unless you were one of the powered people – and even then it could be a dodgy proposition. Spei could feel, though, that the individual in the park near his usual patrolling route wasn't one of the big guns. Still, nefarious goings on were nefarious, and he intended to stop whatever they were doing.

Leaping silently from rooftop to rooftop, the Moon Squire approached the park in question, then dropped to the pavement below. He slowly followed the Negaverse aura deep into the park, trying to keep himself under as much cover as he could. As he got closer, he caught glimpses between the trees of the agent he'd felt. The smell coming off of the victim lying on the ground finally reached his nose, and he squinted and gave a short, sharp sigh. Why did these people think it was okay to take advantage of those in unfortunate situations like this poor soul? The city's most vulnerable population were easy targets. Too easy.

That made him a little angry. Filled with such righteous indignation, Spei stepped out from behind a tree and summoned his shield, golden eyes flashing. "I suggest you leave this man alone and move along," he intoned flatly. "He's done nothing to deserve being drained."

And ... like a flash of moonlight there stood the protector of all things good with the world. Sodalite scoffed. What a load of crap. There was nothing righteous with this lot and he already had the proof of that. Feigning a sigh the agent straightened up before merely staring down the owner of the aura he'd felt. He summoned his own version of a weapon before taking in the shield that the other now seemed to carry with ease. Well this would be an interesting battle.

"Are you kidding me? Can you not already tell what he's done to deserve being used like a battery on this fair night? His very stench is fouling the air around us," he glanced down to the drained civilian before smirking, "surely a little energy draining could be considered recompense for afflicting us normal folk for the pungent aroma he's been giving off. Right?"

There was a hint of a challenge to prove him wrong in his final word and Sodalite gave a brief wiggle of his fingers and one smaller orb of energy floated back down to the man. "Though there'd be an interesting little proposition I could offer ... if you really care about this stranger, take his place."

Sodalite's grin widened for a brief second before he charged the other without much warning.

Spei listened to the lieutenant's words berating the vagrant man he was standing over and only got angrier. "Tempting," he snarled, "but I'd prefer that no one got their energy drained tonight. I'm not about to surrender myself to your oh so tender ministrations." Looking at the weapon the Negaverse agent had summoned, he raised an eyebrow. A child's Skip-It toy. He knew lieutenants, like Pages, initially manifested with pretty useless weapons; his own weapon had been so useless he'd never summoned it before he became a Squire. This guy's weapon, however, looked like it would do some damage if he swung it at someone.

Before Spei could say -- or even think -- anything else, the lieutenant charged him. Reflexively he raised his shield arm to deflect the incoming blow from the swinging toy; it connected with a bone-jarring clang, causing Spei to take a step back to keep his balance. Rather than engage in close quarters with the Chaos agent, though, he leapt into a double backflip, landing a good few yards away from him. Now he had room to counter-attack.

"Moonlight Blast!" he shouted, aiming the face of his shield at the lieutenant.

Quote:
Forgotten Spell Enhancement – Moonlight Blast: From his shield, Spei can unleash a brilliant blast of concentrated moonlight about the size of a baseball at a single enemy target. The force of the impact knocks the target back around 12ft; the moonlight fills them with a profound sense of enlightenment, that maybe the Negaverse isn't that great and that they should consider purifying. The target can fight the effects of the magic with their willpower. Spei can use this three times per battle, the enlightenment lasting 10 seconds after impact.

Well this was something new. Sodalite's weapon probably jarred his opponent's shield arm with how hard it seemed to resonate. Even his own arm felt a little wobbly from the impact. He tried to bring his weapon around again for another swing when his opponent suddenly did an impressive back flip and landed some distance away.

"Hmmph, can't stand you either," was his murmured comment just before the other man yelled something out at him. Sodalite hadn't had much experience with those that were in the knight faction with the exception to a couple of pages so having one that seemed to use magic was a new experience. Even as the softball sized light hurled in his direction the lieutenant made no effort to dodge. Taking the hit for scientific knowledge would at least aid any report he could make about this individual, if one was indeed needed.

For a softball sized sphere of light though it sure packed a wallop. Sodalite found himself knocked back a few meters before shaking out his limbs to clear off the residual effect of being forcibly thrown back. Everything felt fine and he hadn't collided with anything that would have caused further discomfort but he did suddenly find himself thinking a little bit more that was solely necessary. Thoughts flashed through his mind and as much as he wanted to deny some of them, there were a few little persistent whispers about how much better it'd be to work with this stranger, rather than against him. Sodalite's mouth twisted into a sneer though. Focus, he thought, the real prize is already in your possession. And this individual doesn't know it yet. It was hard though not to simply consider all the various ideas that he found his brain plagued with but he wasn't completely a pushover. He was able to make complicated plans when it came to chess matches so why could he not treat this scenario as such. The unconscious man on the bench would serve to draw his opponent back in towards him if threatened and that would be his opponent's weakness that he could possibly capitalize on.

Straightening his posture Sodalite stood tall and glared at his opponent before twirling his little skip-it toy around on his arm before walking back towards the unconscious man from before and looked down at him. "If you are all the way over there, how can you stop me from say taking further action against the one you are so hellbent on protecting?"

Sodalite's hand rested against the individual's chest before sinking an inch inside, "the thing is with backing away, is you leave things exposed, and ripe for the taking."

As he watched the Negaverse agent get knocked back by the blast from his shield, Spei felt a bit of satisfaction. b*****d deserved the hard landing he got on his butt – and maybe, just maybe, the other effect of the concentrated moonlight would work as well. Maybe, just maybe, he'd give this guy cause to reconsider his allegiances.

But no, the lieutenant got to his feet and walked back to the poor unfortunate man on the park bench. Spei watched the agent slip his hand partway into the man's chest and immediately realized he'd made a miscalculation: by jumping away from the lieutenant, he'd left the hapless victim of all this even more vulnerable. The Moon Squire couldn't stand by and allow the Negaverse agent free rein to do whatever he wanted. And apparently what he wanted was the vagrant's starseed.

Moving as fast as he could, he ran and leapt to ricochet off a tree and fly at the lieutenant, aiming a roundhouse kick at the other man's head. With luck, he'd connect and at least ring his bell a bit.

As he thought it might have happened the threat to the unconscious victim, losing his starseed, had drawn his opponent's attention back to him. Sodalite hastily brought his hand out of the chest of his victim for the night. His hand was empty. Quickly making a decision and regretting it the instant that he picked up the homeless man did Sodalite duck behind the instant shield he'd made of his own. The other option would have been to throw the man's body at the squire in mid-air and hope that the trajectory was true, but this seemed the safer bet.

Even as he braced for the impact that was sure to occur any minute did Sodalite adjust his grip on the ringed portion of his plastic weapon to be able to fling it out at the squire as soon as impact was made.

Impact in ... three ... two ... one.

CRASH!

The impact was jarring but as he had thought, it had been lessened. Shoving the homeless man off of him he struggled to extricate his hand free in order to swing his weapon out at his opponent. Drain, gotta try and slow him down ... even the playing field was the thought he next had even as he tried to establish physical contact with the squire in order to try and siphon off a little of his energy.

Spei saw the Negaverse agent pick up the unconscious vagrant, using the man as a meat shield as the Moon Squire whipped his leg around to deliver a solid kick. He couldn't twist his body around mid-air to avoid hitting the unfortunate victim, and his booted foot connected hard with both the man and the lieutenant.

Down they went, and down he went, struggling to land in such a way that he could roll and get back to his feet. He dismissed his shield so he could better recover his balance; this was a mistake. The lieutenant's weapon was swinging again, and this time it connected with Spei's shoulder joint, sending a sharp jarring pain and numbness down his arm. He fumbled his roll, ending up on his back on the ground hissing, perilously close to the Nega.

Quickly collecting himself, Spei scrambled to his feet as the lieutenant shoved the homeless man's body away. Still clutching his numb arm, the Moon Squire headed for the hapless vagrant, who was laying in an awkward and unnatural position face-down on the ground. He had to see if the man was okay. He kept half an eye on the lieutenant, though, just in case the other man tried something. Which he didn't put past him.

Well it seemed as if his newer target didn't want to stay still long enough for Sodalite to get some energy from him. He winced as he stood up as being knocked to the ground and feeling residual impacts, even through something acting as a shield still ended up causing discomfort. He had gotten his licks in though while the tangle of victim, squire and lieutenant were all together down on the ground. Taking in the sight of this squire rushing over to check on the man that was once more regaled to the role of unusable stage prop did Sodalite give a weary sigh. Already the real threat was forgotten about as this white mooner decided it was better to check on the soon-to-be-dead homeless man. Admittedly it was probably the squire's final mistake ... not pushing the fight further as Sodalite already had the real prize in his possession.

Giving a mock bow to his opponent for the evening Sodalite cleared his throat before simply looking over the scene one last time. The joke was on the squire if he thought that he could protect the vagrant from further attacks. Feeling as if the better option were to simply extricate himself from further conflict did Sodalite simply turn on the proverbial dime before walking away. As soon as he was out of sight though he sprinted to at least get out of the park. Once that goal was achieved did Sodalite duck into the nearest alley to power down before simply mixing into the diminishing crowds of holiday shoppers. He'd gotten a little bit more of hands-on experience tonight but had learned quite a bit as a result. The deceptive act of pretending to drain a victim only after taking the starseed was perhaps a better way that he could make quotas. Drain a victim just enough to knock 'em out ... quickly take the starseed, and then pretend as if he was only starting for the night would give him the advantage every single time.

Quite simply - it was the best plan he'd ever thought of.

Spei caught the sarcastic bow the lieutenant gave him before walking away, but the Squire didn't care. He was more concerned for the Negaverse agent's victim. Even though the man was "only" a homeless guy, he was still a human being, a person. Who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

It was a bit of a struggle to flip the man over without further hurting him, further complicated by the fact he smelled like he hadn't had a shower in a year. Holding his breath, Spei finally managed to get the guy on his back – and what the Moon Squire saw made his heart sink. Somehow, in the chaos of the fight, the lieutenant had managed to take the man's starseed anyway; a glassy-eyed, slack-jawed expression was fixed on his unshaven face, a sure sign that he wasn't long for this world.

Bowing his head in defeat, Spei gently closed the man's eyes and stood. He'd have to figure out who that Negaverse lieutenant was and add him to his s**t list. In the meantime, he'd have to remember that the Negaverse played extremely dirty, not caring one bit about human life. With a deep sigh, he turned away from the dying vagrant and bounded away into the trees, where he powered down and headed home for the night.
