Occupation: she went to the Fashion Institutes of Technology in NYC in her 20s, and now she’s an accomplished fashion designer. Her speciality is costume design, especially for the performing arts.

Hobbies:
Tabletop gaming--in 5e, her character is an aarakocra warlock with an affinity for fire spells. In Shadowrun, a human decker character required her to buy a ton of little d6 dice and she doesn’t have any regrets. The gaming group she plays with at the local game store is thinking about adding a Ravenloft game to the rotation, and she’s super excited at the idea of playing a reborn or hexblood bard from the College of Spirits. Lan’s been playing for years, owns nearly all 3e books… and then went and found them all on .pdf for 4 and 5e. She has a regular group she’s gamed with for quite a while and makes sure to carve out every Thursday night for whichever campaign is active at the time.

She will encourage you to come with her and you will have fun, she swears it.

Raving--another activity she’s enjoyed since her 20s, Lan is still more than able to break out the glowsticks and neon body paint and throw it down with the best of them. She has her favourite rave spots, but she can generally be found anywhere the beats are fast and the bass is loud. Compared to clubbing, she gets fewer disparaging comments about her age, and she likes the music better anyway. She’s perfectly aware of the reason for the stereotype about drugs at raves, however, and so she is also first aid certified and trained with naloxone.

Cooking--food is love, and Lan knows this perfectly well. She grew up with food as love and expresses this with her friends and family in turn. She has an impressive library of old cookbooks, to say nothing of her digital recipe library. If there’s a dish, she probably has the recipe card for how to make it. If not, she knows which auntie to ask about it. If you haven’t eaten that day, she Will show up to your house with a dish she knows you like.

Virtues:
Confident--in case her hobbies weren’t enough of a giveaway, Lan is not short on confidence! Self-doubt is not a problem she struggles with more than occasionally. Even then, not generally for very long. She thinks things through and is very thorough, and the result of this is that she has a lot of faith in the decisions she makes. Even when she’s wrong or experiences a setback, her confidence is rarely shaken for very long before she’s back at it.

Creative--she also does not lack in the creativity department. She’s creative in the artistic way–it’s why she went into fashion and costume design after all–but she’s also creative in the cognitive way! Thinking outside the box? There was never a box in the first place! Lan will devote whatever time she needs to a solution–even if that solution is a bit… unorthodox. Hey, it came out of left field, but it worked, didn’t it? You’re welcome!

Reliable--remember the bit about her showing up with food as soon as she knows you haven’t eaten that day? Lan is easy to count on to be there for the people she cares about. She also takes her word seriously and strives–sometimes to personal detriment–to keep every promise she makes. Early in her career, she gained a reputation for pulling out miracles in the eleventh hour. Even when she can’t for some reason follow through, she makes sure to tell the other party as soon as possible and be ready with a backup option or plan B.

Flaws:
Stubborn--Lan looked at the stereotype descriptions for Taurus and went ‘yeah, that tracks’. She’s creative, but creativity doesn’t necessarily translate to flexibility. Lan can be quite rigid in her thinking and patterns. She will stay on a problem, issue, or cause until she’s beaten it to death, whether or not doing so is actually advisable at that moment. You call it intractability, she calls it dedication. Either way, both of you are going to end up frustrated.

Martyr--Lan doesn’t generally appreciate it when her efforts to help are taken advantage of, ignored, or taken badly. That’s normal and okay. However, she takes it kind of hard and will sulk about it for quite some time, often blowing it to varying degrees out of proportion. She was only trying to help! Why are you being so ungrateful for all the hard work she put in? She can be a little dramatic sometimes when it comes to her efforts being rejected. It can take a patient friend or family member to restore her perspective on the issue.

Indulgent--Lan doesn’t see this as a problem really, but she can overdo it without thinking if she’s not careful. She likes having soft, luxurious fabrics and bright shiny metals and vibrant colours. She’s got enough sense not to run up her credit card bills into bankruptcy, but it’d be a lie to say she’s good at keeping them at zero. “I can’t take it with me,” is a common thing for her to say with a shrug as she slides her credit card or hands over a couple twenties. She understands a budget, but it’s really more of a suggestion than a requirement for her, more often than not.

Clothes: you’d think she’d be dressed to the nines as a fashion and costume designer. You would be surprised when you see her instead in a pair of slouchy jeans and a tank top, or in a pair of cutoffs with a vintage cardigan, hair in a messy bun with sewing needles held gingerly in her teeth with fabric measuring tape around her shoulders. She dresses for comfort and prefers to mend her clothes rather than get new ones whenever possible, so the odd patch here or there would also not be out of place. Obviously she has nice clothes for when they’re needed, but they’re not what she wears every day.
