“What would you think about me going to stay on Alastor for a while?” Peter asked as he worked on cutting up a cucumber for their salad that night. He’d been living with Haven for over a year now -- since his father died and he needed to hide away from the world. He felt useless in a lot of respects, but Haven, despite once being his rival, never made him feel like he wasn’t enough.
“I mean… I know you have skating, so if you wanted to come with me. Or… if you wanted me to wait a while longer,” he shrugged, brushing off the cutting board with the knife he was using and moving on to the tomatoes.
“There’s a lot of things to sort through there. Artifacts. Weapons. Things that might be useful,” he tried to explain, knowing that there was a lot to think about.
He hadn’t just been lazing around, though. He’d been doing work. Research for his internships. Still studying youma and trying to figure out a way to help Caedus… which…
“I wish I knew what to do about Caedus…”

At the stove taking the chicken out of the pan, Haven turned away briefly to hide a small smile. Understandably, Peter had not quite been himself since his father’s death, but every once in a while there were glimmers of the boy he used to be. Hearing him broach multiple subjects at once always reminded her of when he was an excitable kid.
“Going to Alastor’s probably the easier subject, so let’s start there,” she said. “How long is a while? I could maybe join you for a day or two between competitions, but…” This was the busier time of year for her. Haven loved it and regretted it in equal measure. “I don’t know. I’d like to go and help when I can.”
It was right up her alley, even if the timing wasn’t perfect. Their schedules had been the complete opposite of one another for a while now. Peter was busy over the summer with his internships. Haven was busy over the fall and winter with training, competing, and finishing up her degree in between. It made making plans together rather difficult. Their situation wouldn’t always be this way, Haven knew; for the time being they simply had to work with the time they had the best they could.
“Would you be alone if I can’t go? Or would Alastor be staying with you?”

Had things been different, Peter might have taken the opportunity to make a joke in response to her asking how long a while was. But while the thought crossed his mind, he didn’t have the stomach to make such silly, inside or niche jokes at the moment.
“It would depend on Devyn, I think. It’ll probably take him some time to get enough energy to make the trip from Earth to Alastor. He might be working with some cats to figure out better transportation methods but… who knows how successful that will be. So… less than a week should work if Devyn is with us.”
He already felt like he was rambling, trying to explain what little he understood in a way that made sense.
“I was thinking… more long term. Eventually. At least a week or two. Maybe more than that, depending on what work I can find to do there. I might have a cat or two with me, and I’m sure Devyn would stop in to make sure everything was okay as much as possible.”
With the tomatoes done, Peter dumped everything into a bowl that already had lettuce in it.
“I don’t like the idea of being away from you for that long, but I know you’ll be busy and we’ll hardly see each other anyway.”

“I’ll be fine,” Haven reassured him. She could look after herself—at home and at the rink especially, but out in Destiny City as a senshi, too, even if she often found herself wishing for Oberon’s presence when things went south. The months since the incident at the bank had been quiet, at least. Hopefully the year would end in a similar fashion.
“I’ll be more worried about you getting into trouble up there,” she countered, only half joking. “Let me know when you narrow down a timeframe and I’ll see if I can fit in some time to join you. I’d like to see more of Alastor if I can.”
She’d like to see more of space in general, but there were often things holding her back. Not just her obligations on Earth, which didn’t always get in the way. Sometimes she was simply too uncertain. She felt undeserving of the honor, even when it came to her own world. She’d been a Chibi senshi for so long, and now a Super senshi for almost two years. Her commitment would never be comparable to Peter’s, even if she wasn’t lacking in interest or enthusiasm.
Maybe one day things would be different, once she’d given up on the dreams Earth had inspired in her.
“Do you think Caedus might like to go?” she asked as she filled two plates with food, figuring the two topics might not be so different after all. “If Earth isn’t the solution to his problem, maybe something in space is.”

See, Peter knew Haven would be fine, but that didn’t mean he had to like the idea of leaving her behind, especially when she’d put up with him for so long. He clicked his tongue to the roof of his mouth, but didn’t comment on it further. She was capable, and he trusted her to stay out of trouble as much as possible. She was smart and resourceful.
But she was at least agreeable. He felt a little more relieved for that. And he nodded to make sure she knew he heard her. He would just have to coordinate with Devyn. Surely the Mauvians could figure something out to help them, right?
He paused in mixing the salad when she brought Caedus back to the conversation. He’d been the one to mention him, and while he’d only seen him frequently enough to make sure he had enough to eat and supplies to survive, and offers of places for him to stay… he still wasn’t sure what Caedus’s plans were.
“I could ask him,” he said, because he hadn’t really considered taking Caedus off world. Mostly because there weren’t as many conveniences as there were on Earth. But he’d also lived in the Rift for a thousand years, so what was the difference if he was on another planet without twenty-four seven fast food?
“Obviously I’ll ask Devyn what he thought about it, first.” He wasn’t going to invite Caedus to a world that wasn’t his own. “Thanks, Haven. That’s a good idea,” he said as he turned to face her, already missing her even though he hadn’t even planned out when he would be leaving.

“Sometimes I have those,” Haven joked. “Not always, though. As far as we know, it could turn out to be a waste of time, but at this point maybe anything’s worth the effort. It can’t hurt too much, at least.”
She hoped. The subject of Caedus was never an easy one to navigate. She knew Peter’s opinion, as well as her own, but others were a bit less open to the possibility of a better solution than they were. That they had no clue what to try or where to begin didn’t help matters. It was a bit like wandering around in the dark without a light.
Even so, Haven chose to remain optimistic. Cautiously, because the war could go south at any moment, but optimistic all the same.
She brought the plates of food to the small kitchen dining table, setting them down before moving to get the both of them something more to drink than water.
“You’ll let me know if you need any help?” she said. “I don’t want you to not tell me things just because I have competitions coming up.”

“I’ll let you know,” Peter promised. He was working on getting out the utensils and setting them down on the table. He had a lot to think about, but it was a relief to know that Haven still had his back after all these years.
Especially now that he needed someone to just confide in while he was being depressed and miserable.
Who knew he’d turn into his brother?
“I want to make it to your competitions too. So let me know when you’re planning to travel so we can coordinate. You know I can hop on any flight I need to,” he said but probably didn’t need to remind her. He wanted to support her as much as she supported him.
And then once they had things worked out, they could do some treasure hunting together.
