She had Dering back in her life, and honestly…Stirling felt as though that was all she really needed to try and go on from here. It was someone. Someone she hadn’t expected to get back, and so it gave her hope. Hope and strength, and now all she needed was some more food. Her supplies had run out for now, and while she had some snacks left, she was itching for something warm...which.

Just meant a trip to the 7-11, and it was dark enough out that she thought Todd would be there, but…not being completely sure, the Knight dropped her galmour and walked the last two blocks to the store.

Walking in, she saw that indeed, the…would be careless, but saw everything cashier was working behind the counter, and this time, she walked up to him, hesitating only for a moment.

“Hi. I’m sure that you remember me, but like. I have some money. Just…not enough to waste on all of the things that I want…I. I’m in a super real bind and I’m hoping you could help me out again? Like, this is the place that’s really kept me going, since you helped me out last time. I’m like. Needing enough things for a week or so? Kind of on my own right now and…you know. Struggling.”

Brooklyn gave a shrug and a small, not quite fragile smile but. “And honestly, don’t call the cops or anything or CPS, I’m on the run from CPS. They had me in this godawful place and the foster family I was with before dumped me there so I’m just. On my own. And I want to keep it that way.

Todd gave the familiar face that hadn't been seen in awhile a friendly bob of the head and was going to give a semi-joking I got my eyes on you gesture when she approached the counter with that look. A fight or flight instinct not unlike the one he felt for people in costumes had him freezing in place, a terrified but customer-friendly smile across his features.

By the time she'd finished talking, though, the cashier relaxed. Like, this was a lot? But also it wasn't like, an emotional demand. Instead it was a situation he was semi-familiar with. Not the CPS and foster stuff (******** rough, kid) but the struggling to survive part he understood and could even, without too much awkwardness or commitment, help a bit.

"Okay, that's a lot," he drawled, not bothering to hide that opinion. "So you shouldn't tell people, especially older guys, what sort of vulnerable situation you're in now. Just stick to, like, I need a deep discount on food. That sort of thing."

It was hard to ignore how small, young, and trying her best the kid was. There were hotcase things she could have at the end of his shift. And some expired, but still decent, shelf items in the back she could take. But a week's worth? And then what would happen the week after this one?

With a deep sigh, he asked, "What do you know about couponing?"

“I’m not stupid. If I didn’t know you I wouldn’t have spilled all of that, I do know how to watch my back…but you’re sharper than most, and I trust you. A little. Enough. I guess. Anyway. Couponing? Not too much…but like. The place I’m staying isn’t really…anywhere close that I can get ahold of a newspaper or anything like either…and there’s no wifi…and I don’t have a phone anymore so…the idea of extreme couponing sounds neat, like I’ve seen youtubes with it before but…I’m not sure it’s going to really work in my specific situation.”

Brooklyn ran her hands through her hair and looked around, her stomach rumbling at the sight of the hotdogs on the rollers and she hesitated. “...Would you absolutely despise me if I took one of those right now?”

She was way too confident in her ability to judge people, but it's not like Todd could argue when, this time at least, she'd been right. Scowling like she hadn't just given him a pretty nice compliment, he tapped the counter with his index finger, truly showcasing its chipped paint and doodle tattoo glory. "You can have one after we're done talking."

His tone was lazy as usual, but holding a more serious edge than he usually bothered with, "You're thinking in the short term, and I get why long term doesn't feel realistic. But if you don't get out of that mindset, this is a situation you're going to find yourself in again and again."

Lecturing a starving child? Possibly an orphan? Who'd just asked for help and claimed to trust him was...not the greatest feeling. "I can give you some under the table work, odd jobs and whatever. However often you're able...but only my shifts, okay?" The rest were way more prone to accidents of some sort or another, except Morgan, who 1) barely showed up and 2) always felt like an accident waiting to happen to someone else. "I don't really have much in the way of cash to pay you, but you can have the stale hotcase stuff when we refresh it. And I can give you an envelop of coupons and tell you how to get a week's worth of groceries for under ten bucks."

He paused and added, "If you need a place to stay...mine isn't available. But there are some empty apartments in my building, if you don't mind the cats or the lack of electricity." it wasn't the best, but just in case she was living in a tent or, god forbid, a cardboard box in the winter.

“Hell yeah! That honestly sounds amazing to me. I’m sure I could make that happen, and coming here on your shifts is like, the goal of life anyway…even though I’d be able to get away with things under others, I bet.” She grinned and waggled her eyebrows, putting on far more bravado than she felt, but the idea of coupons and food and Todds help was…

Honestly a huge relief. “Tell me your schedule, like…I know it’s overnights or at least super late but…what days are best for you? Does it change based on the week? Like…” Chewing her lip at the thought, Brooklyn hoped it wasn’t the case…that would make things tricky, for she couldn’t really…keep in contact with him while she was up on Stirling but…

“Wait really? Your place just…allows squatters? I don’t need electricity or mind cats at all. All cats do is look bute, sometimes bite you and meow pathetically…and I love that for them.”

She hesitated. “But. Hell yeah. You’ve got yourself a deal with the rest of the things you’ve offered.” It sounded almost too good to be true but…maybe it really just was good.

Writing down his schedule on the back of paper sale sign, Todd replied, "Allow isn't really the world for it. Ignore as long as you make yourself easy to ignore is more the vibe." He added the building address along with the numbers of the empty apartments he knew of that weren't next to the building's skeevy types, and his own apartment number labelled ONLY in case of emergency.

And then, finally, he started pulling the stuff from the hotcase, including the hotdog she'd been eyeing. It was an hour early to pull stuff but like, whatever. It's not like he'd lose Employee of the Month over it.

Todd scanned the barcodes as outdates and put everything into a plastic bag, all with his typical sleepy apathy toward life, the universe, and orphaned children. He put all his psychic energy into emitting that he wasn't doing anybody any favors and absolutely was not a nice person who helped people.

Brooklyn pocketed the information he gave her and nodded, looking and feeling rather relieved that she would have a place to crash in the case that she couldn’t get back up to Stirling. It was…a big comfort and weight off of her shoulders, and as she watched Todd get everything else ready for her, she held her thanks. She could see that he didn’t want to hear it, and she was tough. She didn’t have to act helpless…she wasn’t helpless and honestly, she figured that was the reason that he was helping her so much.

When all of the items were packed, she reached out and took them. “I’ll see you around then. I really am thankful, and I’ll do my best not to take too much advantage of you.”

Not that she thought he’d really let her. He had put his cards on the table and they were all good cards. All she needed to really do was keep up with her end of the bargain.

“See you when I see you, Todd. Thanks again.”

And without waiting for anything else from him, or for him to have the chance to change his mind about anything…she scampered out of the store.

It was time to go back up to space anyway…and now she had some more food to eat so…

All was well.
