Alfina couldn't help herself! Every time she passed a reflective surface, she would take a moment to peek at it. Not that she really needed it though. Her hair was long enough to see as she walked. She couldn't stop touching it since she had woken up that morning. That morning.. she had discovered her hair was different. It was vibrant. It was beautiful!

Not that she had disliked the hair she'd been born with, but this was so fresh and rich. Her skin had shifted undertones to match the hair, her whole body freshened up with warmth. It had surprised and concerned her at first, but she had quickly fallen in love with it.

It was too bad that others in town didn't seem as pleased with their changes. In fact, she'd heard far too much talk of families disowning loved ones thinking they'd been possessed by the dead...

Updated Colors

It was rare that Erebus could easily leave the home, but the family manor was in an uproar ever since several members of the family and staff had woken up with changes. Even the family patriarch had seemingly different colored skin, something more pale that before, and healers had been called in to look over him. While the staff and the family were occupied, Erebus sought to go out of the house alone to deal with his changes. He had woken up to a different visage, his golden eyes now more green and his crystals darker than before. Was he cursed like others? It seemed half the town was buzzing with that type of worry so even he didn't know how to fully deal with things.

Fresh air though had sounded nice and he had wanted to go towards the local bookstore anyways to grab some tomes and maps. Secretly, Erebus was saving the best that he could while helping to fund a small business with one of the servants so that one day he could travel out of Yael and towards Zena once a new heir was born. So why not grab some more materials to prepare himself for that day while he could easily move around? The very thought brought a small smile to his lips, a rare expression, but then it quickly faded away as some children rushing by in a panic forced him to stumble into a stranger.

Alfina was torn between wanting to figure out why she had changed, and also wanting to simply enjoy the changes in blissful ignorance. What if it was something bad? She was no scholar. It wasn't likely that she would figure out anything that those more learned could not. She was no priestess, and wouldn't be able to decipher any clues from those teachings. She should just leave it to-

"Oh!" She felt herself start to fall from the unexpected push. She reached out without thinking to grab at anything to stabilize herself, and her fingers tangled with the sleeve of the very stranger that had bumped her. She pulled herself against him with a small gasp when she finally found her feet and felt her cheeks heat up as she looked up into such strangely colored eyes. "Oh- I- sorry!"

"Are you alright, miss?" Erebus had tried to shy his gaze away but it was already too late, the other Yaeli had already caught sight of his eyes. Not that they blended in before the change, but Erebus was especially worried about them after the colors shifted from that deep golden hue to something more akin to green. Still, he felt no need to be rude towards a stranger who had done nothing purposefully wrong against him and so he didn't complain as he waited for her to steady herself.

"It's a bit chaotic today so accidents are bound to happen. No apologies needed, I know you didn't bump into me on purpose." He offered as an afterthought, a small smile being forced on his lips as strange as the action felt. If anything those children...well then again they were also in a panic, thinking they were cursed by spirits. The very thought made his stomach twist into a knot. Spirits and gods...all were cruel creatures, weren't they? It was the reason he was sneaking around like this while his own family was in a panic from the changes.

She tore her gaze away from those fascinatingly bright eyes and took a step back. "Yes, I'm alright. Thank you." Thank goodness it seemed at least one other person wasn't running around in a panic. A hand unconsciously rose to once again fiddle with the strands of her hair in a self-soothing manner. The other's reassurances certainly put her at ease as well, and she allowed a smile to rise. "It certainly is a bit of a mess out here," she agreed. "It'll probably be a while before it calms down at all, too. I came out this morning hoping for a peaceful walk before work. Perhaps I should have taken the long route through the woods instead."

"That's a relief." Erebus admitted, his shoulders relaxing slightly at the woman's reassurance. The last thing he wanted was to cause a commotion, especially since he already felt quite out of place as it was. Most would probably think him the culprit in any situation, his hybrid heritage making him a target for the more superstitious of Yaeli. And then if such news arrived back home? Well, he would be in for some additional lessons for certain.

"I see." He replied after a moment, blinking in surprise at the fact that she was still lingering around and actually conversing with him. Most would have scurried away at the sight of his eyes...strange. But not unwelcome even if he still felt wary about the whole situation. "The woods may have been a good option, especially if you are keen on herbs. There's some wild flowers that make good calming teas and soothing lotions if you were afflicted by the pollen." Erebus knew that it had made his own skin itchy, the hybrid hating every moment that he tossed and turned the last couple of nights. "Though the bookstore may be quiet as well, do you think?" If it wasn't then he may have to change his own path and go to the woods for a moment of peace as well.

While she wasn't quite as superstitious as many Yaeli, she still very much took notice of things that were strange and out of place. Alfina's gaze shifted away to stop herself from staring again. Curious and wary she may be, but impolite she would not! "Actually, it was just the quiet I wanted. I was affected, and it was irritating last night," she tugged her hair again as a silent indicator, "but now I feel.. I feel good, actually." A tiny smile flickered briefly.

She looked up with interest at the offer of the store, and away again. "I'm sure you're right. Herbalists must be scouring the woods by now for such herbs. The bookstore is probably the best option for a peaceful spot." She dared to peek up at those odd eyes again. "I don't want to disturb you if that's where you were going though."

"Ah, is that so?" Erebus rubbed at the back of his neck as he listened to the Yaeli girl. "It's not as if I can forbid someone from entering a public space." He answered finally, a small smile on his lips. Plus, it wouldn't be awful to have some company if it could help prevent others from simply staring or scurrying away from him. There was so much panic right now that the last thing he wanted was for someone to think to point a finger towards him for their changes, that much Erebus had realized after watching a few fights breaking out around them. As long as it wasn't someone from his own household then it could be beneficial to have a companion for once.

"It probably is for the best if we head there soon." He added as another pair started yelling across the street. "If you're alright sharing the space, that is." Erebus turned the question towards her, that small smile still on his lips as he offered his hand to guide her down the street.

She blinked with a pause before her cheeks heated up with bashful amusement. "Well, no, I suppose you can't, really. I guess I just thought.." She chewed her lip for a bashful moment. Her self esteem had been faltering as of late, but to think she might not be wanted that much.. The man didn't seem to think anything wrong with sharing space with her, and a smile rose again. "I guess I was just being silly."

The yelling made Alfina look up and flinch away. She would definitely rather not be out here where things were so volatile. "I-I don't mind sharing space at all," she assured. The offered hand surprised her, but she felt herself relax and gently set her hand onto his. "My name's Alfina. If I may, what do you think of your changes? If you had any, of course." She couldn't help a quick peek at his strange eyes again. Was that new to him?

"I mean I suppose others think I could curse a space to prevent them from entering." Erebus acknowledged, gesturing towards his eyes for a moment even as he realized she had been avoiding looking directly at him since she realized the difference. "Mixed blood tends to make others look upon one differently, at least among the Yaeli." It was freeing to make such a statement, especially since such talk was mostly forbidden in his family manor. While his grandfather would discuss the topic with him, mostly lectures to keep him in the shadows, others preferred to force the servants to act as if everything was normal while dealing with their hidden heir. A strange and frustrating situation indeed.

Erebus took the hand, admittedly enjoying the contact more than he expected since it was rare for anyone to want to approach him let alone touch him, and he only paused for a moment at the question. "My eyes were golden before but they're more of a green hue now. My crystals appear a bit more grayish, if anything. How about you? Any changes to note?" He asked, the hybrid guiding them around the crowd and being careful to make sure to allow plenty of room between them and those running about the street. Thankfully though the bookshop was only around the corner and Erebus didn't hesitate as he went towards the door to open it for them.

She couldn't help the self-consciously apologetic turn of her bashful smile. So it was true! He was a hybrid! Of course, that didn't excuse her bouts of staring. "You're not wrong. We do tend to be adverse to anything, or anyone, that is different. ..Different is not always bad though." After all, there was a lot more 'different' hanging around on Yeal these days. The natives were just going to have to get used to it.

Her free hand rose to curl the end of a lock of her hair again. "My hair changed, and my skin. They're both warmer tones than before. I think that's it." With a little skip in her step to hurry into the shop, Alfina took a deep breath and sighed with relief. As expected, the shop was calmer than the ruckus outside. "Much better."

"Oh?" Erebus actually blinked in surprise before looking at his companion. "You truly think that? That's....well rare to hear around here at least." Most thought it was asking for bad luck to still mingle with foreigners, especially if you were producing an offspring with one. Needless to say there weren't too many Yaeli hybrids in the city, at least not that Erebus knew. Then again he was mostly hidden at home so maybe he was wrong? At least this interaction was showing him that things weren't completely against him, not with the other Yaeli sticking with him instead of running off.

"I see. A subtle change that keeps your lovely features." Mused Erebus, a slight blush decorating his cheeks as the thought escaped his lips. "But it is much quieter in here, no? I think I'll be off towards the back to study some maps and see what other accounts there are about the outside lands. Maybe there'll be some mention of mysterious pollen in there." He coughed to clear his throat, avoiding his embarrassment, before letting go of the hand and moving forward towards the back end of the shop.

Alfina nodded while keeping her eyes shyly down. She liked to think she took after her father a little in that regard. She wasn't inclined to explore the outside world as he did, but she was willing to accept it when the outside world came to her; within reason of course. Perhaps that was thinking too much of herself though... "I think most of us are getting better about different. There's still far to go though."

A surprised and pleased flush colored her cheeks at the compliment. Considering her concerns for how her family and associates would react to her changes, it was especially comforting to hear. Even if Erebus had never seen her before the changes... "E-enjoy your reading," she stuttered out. "And, thank you."

Having come with no intentions outside of finding a quiet place to think, Alfina let out a slow breath. Maybe a nice book would be worth looking at in one of those cozy chairs?

Erebus paused at the statement, a smile of appreciation slowly crossing his lips at the thought. "We can only hope they keep going forward then." He mused quietly as they continued forward into the bookstore. He simply nodded at the thanks, Erebus giving a small wave as they went their separate ways. "You as well." At least in here there was some quiet, a peaceful respite from the chaos still unfolding on the streets outside with those adapting to their new changes.
