After the Aishan trees had suddenly and furiously bloomed, pollen had started to fall from the sky in never before seen quantities. The sun seemed choked by its presence and the breeze currents seemed to carry it across all of Tendaji.

Curiously enough, the impact of the pollen could be seen in earthlings...

Random earthlings across Tendaji saw cracks and fissures in their skin, shedding as if they had a sunburn. New skin tones shone through from underneath. Almost as if by magic new eye colors and crystal colors emerged with a night's rest. Earthlings changed overnight without regard to their family lineage. Brothers and sisters now sported new colors; mothers and daughters that once looked like spitting images captured the eyes of many with their sudden differences.

What could be made of these changes? The world was in upset, some overjoyed and thrilled at the new colors, others in despair as their self views shifted beneath their feet.

[ Earthlings (and those with earthling blood) have started to suddenly change colors! What does your character make of the changes? Did they change too, or do they just witness the new looks of someone close? Are they fascinated in this sudden new change, or are they in the throws of woe? Let us know how your character handles the change in the world! ]

Uro walked quickly through the town toward the clinic. She hated the place, it always smelled of death, but what choice did she have? She had no idea what was going on, and it was terrifying! What had happened to her crystals, now deep purple instead of fresh pink? And her skin, now deep and warm compared to the cooler tone she'd always known? How was this possible?! She scratched at her crystals as tears of dismay welled up in her eyes. "Grandmother. Why?" Uro wasn't normally one to have such an overt reaction to surprises, but this.. this was on a completely different level. She winced as one nail caught her skin enough to draw blood, and then watched with confusion as the fluid slowly oozed along her arm. "Don't leave me.."

[No changes for Eurig!]

Overnight the sleepy little village had awoken to a deep unrest. The day before a thick, odd pollen had settled over the land and while some had looked into it most assumed it would quickly fade. It didn't seem toxic, at least at the moment, and while there were a string of itchy skins, watery eyes and mild coughs the ailments weren't nearly so severe that a warning had gone out.

So, when Eurig awoke to prepare for the days work to a cacophony of sounds outside it was certainly odd. Especially when he saw folk that he'd worked with just the night before utterly changed. Darker hues had replaced pale skin, pink crystals cropped up where violet tones had resided and even eye colors had changed all at once! Eurig gave himself a cautious once over, just to make sure, but when he found nothing out of the ordinary he breathed a sigh of relief. At least it didn't get me.

Still...Shaking his head, the leafling slipped out of bed, got dressed and headed outside. Maybe he could open early today, just to provide some kind of distraction to the effected and - "Hey hey, don't do that." He'd only just caught the sight of a woman picking at her skin enough to draw blood and moved closer to pull her hand back. He hadn't meant it to be rough, but he also didn't want her to make it worse. Especially when he saw her...crying....Wait, did he know her?

Too wrapped up in her own concerns, Uro barely noticed anyone around her. She didn't hear anything about others changing. She just wanted to know why she was different than when she had gone to bed! Why she looked so different from her old life now.

She gasped sharply when she was grabbed, both from the unexpected touch and the mental jerk back to noticing her surroundings. She wasn't at the clinic yet. When had she stopped walking? She sniffled and raised her eyes to see who had caught her. It had been a long time, but... "Eurig?" Though relieved to see him, it did little to quell the distraught feelings within. She turned her arm to point at her skin and crystals pleadingly, fingers twitching with the urge to scratch some more. "My crystals were like my grandmother's, and now.." she gestured to the purple gems in utter disgust and despair, "now they're this! She couldn't do this to me, right? She wouldn't!"

OOO BOY I LOST THIS ONE

"Uro?" He hadn't noticed before, but now that he was face to face with her it couldn't be anyone else. She'd obviously changed along side everyone else, and most heart breaking of all was how upset she was over it.

"She never would have done this to you," Eurig murmured, doing his best to keep his voice level and low. He assumed the 'she' in question was Uro's grandmother, but he didn't dare ask. Not now, anyway. "Just...do me a favor and take a deep breath? Before you hurt yourself again?"
PostPosted: Thu Dec 07, 2023 6:54 pm

Just having a calm voice to ground herself to was enough to help her think clearer. Uro winced at the blood on her arm and shook her head. "Yes, you.. you're right. She never would. She loved that I.." She inhaled a shuddering breath as requested, but the exhale came out with a whimper of her remaining concerns. Surely grandmother would see it was simply the shock that had overwhelmed her into thinking something so absurd as a finger of maliciousness coming from the precious elder!

That didn't change the fact that she still looked different from yesterday, and that remained incredibly distressing. She pressed her hand over the small wound and pressed firmly. "Something changed me," she murmured finally. "I just woke up and my skin was falling off and my crystals had shifted to this.. this purple." She blinked her eyes mostly clear of her tears before she raised her face again. "I don't understand."

Eurig breathed in deep through his nose and let out a slow, contained exhale. When it seemed like something was taking over the woman he did so again and again, wordlessly working her through the motions until she had handle on things.

"I think it might have been the pollen. You're the not the only one who was affected," He made a vague motion back toward the village with a frown. "It's been a chaotic morning." Even now he could hear murmurs of voices, both raised and concerned, although the words were harder to make out. "Does your skin itch at all? Is it painful to touch?"

"I'm not?" Uro wiped at her eyes and finally looked around to take in her surroundings. Finally, she noticed others scurrying about trying to deal with similar trouble. One woman was shaking out her hair with delight at the new color and Uro couldn't help a pang of jealousy. Why couldn't her hair have been the thing to change?

She looked down at herself again and shook her head. "It itches a little, but not like it did earlier. ..and the only pain in in my heart." Uro felt the tears well up again. "I inherited those colors from my grandmother. I looked like her. And now what? Who am I?" She gasped sharply, eyes widening with despair. "What if.. Is it my mother? Do I look like my mother now?!"

"Far from it," Eurig softly assured her. It wouldn't help take away her personal stress, but hopefully it might help Uro ease into her new look? There wasn't anything that could be done about it - so far as he knew, in the moment - and panicking over it wouldn't be good on her overall health.

But there she went again, working herself up. "It wasn't your mother." Eurig gave her hand another squeeze. "I'm sorry that you lost something that connected you to your grandmother, but I'm sure she wouldn't want you to worry yourself sick over it. She left more with you than the color of your skin and your crystals."

Eurig's sympathies grounded Uro a little further. It was enough that she let out a final shaky sigh and shook her head with a wane smile. "I know that's what I've been trying to tell myself, but why does it make more sense when you say it? ..I suppose this mean the doctors won't be able to help." Considering how no one was exclaiming about any cures, she was probably stuck like this now. She looked down at her shoulder again and sighed. "My mother might not have these colors at all anyway. I can ask my father later."

Still, she gratefully kept a hold of his hand to give it a squeeze in return. "Thank you. I'm sorry for-" What even had that been? Her cheeks heated with embarrassment as her free hand wiped a few tears away from her cheeks, "-for whatever spectacle that was I made of myself." She looked Eurig over a little. He had grown quite handsomely since the last time she had seen him, but she didn't think he had any changes like she'd had. It had been a while though. "Are you alright?"

"Probably not," He awkwardly supplied. It wasn't likely that anyone with a magical talent or otherwise could change what had already been changed. She could still try, of course, but he worried the stress of it might do more harm than good. Best to just keep my mouth shut then.

"I'm faring a bit better than everyone else it seems." The thought of letting go of their contact never once crossed his mind. If it was helping to stabilize her then what was the harm? "I'm not sure why I was spared, but maybe it has something to do with the cabbage I ate last night." No one else had touched it; they all complained of the smell, but Eurig had a strong stomach and a hearty appetite. What if that was the trick?

Maybe later when she was less likely to panic he would tell her that the changes really did suit her. Telling her now...would likely undo all of his work, so definitely, definitely later.

So Eurig had somehow avoided the mysterious changes. Well, at least he seemed alright with that. Now that she was calmer, she could someone expressing actual jealousy over their friend's new eye color. It amazed her that anyone could be jealous of a random change...

She blinked back to the present and cocked her head. "Well, it is true that I didn't have cabbage yesterday." Her free hand rose to tap against her lip gently. "Cabbage is quite healthful. It just might have given you the strength to fend off any changes." Her head cocked to the other side. There was another option! "If it was a trickster sort of spirit to cause the pollen, perhaps it simply does not like cabbage and avoided you for that reason."

"Yeah, you know, maybe." A trickster spirit? Eurig gave an awkward smile and nodded. That...didn't really seem all that likely to him, but if it gave her peace then what was the harm? Everyone else in his family would have snipped her bubble then and there, but if pollen could change people then maybe she was right?

"So...now that you're digging at your skin, would you want to have breakfast with me? I've been working at the tavern and I usually cook around this time every morning." While he doubted there would be many patrons, Eurig mostly wanted the meal for himself. It was easier to think about supernatural beings and odd events when his stomach was full.

Uro let out another long breath and nodded. There were simply too many options when something so strange and unheard of occurred. Hopefully, someone would be able to explain what had happened given some time. Someone had to know...

The reminder that she'd managed to claw into her own skin sent a bit of heat to her cheeks. She had never felt such panic before. It had completely overtaken her senses. If it hadn't been for Eurig, who knows how far she would have gone? She sighed softly and squeezed his hand with a growing smile. "Thank you for your kindness. I'm so grateful to have met you those years ago." The invitation made her posture perk up even further. "I would be glad to join you. When did you begin working there?"

Fin~

"Not that long ago. A family friend needed to take some down time and I'm here to help out at his tavern." As he explained his situation, Eurig started to gently lead Uro back toward the village. There were a few more panicked faces in the crowd, some that were even crying and trying to hide it from their consoling families, but on the whole it seemed that the initial panic was starting to calm.

At least, for those who were awake. This early there were likely so many more still tucked into their beds and Eurig knew it would be a wild few days. Still, at least he was able to help a friend and now they had a little time to catch up.
