The Leaves (7) - With the changing seasons, there are piles of leaves all around Destiny City. It’s a difficult job to try and keep up with them all, and sometimes the allure of these leaf piles is impossible to ignore. Maybe they just need a good kick? Or, who doesn’t want to relive the childish joys of their youth? And no one’s around to see, right? So why not jump into a pile of leaves? Oh–because, when you do, you jump through one pile and come out of another somewhere else across the city. The leaves all seem ordinary, but there’s a few odd seconds between when you jump into the leaves and when you jump out; it feels like falling, tumbling, somersaulting through the air. It’s not scary, just odd. You see walls of leaves–brown and orange and yellow and red–and they crunch magnificently. Overall, it doesn’t seem menacing, just a bit of trickster fun. If you try to step into, or jump in a pile of leaves again, you might wind up somewhere else entirely–or right back where you started.

Normally when Tilly was walking home, she didn’t ever really pay attention to those around her. She moved quickly and made sure to get back before really having to talk to anyone, but ever since she had been bitten by that awful bat monster…thing…

She had just been cold. And annoyed. Everything seemed to be annoying her and…it just.

It wasn’t like her. Tilly didn’t get annoyed over nothing…not normally but…

Something was wrong…and she was walking home slower due to it.

There was another girl nearby, dressed in the identical Meadowview uniform, and honestly, she looked like a freshman so Tilly didn’t bother saying anything and instead pulled down the hood of her jacket, shielding her eyes from the overbright sunlight. That was bothering her too and…it was all just. Strange. And uncomfortable. If only she had been looking where she was going instead of daydreaming about what might be wrong with her…if that had been the case her foot might not have gotten caught in the piece of sidewalk that was jutting upwards…and she wouldn’t be stumbling towards the other girl.

“Son of a b***h!” The words exploded from Tilly without her consent and she slammed into the other girl, pushing her off of the sidewalk and landing the both of them in a big pile of leaves.

…However…the ground wasn’t…hard.

It felt as though they were falling a terribly long way, and Tilly groped for the girl’s arm, holding it in a vice like grip, gasping when suddenly they were on solid ground once again…

Nowhere near where they had been.

A lot of things, by which she basically meant magic, that had been purely hypothetical to Lena up until a few weeks ago had suddenly gotten a lot more real. Which, anyone who knew anything about Lena knew that magic and fantasy and fairytales were her whole thing, her whole life, and now she'd been given even more reasons to think about that stuff?

Her homework had been scribbles since that night with the jellyfish and the magic cousins. When she'd been at school, and even sometimes at home, she'd been staring out the window, looking for angels or wind fairies or monsters in the clouds. She hadn't actually seen anything else magical yet, but that wasn't doing anything at all to stop her.

The fall weather and leaves gave her imagination plenty to work with, too.

She was thinking about a kingdom of mice that would live in the roots of one of the oak trees, using orange and crimson leaves as the tapestries on their walls, and the heraldry on their shields. They'd wear rings they stole from humans as crowns, and use needles as swords, and of course they'd be very brave, like Reepicheep from Narnia-

Halfway through that thought, someone was screaming and running into her, and she was tumbling into the pile of leaves next to the mouse kingdom, which it turned out wasn't actually a kingdom at all.

It was something else.

Lena gasped with joy as she looked around, picking bits of foilage from her hair and getting her bearings, because she was not in the same place anymore. She was not in the same place at all.

"It's a portal!" she said to the other girl, who even now she had only barely noticed. "Did you see that?"

“I…yeah I mean we both…both fell through it…” Tilly felt stunned and winded and just utterly…confused.

This…wasn’t normal, this wasn’t even in the realm of normal, and…sure her expectations were low considering the fact that she was Mechelen but…

Leaf portals? That was a whole level of weird that she just. Wasn’t ready for. Or used to.

“I’m so sorry that I knocked into you, by the way…I wasn’t paying attention to where I was walking and a piece of sidewalk decided to have revenge on me…ah…”

Tilly glanced around, trying to find some landmark that would help them figure out where they were but…maybe it was still the shock wearing off that made nothing seem familiar.

“A portal to where though? Maybe I’m just dumb but I feel like I’ve never been here before. And I’m sure I’m just dumb…we just literally fell through a leaf portal so…forgive the stupidity…”

“I wish it was a portal to another world,” said Lena, stars in her eyes as she stared at the trees around her. She knew that, clearly, this world had magic in it, and that it was maybe possible to go to space, but she still thought it would be fun to go to Narnia, or the Faewild, or somewhere else with things that were really different and magical.

“Imagine if we’d found fairies, or brave talking mice?”

They hadn’t, though, so after a second she pulled her phone out of her backpack and switched it to the maps app.

“And it’s okay. I’m not hurt. Looks like we’re just-” She scrolled a little bit, “Kind of on the west side of town? There’s a bus stop a block away, I’ll probably head over there because walking back would take forever.”

She turned her phone so the other girl could see.

“Oh sweet!” Duh. A phone. Her phone. If Tilly would have taken three seconds to think maybe she wouldn't have sounded so stupid but…she didn't.

“I’m Tilly, again, sorry for being so stupid this. Is definitely different than what I’m used to but…guess I shouldn’t be too surprised.” She held a hand out to other girl, giving a small laugh at the idea of going to another world…if only she knew about all of the magical things in this city…this was nothing compared to the other things out there.

“Fairies would have been neat…not so sure about the mice…but if they cooked I wouldn’t really mind…like the one in that Disney movie? It always makes me so stupidly hungry. And yeah! The bus sounds good to me, lead the way!”

"Cooking mice would be great," Lena agreed, knowing exactly what movie it was that Tilly was talking about, "Or, cleaning mice? I don't mind making food, but my room needs help.

She wanted so badly to have a room that looked like what she saw on TikTok and Pinterest, and like what the teenagers had in shows she watched, but it would take a whole army of mouse-soldiers or mouse-maids to get it anywhere near that point.

Unfortunately the leaf pile did not seem to be providing her with any of that, but it had provided her with a person who seemed nice.

"Let's go," she agreed.

“That sounds great, honestly. Cleaning is one of my biggest icks. But…I do it when I have to…must be nice to be like a Disney Princess and have all that magical stuff.”

She followed the other girl and after a minute seemed to finally snap herself out of whatever other world her mind had gone to. “I hope we can talk again. It’s not every way people fall through leaf portals, and I’m always up for new friends. We both go to Meadowview so…shouldn’t be too hard!”

Hopefully…maybe.

“We should hang out sometime.”

Of course she couldn't tell Tilly that she was a knight, but she thought about it all the same, since the outfit made her look like a Disney princess, and she had the transformation with magic like in that same story.

Why didn't she get the mice?

Had she just not found it yet? Were the mice that cleaned her room hiding in space?

Now she was going to be thinking about space mice for the rest of the night.

"We should hang out," she agreed, as they finished making their way over to the bus stop.
