Quote: Magic Mushrooms (11) - Peppering the roof of the cave, the walls, and even some pockets of cool, packed dirt, these strange mushrooms range from the size of peas to grapefruits and have a round cap that seems to vary greatly in terms of height, width, and shape. They have soft, resilient gills, and stems that are either short and stout or tall and narrow. These mushrooms have an odd, natural bioluminescence across their whole form. There has been some enthusiastic debate about what causes this, but the general understanding is that it’s perfectly natural. The mushrooms are able to grow in this area due to the mineral content in the waters, the cool, dark environment, the rich soil, and the unique makeup of the plants and trees in the area. The mushrooms are unique in their brightness. If removed from the area, they can glow for a few hours before they will eventually fade and begin to deteriorate. While these mushrooms may be kept in small quantities, it requires great effort to keep them alive outside of the cave. And why would you want to? The mushrooms have a bitter flavor and consuming them can result in stomach pains–if you can even keep them down long enough. If there’s a way to cook these, or do anything at all with them, no one’s found it yet. This was something that she did not want to keep to herself. This was something that science demanded that she share. There was a new, unrecorded species of mushroom within the borders of Destiny City, one that either had a unique biology among any other Earth mushrooms, or else was changed by magic. It meant that Naeria was practically vibrating out of her skin, and also that she needed a second opinion. A close friend who she shared secrets with seemed best to be the first person to show, and so she’d convinced Andreyia to come with her. Also, since she’d found a youma in the cave with the mushrooms the first time around, it seemed prudent to bring a friend who also was a Commander, and so she’d managed to get Andreyia to come with her. “They glow,” she told him as they arrived at the scene, a brightness to her smile that only showed up in very specific situations that involved mushrooms, Portabella, or Steve. Andreyia could find ways to make her happy, too, but right now he wasn’t having to try very hard. “I need to collect samples, and if you are interested you could collect a soil sample.” She knew soil research was important to him as well.

“Of course I want a soil sample,” Andreiya said, like it was the simplest thing in the world. She knew he wanted to learn all he could about dirt! He wanted to create strong, nutritious, sustainable soil that could be used to cultivate a wide variety of healthy, adaptable plants.
“I just don’t like that it’s in a cemetery. That is so distasteful, that they just bury people in the dirt. Ugh.”
His nose wrinkled and he shuddered and shook his head.
Compost or not, it was gross. He didn’t like Earth rituals very much.
But, for the sake of science, he would stomach this strange, gross Earth location.
…Especially because Naeria was so excited. It was hard to even remember why he should be grouchy when he was greeted with such a sight, and when he actually took a moment to appreciate it–
Well, it was breathtaking. But then, mushrooms were so resilient. Of course he should look to them for inspiration. They weren’t quite compatible with his preferred plants but if these could grow down here…
There was most certainly something to learn.
“...How did you find this place? …I wonder if there are others like it.”
Maybe with less death right under their feet, but still. They were hoping for some sort of solution to their plight, they couldn’t afford to be picky.

Naeria considered the worn stones around them. "Do not look up embalming," she told her friend. "It is too late for me. I found a documentary and could not stop watching, and what the humans do to their dead is-" her words trailed off as she grew uncomfortable with the thought, and instead, she simply shuddered. Burial was strange to her, but she could accept that as a cultural difference. At least, she would have accepted it if they simply buried the dead and allowed them to compost and continue in the life cycle. Instead, they filled remains with dangerous chemicals simply to preserve their features for a few days, and then used Earth's limited and precious resources to make expensive vaults and caskets that had no purpose that she could understand. She heard that the chemicals could leak into the surrounding areas at times. Was that what had happened here? She had not seen similar mushrooms in any other areas, but she would look at Andreiya's results for evidence of that. Then she was back to thinking about science, and she was no longer shuddering. "I like to look at construction and demolition zones," she told him. "Anything that can survive there is sturdy enough that it might be useful. It is not usually this interesting, though."

Andreiya’s nose wrinkled again and he found himself holding his breath as she continued to speak. He expected some horrifying conclusion, but he found himself pleasantly relieved to hear her taper off.
“That’s true,” he acknowledged, overcoming his reluctance to be in this very eerie underground tomb so he could better examine the mushrooms she was so invested in. He was excited, of course to find something new to work with. These were clearly not ideal living circumstances, but there were even trees down here. Looking a little worse for wear, but they’d managed to grow tall even with no sunlight to guide them. He could barely make out the bent shape of one of the trees as it grew along the ceiling.
This was a good sign. “These plants must be strong. I am looking forward to testing the soil components. What are you going to do with the mushrooms?”
He crouched in front of them to observe their strange shape and luster. He was wearing gloves so he supposed he had little to worry about; he stretched out a single finger and curiously pushed it into the cap of a large, round mushroom.

Naeria followed Andreyia's gaze to where a twisted tree curled around the top of the cave's ceiling. She had been so focused on the mushrooms that she had not even noticed it at first, but now she did. "You can look at the plants," she told him. "I will even come with you, once I finish gathering my own samples." It might have been even more important for their research than what she was looking at. Mushrooms could generally survive in places like this, but other than a few species like the ghost plant, which was small and strange, plants needed lots of light and energy to thrive. Plants that did not have those needs could prove useful for Velencya. She was sure the mushrooms would have some use too, though, and so she pulled a few plastic containers out of subspace and began to gently pull some of the mushrooms from the soil and put them in the containers. "I am going to cultivate them, if I can. Analyze their growth structure, molecular makeup, nutritional value, and see what I can find that might be useful."

Andreiya hummed, because–for as interested as he was in the plants, he also did not want to stray too far from Naeria. Just in case. This place was creepy and filled his stomach with a sense of dread. He felt bloated with it, like it was already stirring in his gut and trying to claw its way out, up his throat. He could have gagged on it.
As she began to work, he moved near to her and began to scan some of the soil with his ComTech while simultaneously scooping up some samples to take back with him. His eyes drifted again to the shadows.
“I hope you can. I think I dread the idea of them having any nutritional value. Earth has given me such an imagination, I don’t know if that’s for better or worse. I try to be practical, but.” He huffed. The ComTech was taking forever to load and he wanted answers now.
He started collecting small samples of plants in the interim, but something felt off about it. He wanted to get the roots of some of these grasses, and he’d settle for some leaves if he could, but…
The glow of the mushroom was alluring, and he glanced back at Naeria as she made her selections. “It’s going to start getting colder again here on Earth. Time moves so strangely here. I like the seasons. I think I have started to look forward to them. I wish we had them at home.”

"If they do have nutritional value, we will find a way to make them palatable," she promised. She wasn't as concerned about things like flavor like some of the others were. She had been fine with the simple food she had grown up with, but she agreed that just because something was nutritious didn't mean that it should taste bad, or be a struggle to eat. She knew that there were those in the house that would help her cook up anything that she could forage, or grow. She didn't notice Andreiya's worries, being too caught up in her own thoughts. She did not like the loss that death brought, but she did not mind the physical remnants. She found decomposition fascinating. She was only thinking about mushrooms until Andreiya brought up the seasons. "I like them, too," she murmured. She stopped looking so closely at the mushrooms, and looked off into the distance instead. A moment later, she asked, "Do you think they had seasons on Velenia?" If she'd studied it, it slipped her thoughts now.

“Yes,” Andreiya blurted with sudden enthusiasm. “Commodore Lyndin spoke of them to me.” He had to reel himself in, but of the small conversations he’d had with the Commodore since arriving on Earth, he couldn’t help but feel a bit flustered and proud at the idea of having social conversations with the Commodore.
“He humors my questions, but I try not to ask too many. I often send him updates to my research for review. I know I cannot replicate the natural life on Velenia,” probably, “I have proposed integrating some hardy flora to make the world more livable. But in the process I have asked of soil, and what plants and trees and flowers were like. He has many stories, you should ask him when you have free time. I think he likes talking about Velenia, he gets a little smile on his face.”
It was sad, but Andreiya could see the love there. Velencians were taught to suppress emotions, so he supposed the Commodore did the same more than any of them.
He pressed his lips together and took another soil sample. Softer, and maybe with a bit of apprehension, he added, “I am worried I will disappoint him. I am afraid that I do not have the heart or courage to help find His Highness and his starseed. I don’t want to be a failure. I am trying to make myself useful in other ways.”

As Andreyia spoke, Naeria tuned away from the mushrooms for a longer second. She needed mycelium samples, still, and some photographs, but that could wait. Instead, she rocked back on her heels and watched her friend with those golden, curious eyes. Her words had come quickly, talking about her research, but now they slowed again. It took several long moments for her to speak. "All of my research is focused on extending the life of Velencya," she said. "Fungus is an efficient source of food, a natural recycler, and it can serve other purposes, too. If energy is a limiting factor, that should help." She reached down, and found cool soil to dig her fingernails into as a comfort. "But it is not a permanent solution. I do not know what is." She thought of her life on Velencya, cramped and artificial, before she had seen the sun. She thought of Caedus's smile. "I will not harm the king," she said. "I am not sure that is a solution, either." She would have to be certain of something having great benefits before she would even think about taking a life.

Andreiya hummed when she said she would not harm the king. Of course, he’d expected as much from her. Her heart was too big. He just didn’t think of Caedus as king. Maybe, by bloodline alone, but it wasn’t as if he’d ever really even been around. Not in his lifetime, not in his parents’. He accepted that Caedus had an honorary title because the Commodore had humored it–or, maybe that was just an old habit of his.
Caedus had been rather kingly, many years ago. The Commodore had always spoken highly of him.
It was a complicated situation. He understood some of it, but he knew there was far more to it than what he’d been told.
Truthfully, he didn’t mind whatever secrets Lyndin was keeping from them. It was hard enough to process what information he had. He could only imagine the burden the Commodore was carrying alone.
Andreiya poked at the dirt a bit and resisted the urge to just sit cross-legged on the ground and admire the strange cavern.
“We can only do our best. For what it’s worth, I think you are doing a very good job. Maybe if we can buy enough time, someone else can figure out the permanent solution.” He didn’t think so highly of himself that he thought it should be him saving Velencya, but his goal was to do the best he could do. Even if it was just something for someone else to build off of.
“Earth has no Senshi, not that I know of. Or that anyone I have spoken to knows of. But it is so full of life. I wish we could find whatever made it so special and take it back to Velenia. Then, maybe the Commodore and Caedus could be friends again. I want that for them."
He wanted to be able to spend time with his friends, too. Without worrying about disappointing Velencya, or losing their home.

If everyone could be friends, and they could find a way to save their world? That would be the ideal. They might have to consider other options, like evacuation, but Naeria was not going to bring that up right now. She had already done one difficult thing, speaking of Caedus. "There is something special here," she agreed. "Not just the mushrooms." That was said with a smile, the attempt at a joke. She had her specialty, but she was not blind to other areas. What had kept Earth alive, without a senshi, when so many other worlds had fallen? "It makes me happy to know that someone else is looking for it. Hopeful, too." And if either of them could buy time, then maybe some of the others could help them look for it too, without anxiety and desperation driving them to extremes. "I think I have enough samples," she added, picking one more mushroom just as an extra.

Andreiya breathed a little sigh of relief and nodded. He was always worried about being judged but Naeria had always been so understanding. So supportive. He could share secrets with her, and she’d shared hers with him. There was a camaraderie there that was deeper than what he had with some of the other Vanguardians.
“I probably have enough, too,” he said. He forced himself to stand up so he didn’t try to keep collecting more. Something rustled in the shadows and the hair on the back of his neck stood up straight. He had goosebumps along his arms despite the fact that his outfit should have kept him plenty warm..
“...Ugh. I suppose not everything is so fantastical about Earth, though. I never felt so uncomfortable on Velenya. This place is so eerie. I will be very ready to go back to the house and study these results. I hope you find something good in your mushrooms.”
…And he hoped whatever shadows clung to this place didn’t follow them back.
