In the year 2040, the Earth was on the verge of another World War. It was discovered that the world would run out of fossil fuel (oil) within half a decade at the current rate. Soon after that, scientists have predicted that other natural resources will run out and the conditions on Earth will become unsuitable for habitation. In order to maintain their grip on the economy, the Eligius Corporation plotted out habitable worlds. The problem was that to get to those worlds and survive, humans would need to be able to metabolize radiation at much higher level as well as transmit back copious amounts of data. Nightbloods and mind drives were created to solve these problems.
By 2050, the problems that humans faced continued to get much worse. Crop failures, super viruses, rolling blackouts...and that was just a few of the struggles that Earth faced. The need for solutions both domestic and intergalactic had humans racing for more inventions. So the same team of scientists that solved how to transport and store vast amounts of data as well as created the first Nightbloods, designed something else. It was an AI programmed that they named A.L.I.E (Applied Lucent Intelligence Emulator). Unfortunately the main scientist set the program to try and help the problems that human faced in the race for survival. That's because that A.L.I.E deduced that it was overpopulation which was the real danger to human survival.
A.L.I.E calculated the best way to reduce the population - mass geocide. The team of scientists tried to stop A.L.I.E from initiating the plans for a nuclear apocalypse. In order to try and stop A.L.I.E, the head scientist went up to their space station Polaris to create something that would shut the original program down. She was too late; A.L.I.E got into the world's nuclear systems and fired them off.
In 2052, People all over the world die off by the millions in the event that the survivors on the ground would call Praimfaya.

Thirteen Space Stations orbiting Earth watched as their home was soaked in radiation. They listened as communication crackled and died out. They watched as the lights all turned off. And everyone held their breath. The survivors in space searched for answers. And when they came upon the truth of what happened everyone feared the ramifications of what A.L.I.E 2.0 meant and so they did what humans do best when they're afraid - they pulled together and attacked.
The union was dissolved once the Polaris station was destroyed. Little did they know that the lead scientist on the project was able to escape back to Earth and brought some of her technology with her.
With the current main threat eradicated, the stations kept orbiting Earth. They stayed separated from each other but kept communication up. some of the station combined as others failed. Over a hundred years the 12 surviving space stations shrank down into 4 large stations orbiting Earth.
It may seem like a dream to many to live in space. The reality was anything but. Everything is rationed - food, water, clothes, everything. Wasting resources is a crime. Procreation is limited to just one kid per couple. Having any more is a crime. And every crime, no matter how small, is punishable by death unless you're under the age of majority. Those who are under the age of majority of their station get thrown into jail and who's behavior, crime, and potential would be reviewed upon reaching adulthood. As the years went on the percent of those pardoned for their 'childhood' crimes fell....
By the year 2152, even these 4 stations were running out of resources. Most had system failures too often to ignore. And so the 4 Stations finally made plans to Unify. They came together on October 1st, 2159. The real reason they did this was so that they could pool resources and population in order to undertake a dangerous mission. They were going to send people to the ground to see if it is survivable.
108 years after the Earth faced nuclear Apocalypse...they were sending 100 adolescents to the ground for the good of Humanity.

As this roleplay is taking place on gaia, please follow the TOS while on this site. Even while you're on discord please show everyone the respect they deserve by keeping away from topics or discussions that someone may have said will make them uncomfortable.

Just let us know if something big happens so we can be as sensitive as one can be across the internet. I can't stress this enough but communication and loyalty are the keys to keeping a roleplay alive. Both are equally important. Which is why I've set up a discord server for this roleplay. It is important that it's used as this will be the place where notices and updates will be placed. You do not need to participate in the voice options if you are not comfortable with that.

This is a literate roleplay. That does not mean that I will expect monster sized posts out of everyone - though that may happen from time to time. I do ask that you give a minimum of twelve complete sentences per post. I also ask that you have three basic things in them aside from your writing - a picture of your character, their name, and a general location.
I will not be stringent on how often you need to post. In fact, I will be more than happy with one post a week. What I like to see more is loyalty. Stick with us and we'll stick by you...that's the mentality I like. Of course, you may get poked every once in a while for a post if you haven't but I understand that life isn't always at your leisure.

Amounts - Each roleplayer is limited to two characters. You may only have one Grounder.
Images - We're using real images as face claims. Pick one that you think represents your character. Make sure that it hasn't already been used by another character (unless that's a plot point).
Roles - Keep their knowledge and skills to that role. Please make sure they have weaknesses or areas that they don't know much or anything about.
Backgrounds - For your character's backgrounds and personalities... I want to remind you that you don't want to purposefully isolate your character and thus yourself. This is a roleplay. Our goal is to write together. Characters that would not work with another person, seek people out, or be recruited tend to be the ones isolated. Just keep that thought in mind while you make your character.
Extra Considerations - Please discuss with the mods if you would like for your character to have anything extra or special such as technology or the like. Nightbloods will be decided behind the scenes in a lotto.

The 4 remaining stations have recently come together to form the ARK. Prior to coming together, they salvaged and cannibalized the failed stations over the years so that the new structure is just as large as though the twelve stations had come together years ago. There is a population of about four thousand people aboard with an average of 1,000 people from the four remaining stations.
The North American Alliance was made out of the Canadian and United States stations. The European Nation was made out of the United Kingdom, Russian, and Italian stations. The Asian Union was made out of the Chinese, Japanese, and Indian Stations.The South American Coalition was made out of the Brazilian, Argentinean, Chile, Venezuelan stations.

The Alpha ship, containing 50 citizens from the newly joined Stations, landed off course. Instead of landing at Mount Weather, the Alpha ship landed in the middle of a forest in an area that used to be called Maryland. There are plenty of trees, plants, and animals that frequent the area.
The Beta ship, containing 50 citizens from the newly joined Stations, landed off course. Instead of landing at Mount Weather, the Beta ship landed right next to a river in an area that used to be called Maryland. The area around the river is rocky but has plenty of trees further back from the water's edge.

After crash landing onto Earth and being split into two groups, a couple people will eventually venture away from their respected areas and find a middle point between the two drop ships. The main structure is two stories tall, with one section in the middle reaching three stories. It is made, primarily, out of concrete with a couple of windows and skylights. There are many rooms which used to be various shops as well as an entire food court. While there may be some larger permanent fixtures still left, all resources have been scavenged. On the outside the forest seems to have taken the mall back, making it hard to spot from a distance.
