The times she'd encountered Borax as an enemy, he'd always been alone. Of course, Hestia had been as well, leading her to assume that they were both rather solitary when it came to what she tried to consider a patrol, and what he undoubtedly thought of as a hunt. It was a difference that should still, even now, feed into dislike and distrust of the man. But there was an honesty to it, and to him in this context.

So when, periodically, he'd decide to step out with Hestia on her trips to gather energy, she was almost surprised by her lack of resistance. Besides, she was never one to dislike a performance review, even if this one, with her slow and gentle siphoning of energy, with the lack of starseeds in hand, didn't merit the sort of perfection she generally worked hard to achieve.

It was oddly peaceful between them since her corruption, outside of the occasional spar and his continued resistance to the idea of her hand in his chest. Borax couldn't make her take starseeds, but in turn, Hestia didn't try to stop him. In some ways, the smiling ruthlessness of him on these nights felt more comfortable than his friendly and polite assistance during the day.

It was very quiet tonight, and she was just about to suggest a small tea break when she noticed a pair of small, shining dice near the hand of the comatose body at their feet.

His preference had been to patrol alone.

There were certainly advantages to being in numbers. Being in the Negaverse had quickly taught him that their numbers were everywhere and plentiful, and why not tap into that? Perhaps it was arrogance, though, that kept him coming out on a solo path. Perhaps, as an alternative, it was just proof. It had been proof that he was strong on his own, proof that he could handle everything that was thrown in front of him, and proof that he would never need to beg for assistance from those considered to be his superiors. He didn't avoid partnering up in its entirety, but he found he preferred a certain rhythm that most potential partners lacked.

There was something different, though, to patrolling with a recruit. For one, it was his way of keeping an eye on them. If he was going to be a captain, here, bringing in people for his purposes and for the Negaverse's needs, he needed to prove his mettle. It was mostly to make sure they gave him more power.

Borax was prideful, but not impossibly so.

Keeping an eye on Hestia was easy. She was reluctant to take starseeds at best, but she was a diligent energy collector and never interfered with any method he took to extract his energy or a starseed or three. There was something darkly fulfilling about that, especially considering the lengths she had gone to take a starseed from him the first time.

Looked like he was fine to hold a soul between his teeth as a taunt this time.

"See something?" Borax twirled his spear idly. "You're a bit closer to the ground."

The thought of tea dried up, rapidly turning to a clear desire to fight the man and they could just see who was closer to the ground in the end. It was written in all caps across her expression that, before she could open her mouth to suggestion as much, soon disappeared. Right along with the rest of her.

Hestia looked around the area, black but for the path of squares, and noticed the die at her feet that had followed along. Picking it up, she saw Borax not too far away in his own square, with his own path. Rolling the cube in her hand, Hestia gave it a speculative look that she shifted over to the agent. "Care to play a game, Captain Borax?"

A little smirk spread on his lips at the way the smaller of the two looked at him like she could melt paint off a wall. Too bad for her that he was fully unbothered, really--

What did bother him was suddenly being elsewhere else.

It wouldn't have bothered him so much if it came with the comforting envelopment of chaos. He would have figured it was Faustite wanting his attention, or perhaps one of the generals who had not realized not to pull on him just yet--he'd break out of that s**t eventually--but no. It was some ******** hallway, a die, and Hestia.

This felt like a cruel joke.

"Not really," he replied, dryly, squatting down to pick up the game piece at his feet. This wasn't even the type of game he preferred. A straight line was the worst maze he had ever ******** heard of. "Seems we weren't left with a goddamn choice in the matter, though."

Destiny City was in some ways better before he knew about the magical bullshit.

She gave an audible little sniff, and in the back of her mind, filed away that he didn't seem to thrilled. Not as alarmed as he had been to be transported suddenly to space, but not very happy either. There was a constant series of lists in her head, noting people's various comforts and discomforts, and in general, they were used to the benefit of those around her. But there was always another side to such things, wasn't there?

With a flick of her wrist she tossed the die forward and watched it ricochet off an invisible wall, and back to her feet. Three pips stared up at her and then she was snatched the thing up again, a gentle but insistent urging at her back that she move forward. Three squares, a clear and simple little game.

Right up until the fog rolled in, obscuring everything from sight.

"Are you still there, Captain Borax?"

She couldn't tell which way was forward and back anymore.

'What did you roll?" She found herself hoping it was something lower than her.

His roll didn't get him very far, honestly. It got Hestia further away from him, which came as both a blessing and a curse--he knew she didn't have anything to do with this, but he also didn't know what did.

Teleportation wasn't really working either, which wasn't funny.

Was he on some kind of ******** display? What was this place, a one-sided mirror into flailing humans for some alien creature? Some bullshit joke from their superiors--Hessonite, maybe, since this didn't really seem like the s**t Faustite, Axinite, or Lepidolite would pull? What the ******** was laughing at him, and why did he only hear it between his ears?

Was it Hestia? Was she mocking him from her place in front of him?

The nerve.

His eye twitched as he groused in response, "Over here." If one of those mocking faces would show themselves, he would run them through.

Square 7

It took getting down on the ground and crawling on her knees to find the die after rolling it and then the exit side of the square. Finally out of the fog, she stood up, brushed off her apron, and pretended that didn't just happen right on the heels of that closer to the ground comment. She made a brief show of trying to see the Captain ahead of her. Then she turned her head as she walked forward, and gave him a look of solemn concern.

"Try not to fall too far behind, Captain."

Was she smug? Maybe a smidge, it was too early to award herself a solid victory, after all. Stepping into the next square there was a sound overhead that had become increasingly familiar as of late. Her little bat companion had stayed in tonight, as it often did when Borax was present. Hestia didn't mind the creatures' presence and was ready to toss the die again when suddenly she was overwhelmed by their intense, collective screeching.

From his vantage point, Borax would see her suddenly crouching down and inward, head clutched between her hands.
