Aquamarine was not the gift-giving sort. He didn’t like people. He didn’t like forced kindness or false praise. He didn’t like small talk. He didn’t like social niceties or empty gestures or meaningless exchanges.

Yet he had organized this gift exchange. Thus, he only had himself to blame for the discomfort he felt in seeking out Jadarite.

Why had he done it? Even Aquamarine couldn’t quite say. It had seemed like a terrible idea from the very beginning, then slightly less terrible when Jet smiled about it. ********, but he had such a charming smile. Perhaps Aquamarine had grown a bit soft over the years. Perhaps he’d always been soft beneath all the snarling and glaring and swearing.

The very idea of it was sickening.

Well, there was only one thing left to do now.

Aquamarine came to a stop, knocked firmly, then announced his arrival. “Jadarite. It’s Aquamarine.” No point in keeping her guessing.

Most of what Jadarite knew about Aquamarine, she'd learned in the last few weeks. He was connected to Jet, the rising star of a General-King. He organized Thanksgiving meals and holiday gift exchanges. They'd never actually spoken, but that was likely the point of this. The Negaverse needed to be better connected.

So, Jadarite bought a gift, even though she wasn't much for holiday spirit.

"Aquamarine," she said, when he arrived. He would hear a few footsteps from inside of her office, and then the door swung open. "Come on in."

Her smile was practiced.

Her office was functional, but not overly decorated. It wasn't like she spent much time here anyway. Most of her meetings took place in team spaces. Much of the paperwork for her Infiltration projects, now that she'd gone back to focusing on videos, she could just do from her house. There were times when it was useful to have her own space, though, so here it was. There was a single fake plant on one corner of the desk, and a minimalist style clock and calendar on the back wall.

There was a present on the desk as well, wrapped in dark blue paper with a real fabric ribbon around it tied into a bow.

All Aquamarine knew of Jadarite was what he’d managed to observe during missions, and what he’d heard secondhand. He wasn’t impressed by her, but then he wasn’t impressed by anyone, so he met her with a flat look of indifference and stepped into her office with the briefest glance around.

Perhaps a bit overused to Cymophane’s obnoxious chirping and Albite’s equally obnoxious rambling, Aquamarine had been hoping that Jadarite would lead whatever conversation took place between them. Aquamarine could certainly talk one’s ear off when he got going, especially when he felt any sort of passion for a subject, but starting was not at all his strong suit.

So he held out the gift bag he carried — a deep ruby red stuffed with golden tissue paper, among which she would find several packages of high quality coffee beans and a $100 gift card to what his research had told him was a rather trendy cosmetic shop in town. Both far exceeded the $25 limit he’d loosely imposed on this exchange, but he was rich (now? again?) and did whatever he wanted regardless.

“Your gift,” he said in lieu of a Happy Holidays. In his experience, holidays weren’t always happy occasions.

Jadarite didn't mind the silence. She didn't mind conversation, either, most of the time, but so often it turned into people talking and talking without saying anything, and that part she disliked dealing with. It seemed that would not be a problem with Aquamarine, however.

She took the gift from him with a gracious smile and peeled back the tissue paper, a smile that softened slightly as she saw the brand of coffee. Her eyebrow only raised a millimeter when she reached the gift card and saw the value on it. Since Aquamarine was the one who had organized this gift exchange, she supposed there was no comment to be made about how so few people in the Negaverse could actually follow instructions. He was in charge. He could do what he wanted.

That thought was there anyway.

"This is perfect," she told him. "This place," she tapped the gift card with a long, red fingernail, "Has a few collections that I was looking at, and the cofee will get me through plenty of work."

She gave him one last appreciative nod and then reached for her own package.

She had kept to the budget, or at least close to it, and had given him a small pack of decent oil paint and a pack of brushes.

"Here," she said, handing it over.

Aquamarine didn’t shift his weight from foot to foot. He didn’t partake in any restless tapping of the feet or anxious twiddling of the thumbs. He stood stiff and stoic, far from relaxed, and probably visibly tense because of it, but he could always pass it off as formal precision.

“I can’t say I have much experience with cosmetics,” he said. Even Aquamarine could not determine if he’d meant it as a joke, so he didn’t expect Jadarite to know one way or the other.

He took the offered gift. Taking it back to his office to open on his own would’ve been more comfortable, but Jadarite had opened hers so it seemed rude not to do the same. Aquamarine was careful with the ribbon and the paper—neat, orderly, certain not to make a mess of it.

The gift itself didn’t come as much of a surprise given that he’d shared a few of his hobbies when he’d filled out the information form of his own design. He was glad for it and seemed to relax ever so slightly as the paints and brushes were revealed to him. Aquamarine preferred the expected. Surprises could be awkward. Aquamarine didn’t like awkward.

“Thank you,” he said, but had no idea how to express more than basic gratitude, so he didn’t try.

Formality was easy and comfortable in these types of situations. Jadarite was fine with that. She could have handled it if they'd sent her some upstart Lieutenant with no sense of propriety, but she would have had to be holding back far more eye rolls and harsh words.

"I wouldn't have been able to guess that you didn't know much about this," she side, eyeing the makeup that she'd gotten her once again. It was good quality. She'd take a closer look at the exact colors later, but it wasn't something she was going to nitpicking in front of her secret Santa.

"It's lovely."

However, she didn't feel the need to gush over it, either. She was taking her cues from Aquamarine, who didn't seem chatty.

She walked back to her seat, and sat back down cross-legged, setting her gifts from the other General in the spot where her presents had been at first. "Thank you," she said again, this time in a tone that sounded more like a dismissal.

I'm fine with short RP since they're both so direct?

“You’re welcome,” Aquamarine said.

He didn’t exactly like being dismissed by a fellow General, but he also wasn’t all that interested in lingering around, so he chose not to be offended by it and took the offered out with some gratitude. If Jadarite had no enthusiasm for further conversation, then Aquamarine would happily oblige. He wasn’t the social sort to begin with. They’d both done what they needed to. They didn’t have to make small talk or exchange pointless pleasantries.

Aquamarine could like her for that, if he let himself like anyone.

So it was that with a curt nod of acknowledgement, Aquamarine turned for the door and took his leave.
