He awoke at dawn after getting a face full of tree pollen the day before. He had slept well with no issues and went about his morning, right up until he looked in the mirror. He looked posessed. "MOM!" He shrieked but it turned out no one was home at the moment. Gods, what had happened to his eyes, it wasn't redness per say but his Iris had changed color even. He looked deeply into one in the mirror, it was shades lighter than his old color, oh man that was creepy.
"Darn eye changing tree pollen, what is this rampant chaos?" That was affecting earthlings apparently, he had just thought it was tree celebration dust not change your eye color kind of hijinks.
He took a big breath and roared. It wasn't effectual but it did make him feel marginally better, and probably woke up the rest of the neighborhood if anyone was having a bit of a ly in. UGH. Touched by magic without permission, he was striking now, he had been servicably good looking before but well he would turn heads now with these bright red eyes. There went his slinking in the shadows.
Though perhaps inside him somewhere he thought his eyes might represent the coals he had decided to pursue as a career. This pleased him. But he had not had looking prettier in the bargain. He would have to beat people off with a stick when he was older, girls were a pain.
He shook his head. Checking outside he saw quite a few others that didn't look as normal, there were new bright colors everywhere and some that had drabbed or darkened up the thing was that they had not looked like that not long ago. What a weird world they were now living in that it was just a thing to wake up not yourself anymore. Bah. Humbug.
He stormed back inside and tried to read, except he couldn't concentrate, not even in his reading pose with one leg on top of the other. Ugh even reading was ruined for him. He knew what he was going to do, he would get Dad to drop him off in Matori, he would go see Kynin. That always made him feel better. He disliked being in Oba anyway, he preferred Matori and indeed Kynin's sister's place in Zena was a good hang, though even Ny was in Matori at the moment so it was no fun going up north.
He put on his boots and went to bug his Dad wherever his Dad had gotten too. Oh well. He would ask when his Dad came back.
For now he packed and prepared. He was deeply shaken by this blatant change and he needed the comfort of his best friend, pronto. As he was still young everything was very dramatic, in his defense though there were adults freaking out just as much some with bigger changes than his. He felt for them and felt mostly sorry for himself. He hoped his brother had escaped unscathed. He sighed. What about his parents? Mom? Dad? Would they change color? What was even happening?
The trees the news said were the cause. Yup he knew it the pollen, the darn pollen. He shook his fist in the air but that also did little more than make him feel a little better. With nothing better to do he sort of curled up in a corner of the empty house and cried because it was something he hadn't asked for and hadn't expected to just change. No one knew if it was permanant or not yet but he thought that usually magic didn't change stuff like this without some sort of finality unless it was a simple curse that could be broken. This all sounded out of this world and he didn't have a clue what to do with himself. He supposed continue to learn the art of smithing and go from there. Hopefully Kynin would not mind the eye color change, he looked like a vampire from a story honestly. He shook his head, he didn't want to be associated with night bats. Ugh. He bet some smart alec kid would bring it up and he would have to just deal with the label after that. His life was just so hard, why couldn't stuff just come together for him, he even ate his vegetables and it was not getting much better. Nothing he could do, but that was just such an unsatisfactory answer.
